The sages said:: How did the leading Daitya named Andhaka obtain the chieftaincy of the Gaṇas from Maheśvara after being subdued in the Mandara mountain with many charming caves? It behoves you to recount it in the manner it happened and in the way you have heard.

बाधितास्ताडिता बद्धाः पातितास्तेन ते सुराः। विविशुर्मन्दरं भीता नारायणपुरोगमाः।।
bādhitāstāḍitā baddhāḥ pātitāstena te surāḥ| viviśurmandaraṃ bhītā nārāyaṇapurogamāḥ||
Sūta said: All Devas, Nārāyaṇa and others were oppressed, beaten, bound and struck down by him. They became frightened and entered Mandara.

एवं संपीड्य वै देवान अन्धको ऽपि महासुरः। यदृच्छया गिरिं प्राप्तो मन्दरं चारुकन्दरम।।
evaṃ saṃpīḍya vai devān andhako 'pi mahāsuraḥ| yadṛcchayā giriṃ prāpto mandaraṃ cārukandaram||
Sūta said: After afflicting Devas thus, Andhaka the great Asura happened to come casually to the mountain. Mandara with charming caves.

ततस्ते समस्ताः सुरेन्द्राः ससाध्याः सुरेशं महेशं पुरेत्याहुरेवम। द्रुतं चाल्पवीर्यप्रभिन्नाङ्गभिन्ना वयं दैत्यराजस्य शस्त्रैर्निकृत्ताः।।
tataste samastāḥ surendrāḥ sasādhyāḥ sureśaṃ maheśaṃ puretyāhurevam| drutaṃ cālpavīryaprabhinnāṅgabhinnā vayaṃ daityarājasya śastrairnikṛttāḥ||
Sūta said: Then all those leading Devas including Sādhyas, approached Maheśa, the lord of all Devas and said thus:—

इतीदमखिलं श्रुत्वा दैत्यागमम अनौपमम। गणेश्वरैश च भगवान अन्धकाभिमुखं ययौ।।
itīdamakhilaṃ śrutvā daityāgamam anaupamam| gaṇeśvaraiś ca bhagavān andhakābhimukhaṃ yayau||
Sūta said: On hearing thus of the arrival of the Daitya through this leading Gaṇas the lord set out against Andhaka. At that place, Indra, the lotus-born Brahmā, Viṣṇu and other leading Devas and the excellent brahmins shouted victories to the lord from all sides. They kept their joined palms on their crown to show their reverence.

तत्रेन्द्रपद्मोद्भवविष्णुमुख्याः सुरेश्वरा विप्रवराश च सर्वे। * जयेति वाचा भगवन्तम ऊचुः किरीटबद्धाञ्जलयः समन्तात।। *
tatrendrapadmodbhavaviṣṇumukhyāḥ sureśvarā vipravarāś ca sarve| * jayeti vācā bhagavantam ūcuḥ kirīṭabaddhāñjalayaḥ samantāt|| *
Sūta said: On hearing thus of the arrival of the Daitya through this leading Gaṇas the lord set out against Andhaka. अथाशेषासुरांस्तस्य कोटिकोटिशतैस ततः। भस्मीकृत्य महादेवो निर्बिभेदान्धकं तदा।।
athāśeṣāsurāṃstasya koṭikoṭiśatais tataḥ| bhasmīkṛtya mahādevo nirbibhedāndhakaṃ tadā||
Sūta said: Reducing the entire host of the Asuras to ashes in crores and hundreds of crores, Mahādeva pierced Andhaka with his trident. On seeing that Andhaka was pierced and that his coat of mail of sin had been burnt, Brahmā, shouted in joy after bowing down to Īśa. On hearing that shout Devas bowed down to the lord and shouted. The sages danced. The Gaṇas rejoiced.

शूलेन शूलिना प्रोतं दग्धकल्मषकञ्चुकम। दृष्ट्वान्धकं ननादेशं प्रणम्य स पितामहः।।
śūlena śūlinā protaṃ dagdhakalmaṣakañcukam| dṛṣṭvāndhakaṃ nanādeśaṃ praṇamya sa pitāmahaḥ||
Sūta said: Reducing the entire host of the Asuras to ashes in crores and hundreds of crores, Mahādeva pierced Andhaka with his trident. On seeing that Andhaka was pierced and that his coat of mail of sin had been burnt, Brahmā, shouted in joy after bowing down to Īśa. On hearing that shout Devas bowed down to the lord and shouted. tannādaśravaṇānnedur devā devaṃ praṇamya tam| nanṛturmunayaḥ sarve mumudurgaṇapuṅgavāḥ||
Sūta said: Reducing the entire host of the Asuras to ashes in crores and hundreds of crores, Mahādeva pierced Andhaka with his trident. ससृजुः पुष्पवर्षाणि देवाः शंभोस्तदोपरि। त्रैलोक्यमखिलं हर्षान ननन्द च ननाद च।।
sasṛjuḥ puṣpavarṣāṇi devāḥ śaṃbhostadopari| trailokyamakhilaṃ harṣān nananda ca nanāda ca||
Sūta said: Then Devas showered plenty of flowers on lord Śiva. The whole of the three worlds rejoiced with delight and shouted.

दग्धो ऽग्निना च शूलेन प्रोतः प्रेत इवान्धकः। सात्त्विकं भावमास्थाय चिन्तयामास चेतसा।।
dagdho 'gninā ca śūlena protaḥ preta ivāndhakaḥ| sāttvikaṃ bhāvamāsthāya cintayāmāsa cetasā||
Sūta said: Transfixed to the trident and burned like a dead body in fire the demon assumed Sāttvika emotions and thought thus in his mind.
The Narrative of the Asura Andhaka - Verse 16

जन्मान्तरे ऽपि देवेन दग्धो यस्माच्छिवेन वै। आराधितो मया शंभुः पुरा साक्षान्महेश्वरः।।
janmāntare 'pi devena dagdho yasmācchivena vai| ārādhito mayā śaṃbhuḥ purā sākṣānmaheśvaraḥ||
Sūta said: “Previously, lord Maheśvara had been propitiated by me in the previous birth since I have been burned now by Śiva. Hence, this has come to pass. Otherwise, this does not fit in. He who remembers Rudra even once in his mind at the time of death attains identity with him. Why not then he who remembers many times. Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Devas including Indra seek refuge in him. One shall certainly seek refuge in him alone.” After thinking thus, Andhaka, delighted in his mind, eulogised Śiva, Īśāna who had suppressed him. It was due to the weightiness of his merit that Andhaka could eulogise thus.

तस्मादेतन्मया लब्धम अन्यथा नोपपद्यते। यः स्मरेन्मनसा रुद्रं प्राणान्ते सकृदेव वा।।
tasmādetanmayā labdham anyathā nopapadyate| yaḥ smarenmanasā rudraṃ prāṇānte sakṛdeva vā||
Sūta said: “Previously, lord Maheśvara had been propitiated by me in the previous birth since I have been burned now by Śiva. Hence, this has come to pass. Otherwise, this does not fit in. He who remembers Rudra even once in his mind at the time of death attains identity with him. Why not then he who remembers many times. Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Devas including Indra seek refuge in him. sa yāti śivasāyujyaṃ kiṃ punarbahuśaḥ smaran| brahmā ca bhagavānviṣṇuḥ sarve devāḥ savāsavāḥ||

सगणं शिवमीशानम अस्तुवत्पुण्यगौरवात। प्रार्थितस्तेन भगवान परमार्तिहरो हरः।।
sagaṇaṃ śivamīśānam astuvatpuṇyagauravāt| prārthitastena bhagavān paramārtiharo haraḥ||
Sūta said: On being prayed to by him, lord Śiva, the lord of Devas, the dispeller of dejection, said to Andhaka the son of Hiraṇyanetra, who was fixed to the tip of the trident. Glancing at the Dānava, the lord spoke with mercy.

हिरण्यनेत्रतनयं शूलाग्रस्थं सुरेश्वरः। प्रोवाच दानवं प्रेक्ष्य घृणया नीललोहितः।।
hiraṇyanetratanayaṃ śūlāgrasthaṃ sureśvaraḥ| provāca dānavaṃ prekṣya ghṛṇayā nīlalohitaḥ||
Sūta said: On being prayed to by him, lord Śiva, the lord of Devas, the dispeller of dejection, said to Andhaka the son of Hiraṇyanetra, who was fixed to the tip of the trident. Glancing at the Dānava, the lord spoke with mercy.

तुष्टो ऽस्मि वत्स भद्रं ते कामं किं करवाणि ते। वरान्वरय दैत्येन्द्र वरदो ऽहं तवान्धक।।
tuṣṭo 'smi vatsa bhadraṃ te kāmaṃ kiṃ karavāṇi te| varānvaraya daityendra varado 'haṃ tavāndhaka||
Sūta said: “O dear one, I am delighted with you. Welfare unto you. What cherished desire of yours shall I fulfil. O leading Daitya, O Andhaka, choose the boons. I am known as the bestower of boons.
The Narrative of the Asura Andhaka - Verse 23

श्रुत्वा वाक्यं तदा शंभोर हिरण्यनयनात्मजः। हर्षगद्गदया वाचा प्रोवाचेदं महेश्वरम।।
śrutvā vākyaṃ tadā śaṃbhor hiraṇyanayanātmajaḥ| harṣagadgadayā vācā provācedaṃ maheśvaram||
Sūta said: On hearing the words of the Jord, the son of Hiraṇyanayana spoke thus to Maheśvara in words choked within, due to excess of delight.

भगवन्देवदेवेश भक्तार्तिहर शङ्कर। त्वयि भक्तिः प्रसीदेश यदि देयो वरश च मे।।
bhagavandevadeveśa bhaktārtihara śaṅkara| tvayi bhaktiḥ prasīdeśa yadi deyo varaś ca me||
Sūta said: O lord. O Śaṅkara, the dispeller of the agony of your devotees, O lord of the chiefs of Devas, I crave for your devotion if a boon is to be given unto me. O Īśa, be pleased.”

श्रुत्वा भवो ऽपि वचनम अन्धकस्य महात्मनः। प्रददौ दुर्लभां श्रद्धां दैत्येन्द्राय महाद्युतिः।।
śrutvā bhavo 'pi vacanam andhakasya mahātmanaḥ| pradadau durlabhāṃ śraddhāṃ daityendrāya mahādyutiḥ||
Sūta said: On hearing the words of Andhaka, the great Ātman, Bhava of great lustre granted him pure devotion which is difficult of access. He conferred on him the chieftancy of the Gaṇas. The leading Devas and others bowed down to him who had been thus established in the position as the chieftain of the Gaṇas.

गाणपत्यं च दैत्याय प्रददौ चावरोप्य तम। प्रणेमुस्तं सुरेन्द्राद्या गाणपत्ये प्रतिष्ठितम।।
gāṇapatyaṃ ca daityāya pradadau cāvaropya tam| praṇemustaṃ surendrādyā gāṇapatye pratiṣṭhitam||
Sūta said: On hearing the words of Andhaka, the great Ātman, Bhava of great lustre granted him pure devotion which is difficult of access. He conferred on him the chieftancy of the Gaṇas. The leading Devas and others bowed down to him who had been thus established in the position as the chieftain of the Gaṇas.
