The sages said: O Sūta, it behoves you to recount now how the chieftancy of the Gaṇas was acquired from Maheśvara by Upamanyu. How was the milk-ocean also obtained by him?

Sūta said: When the three-eyed lord went away after creating[1] Kālī thus, Upamanyu worshipped him by performing penance and acquired the benefit of worship.

Sūta said: O excellent brahmins, there was a sage known as Upamanyu. He was as refulgent as Kārttikeya.[2] Once while playing about in the hermitage of his materrial uncle, he got only a small quantity of milk while his uncle’s son drank a good quantity of excellent milk malicioulsy. On seeing him drinking milk as much as he pleased, Upamanyu spoke to his mother. “O mother, O highly blessed mother, O ascetic woman, give me cow’s sweet milk, which should be hot and not too little in quantity. I am bowing down to you.”

uñchavṛttyārjitān bījān svayaṃ piṣṭvā ca sā tadā| bījapiṣṭaṃ tadāloḍya toyena kalabhāṣiṇī||
Sūta said: That sweet-voiced lady ground some seeds she had gathered by gleaning one by one. She then stirred the grounded paste with water and then lovingly called her son gently and said, “Come, come on, my dear son”. The distressed lady embraced the boy tenderly and gave him the artificial milk she had prepared.

Sūta said: O excellent brahmins, on drinking the artificial milk given by his mother the boy became dejected and said, “O mother, this is not milk”.

Sūta said: On observing this she became unhappy. With her hands she wiped her son’s lotus-like wide eyes. She kissed him on the head and said:—

तटिनी रत्नपूर्णास्ते स्वर्गपातालगोचराः। भाग्यहीना न पश्यन्ति भक्तिहीनाश च ये शिवे।।
taṭinī ratnapūrṇāste svargapātālagocarāḥ| bhāgyahīnā na paśyanti bhaktihīnāś ca ye śive||
Sūta said: There is a river full of jewels within the range of heaven and nether worlds. Those who are unfortunate, being devoid of devotion to Śiva do not perceive it.

राज्यं स्वर्गं च मोक्षं च भोजनं क्षीरसंभवम। न लभन्ते प्रियाण्येषां नो तुष्यति सदा भवः।।
rājyaṃ svargaṃ ca mokṣaṃ ca bhojanaṃ kṣīrasaṃbhavam| na labhante priyāṇyeṣāṃ no tuṣyati sadā bhavaḥ||
Sūta said: Such persons do not obtain kingdom, heaven, salvation and the diet of milk. They do not achieve pleasing things unless Bhava is satisfied with them.

भवप्रसादजं सर्वं नान्यदेवप्रसादजम। अन्यदेवेषु निरता दुःखार्ता विभ्रमन्ति च।।
bhavaprasādajaṃ sarvaṃ nānyadevaprasādajam| anyadeveṣu niratā duḥkhārtā vibhramanti ca||
Sūta said: Everything results from the grace of Bhava and not from the grace of other deities. Those who are devoted to other deities are miserable, confused and bewildered.

Sūta said: Whence can we get milk? We have not worshipped Mahādeva. O son, only that can be achieved, which has been gifted after exalting Śiva and not by exalting Viṣṇu or any other lord.

tamāha mātā suśubhaṃ kurviti sutarāṃ sutam| anujñātastayā tatra tapastepe sudustaram||
Sūta said: The mother then said to him, “Perform the splendid penance perfectly”. On being permitted by her he performed a very severe penance.

हिमवत्पर्वतं प्राप्य वायुभक्षः समाहितः। तपसा तस्य विप्रस्य विधूपितमभूज्जगत।।
himavatparvataṃ prāpya vāyubhakṣaḥ samāhitaḥ| tapasā tasya viprasya vidhūpitamabhūjjagat||
Sūta said: He went to the mountain Himavān. With great attention and concentration he took in only wind as food. Due to his penance the universe became agitated.

Sūta said: The excellent Devas bowed down to Viṣṇu and mentioned everything to him. On hearing their words lord Viṣṇu thought, “What is this?” On deep consideration he rerealized the cause. With a desire to see Maheśvara, he hastened to the Mandara mountain. On seeing the lord, he joined his palms in reverence, bowed down to him and said:—“O lord, a certain brahmin boy known as Upamanyu has, for the sake of milk, burnt everything by means of his penance. Curb him.” On hearing their petition, the Pināka-bearing lord resolved to go there in the guise of Indra.

Sūta said: The excellent Devas bowed down to Viṣṇu and mentioned everything to him. On hearing their words lord Viṣṇu thought, “What is this?” On deep consideration he rerealized the cause. With a desire to see Maheśvara, he hastened to the Mandara mountain. kṣīrārthamadahatsarvaṃ tapasā taṃ nivāraya| etasminnantare devaḥ pinākī parameśvaraḥ| śakrarūpaṃ samāsthāya gantuṃ cakre matiṃ tadā||
Sūta said: The excellent Devas bowed down to Viṣṇu and mentioned everything to him. On hearing their words lord Viṣṇu thought, “What is this?” On deep consideration he rerealized the cause. With a desire to see Maheśvara, he hastened to the Mandara mountain. On seeing the lord, he joined his palms in reverence, bowed down to him and said:—“O lord, a certain brahmin boy known as Upamanyu has, for the sake of milk, burnt everything by means of his penance. Curb him.” On hearing their petition, the Pināka-bearing lord resolved to go there in the guise of Indra.

अथ जगाम मुनेस्तु तपोवनं गजवरेण सितेन सदाशिवः। सह सुरासुरसिद्धमहोरगैर अमरराजतनुं स्वयमास्थितः।।
atha jagāma munestu tapovanaṃ gajavareṇa sitena sadāśivaḥ| saha surāsurasiddhamahoragair amararājatanuṃ svayamāsthitaḥ||
Sūta said: Having assumed the form of Indra the king of immortal beings, he went to the penance grove of the sage riding on the white elephant. He was accompanied by Devas, Asuras, Siddhas and Nāgas.

सहैव चारुह्य तदा द्विपं तं प्रगृह्य वालव्यजनं विवस्वान। * वामेन शच्या सहितं सुरेन्द्रं करेण चान्येन सितातपत्रम।। *
sahaiva cāruhya tadā dvipaṃ taṃ pragṛhya vālavyajanaṃ vivasvān| * vāmena śacyā sahitaṃ surendraṃ kareṇa cānyena sitātapatram|| *
Sūta said: Indra was accompanied by Śaci and he mounted the elephant. The sun held the fan in his left hand and the white umbrella in the other.

रराज भगवान सोमः शक्ररूपी सदाशिवः। सितातपत्रेण यथा चन्द्रबिंबेन मन्दरः।।
rarāja bhagavān somaḥ śakrarūpī sadāśivaḥ| sitātapatreṇa yathā candrabiṃbena mandaraḥ||
Sūta said: With his white umbrella, lord Sadāśiva who had assumed the form of Indra and was accompanied by Umā [in the form of Śacī] shone like the Mandara mountain with the disc of the moon above it.

आस्थायैवं हि शक्रस्य स्वरूपं परमेश्वरः। जगामानुग्रहं कर्तुम उपमन्योस तदाश्रमम।।
āsthāyaivaṃ hi śakrasya svarūpaṃ parameśvaraḥ| jagāmānugrahaṃ kartum upamanyos tadāśramam||
Sūta said: Having assumed the form of Indra like this, the lord went to the hermitage of Upamanyu in order to bless him.

तं दृष्ट्वा परमेशानं शक्ररूपधरं शिवम। प्रणम्य शिरसा प्राह मुनिर्मुनिवराः स्वयम।।
taṃ dṛṣṭvā parameśānaṃ śakrarūpadharaṃ śivam| praṇamya śirasā prāha munirmunivarāḥ svayam||
Sūta said: “Today my hermitage[3] has been sanctified since Indra, the lord of Devas and of the universe, has come here along with the sun god”. O excellent sages, so said Upamanyu, on seeing lord Śiva in the guise of Indra. He bowed down his head.

पावितश्चाश्रमश्चायं मम देवेश्वरः स्वयम। प्राप्तः शक्रो जगन्नाथो भगवान्भानुना प्रभुः।।

evamuktvā sthitaṃ vīkṣya kṛtāñjalipuṭaṃ dvijam| prāha gaṃbhīrayā vācā śakrarūpadharo haraḥ||
Sūta said: On seeing that the brahmin boy after saying thus, stood aside with palms joined in reverence, lord Śiva in the guise of Indra said in a majestic tone.

तुष्टो ऽस्मि ते वरं ब्रूहि तपसानेन सुव्रत। ददामि चेप्सितान सर्वान धौम्याग्रज महामते।।
tuṣṭo 'smi te varaṃ brūhi tapasānena suvrata| dadāmi cepsitān sarvān dhaumyāgraja mahāmate||
Sūta said: “O highly intelligent sage of good holy rites, O elder brother of Dhaumya, I am delighted with you for your penance. Tell me the boon you wish to choose. I shall give you all desired things.”

एवमुक्तस्तदा तेन शक्रेण मुनिसत्तमः। वरयामि शिवे भक्तिम इत्युवाच कृताञ्जलिः।।
evamuktastadā tena śakreṇa munisattamaḥ| varayāmi śive bhaktim ityuvāca kṛtāñjaliḥ||
