kathaṃ viṣṇoḥ prasādādvai dhruvo buddhimatāṃ varaḥ| meḍhībhūto grāhāṇāṃ vai vaktumarhasi sāṃpratam||
Sages said: O foremost among the intelligent, it behoves you now to recount how, due to the grace of Viṣṇu, Dhruva became the central pivot of the planets.[1]

etamarthaṃ mayā pṛṣṭo nānāśāstraviśāradaḥ| mārkaṇḍeyaḥ purā prāha mahyaṃ śuśrūṣave dvijāḥ||
Sūta said: O brahmins, when he was asked about this matter by me in former time, Mārkaṇḍeya who is an expert in different sciences said to me as I was desirous of hearing.

सार्वभौमो महातेजाः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः। उत्तानपादो राजा वै पालयामास मेदिनीम।।
sārvabhaumo mahātejāḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṃ varaḥ| uttānapādo rājā vai pālayāmāsa medinīm||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: An emperor of great splendour, the best among all those who wield weapons, king Uttānapāda, ruled over the earth.

tasya bhāryādvayam abhūt sunītiḥ surucis tathā| agrajāyāmabhūtputraḥ sunītyāṃ tu mahāyaśāḥ||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: He had two wives, Sunīti and Suruci. A highly intelligent son of great renown, named Dhruva was born of Sunīti the elder wife. He had great understanding and was the light of the family. When he was seven years old, once he sat in the lap of his father.

Mārkaṇḍeya said: He had two wives, Sunīti and Suruci. A highly intelligent son of great renown, named Dhruva was born of Sunīti the elder wife. He had great understanding and was the light of the family. When he was seven years old, once he sat in the lap of his father.

surucistaṃ vinirdhūya svaputraṃ prītimānasā| nyaveśayattaṃ viprendrā hy aṅkaṃ rūpeṇa mānitā||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: O leading brahmins, Suruci who was proud of her beauty pushed him away. Delighted in her mind she placed her own son on the lap of his father.

अलब्ध्वा स पितुर्धीमान अङ्कं दुःखितमानसः। मातुः समीपमागम्य रुरोद स पुनः पुनः।।
alabdhvā sa piturdhīmān aṅkaṃ duḥkhitamānasaḥ| mātuḥ samīpamāgamya ruroda sa punaḥ punaḥ||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: The intelligent boy Dhruva became dejected in his mind because he was unable to occupy the lap of his father. He went to his mother and lamented.

रुदन्तं पुत्रमाहेदं माता शोकपरिप्लुता। सुरुचिर्दयिता भर्तुस तस्याः पुत्रो ऽपि तादृशः।।
rudantaṃ putramāhedaṃ mātā śokapariplutā| surucirdayitā bhartus tasyāḥ putro 'pi tādṛśaḥ||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: Overwhelmed by her grief the mother said to her weeping son:—“Suruci is the most beloved of her husband. Her son too is likewise.

मम त्वं मन्दभाग्याया जातः पुत्रो ऽप्यभाग्यवान। किं शोचसि किमर्थं त्वं रोदमानः पुनः पुनः।।
mama tvaṃ mandabhāgyāyā jātaḥ putro 'pyabhāgyavān| kiṃ śocasi kimarthaṃ tvaṃ rodamānaḥ punaḥ punaḥ||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: You, a son born of me, a very unfortunate woman, are also equally unfortunate. Why do you bewail? What for do you weep again and again?

संतप्तहृदयो भूत्वा मम शोकं करिष्यसि। स्वस्थस्थानं ध्रुवं पुत्र स्वशक्त्या त्वं समाप्नुयाः।।
saṃtaptahṛdayo bhūtvā mama śokaṃ kariṣyasi| svasthasthānaṃ dhruvaṃ putra svaśaktyā tvaṃ samāpnuyāḥ||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: If you are distressed in heart you will increase my sorrow. My dear son, you shall by your own power attain a more comfortable and stable abode.”

ityuktaḥ sa tu mātrā vai nirjagāma tadā vanam| viśvāmitraṃ tato dṛṣṭvā praṇipatya yathāvidhi||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: On being advised thus by his mother he set out towards the forest. On meeting Viśvāmitra, he bowed to him duly and spoke with his palms joined in reverence:—

Mārkaṇḍeya said: O sage, I was seated on the lap of my father. My step-mother Suruci pushed me aside. My father, the king, did not protest.

एतस्मात कारणाद ब्रह्मंस त्रस्तो ऽहं मातरं गतः। सुनीतिराह मे माता मा कृथाः शोकमुत्तमम।।
etasmāt kāraṇād brahmaṃs trasto 'haṃ mātaraṃ gataḥ| sunītirāha me mātā mā kṛthāḥ śokamuttamam||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: For this very reason, O brahmin, I went to my mother in fright. My mother said to me:—“O son, do not be sorry. You deserve to attain a far greater abode by your own endeavour”. On hearing her words, O great sage, I have come to you for shelter in this forest. O holy sir, O brahmin, I have now met you. By your grace I shall attain the wonderful and excellent abode.

इत्युक्तः स मुनिः श्रीमान प्रहसन्न इदम अब्रवीत। राजपुत्र शृणुष्वेदं स्थानमुत्तममाप्स्यसि।।
ityuktaḥ sa muniḥ śrīmān prahasann idam abravīt| rājaputra śṛṇuṣvedaṃ sthānamuttamamāpsyasi||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: On being requested thus, the glorious sage said laughingly “O Prince, listen to this. You will attain an excellent abode by propitiating Keśava the lord of the worlds, and the destroyer of distress. He is born of the right limb of Śiva the intelligent great lord.[2]

आराध्य जगतामीशं केशवं क्लेशनाशनम। दक्षिणाङ्गभवं शंभोर महादेवस्य धीमतः।।
ārādhya jagatāmīśaṃ keśavaṃ kleśanāśanam| dakṣiṇāṅgabhavaṃ śaṃbhor mahādevasya dhīmataḥ||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: On being requested thus, the glorious sage said laughingly “O Prince, listen to this. You will attain an excellent abode by propitiating Keśava the lord of the worlds, and the destroyer of distress. He is born of the right limb of Śiva the intelligent great lord.[2]

japa nityaṃ mahāprājña sarvapāpavināśanam| iṣṭadaṃ paramaṃ śuddhaṃ pavitramamalaṃ param||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: O highly intelligent one, repeat the Mantra of the lord continuously. It is great, pure and holy, it destroys all sins and yields all desires.

ब्रूहि मन्त्रमिमं दिव्यं प्रणवेन समन्वितम। नमो ऽस्तु वासुदेवाय इत्येवं नियतेन्द्रियः।।
brūhi mantramimaṃ divyaṃ praṇavena samanvitam| namo 'stu vāsudevāya ityevaṃ niyatendriyaḥ||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: Repeat this divine Mantra controlling your sense, with the Praṇava:“namostu vāsudevāya” [Obeisance be to Vāsudeva]. Meditate on the eternal Viṣṇu. Be interested in japa and homa.

ध्यायन्सनातनं विष्णुं जपहोमपरायणः। इत्युक्तः प्रणिपत्यैनं विश्वामित्रं महायशाः।।
dhyāyansanātanaṃ viṣṇuṃ japahomaparāyaṇaḥ| ityuktaḥ praṇipatyainaṃ viśvāmitraṃ mahāyaśāḥ||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: On being advised thus, the boy of great renown bowed to Viśvāmitra and began his japa facing the east He restrained himself and was delighted in his mind. Alertfully he repeated the mantra continuously without break for a year, sustaining himself on vegetables, roots and fruits. Terrible vampires and demons, large fierce beasts like lions rushed at him in order to confound his wits. But, repeating the name Vāsudeva he did not take notice of anything else.

Mārkaṇḍeya said: On being advised thus, the boy of great renown bowed to Viśvāmitra and began his japa facing the east He restrained himself and was delighted in his mind. Alertfully he repeated the mantra continuously without break for a year, sustaining himself on vegetables, roots and fruits. sunītir asya yā mātā tasyā rūpeṇa saṃvṛtā| piśāci samanuprāptā ruroda bhṛśaduḥkhitā||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: A female ghost assuming the form of his mother Sunīti came near him and wept bitterly and miserably.

मम त्वमेकः पुत्रो ऽसि किमर्थं क्लिश्यते भवान। मामनाथामपहाय तप आस्थितवानसि।।
mama tvamekaḥ putro 'si kimarthaṃ kliśyate bhavān| māmanāthāmapahāya tapa āsthitavānasi||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: “O you are my only son. Why do you torture yourself? Leaving me helpless, you have taken to penance”.

एवमादीनि वाक्यानि भाषमाणां महातपाः। अनिरीक्ष्यैव हृष्टात्मा हरेर्नाम जजाप सः।।
evamādīni vākyāni bhāṣamāṇāṃ mahātapāḥ| anirīkṣyaiva hṛṣṭātmā harernāma jajāpa saḥ||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: “O you are my only son. Why do you torture yourself? Leaving me helpless, you have taken to penance”.

ततः प्रशेमुः सर्वत्र विघ्नरूपाणि तत्र वै। ततो गरुडमारुह्य कालमेघसमद्युतिः।।
tataḥ praśemuḥ sarvatra vighnarūpāṇi tatra vai| tato garuḍamāruhya kālameghasamadyutiḥ||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then all the forms of impediment and harassment subsided from all sides. Seated on Garuḍa lord Viṣṇu who resembled the black cloud in lustre, who is the destroyer of enemies, who was surrounded by Devas and who was being eulogised by great sages, came there before Dhruva.

सर्वदेवैः परिवृतः स्तूयमानो महर्षिभिः। आययौ भगवान्विष्णुः ध्रुवान्तिकम अरातिहा।।
sarvadevaiḥ parivṛtaḥ stūyamāno maharṣibhiḥ| āyayau bhagavānviṣṇuḥ dhruvāntikam arātihā||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then all the forms of impediment and harassment subsided from all sides. Seated on Garuḍa lord Viṣṇu who resembled the black cloud in lustre, who is the destroyer of enemies, who was surrounded by Devas and who was being eulogised by great sages, came there before Dhruva.

समागतं विलोक्याथ को ऽसावित्येव चिन्तयन। पिबन्निव हृषीकेशं नयनाभ्यां जगत्पतिम।।
samāgataṃ vilokyātha ko 'sāvityeva cintayan| pibanniva hṛṣīkeśaṃ nayanābhyāṃ jagatpatim||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: On seeing the lord come near, he simply thought within his mind “who is this?” Drinking as it were Hṛṣikeśa the lord of the Universe, by his eyes the boy of great lustre, seated himself and repeated “Vāsudeva”. With the tip of his conch the lord touched his face.

जपन स वासुदेवेति ध्रुवस्तस्थौ महाद्युतिः। शङ्खप्रान्तेन गोविन्दः पस्पर्शास्यं हि तस्य वै।।

Mārkaṇḍeya said: On seeing the lord come near, he simply thought within his mind “who is this?” Drinking as it were Hṛṣikeśa the lord of the Universe, by his eyes the boy of great lustre, seated himself and repeated “Vāsudeva”. With the tip of his conch the lord touched his face.

ततः स परमं ज्ञानम अवाप्य पुरुषोत्तमम। तुष्टाव प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा सर्वलोकेश्वरं हरिम।।
tataḥ sa paramaṃ jñānam avāpya puruṣottamam| tuṣṭāva prāñjalirbhūtvā sarvalokeśvaraṃ harim||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: Thereupon he attained the highest knowledge. With his palms joined in reverence he eulogised the lord the most excellent of all divine beings.

प्रसीद देवदेवेश शङ्खचक्रगदाधर। लोकात्मन वेदगुह्यात्मन त्वां प्रपन्नो ऽस्मि केशव।।
prasīda devadeveśa śaṅkhacakragadādhara| lokātman vedaguhyātman tvāṃ prapanno 'smi keśava||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: Be favourable, O lord of the chiefs of Devas, O wielder of conch, discus and iron club! O soul of the worlds! O soul of all, O soul of all secrets of the Vedas, O Keśava, I have sought refuge in you.

न विदुस्त्वां महात्मानं सनकाद्या महर्षयः। तत्कथं त्वामहं विद्यां नमस्ते भुवनेश्वर।।
na vidustvāṃ mahātmānaṃ sanakādyā maharṣayaḥ| tatkathaṃ tvāmahaṃ vidyāṃ namaste bhuvaneśvara||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: Even the great sages Sanaka and others have not comprehended you, the great Ātman. Then how can I know you? O lord of the worlds, obeisance to you.

तमाह प्रहसन्विष्णुर एहि वत्स ध्रुवो भवान। स्थानं ध्रुवं समासाद्य ज्योतिषाम अग्रभुग भव।।
tamāha prahasanviṣṇur ehi vatsa dhruvo bhavān| sthānaṃ dhruvaṃ samāsādya jyotiṣām agrabhug bhava||
Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then Viṣṇu said to him smiling:—“O dear one, come on. You are Dhruva (steady). Attaining a fixed and steady abode be the first among all luminaries.

Mārkaṇḍeya said: It was acquired by me from lord Śiva formerly after propitiating him by penance. The devotee who repeats continuously the name Vāsudeva along with the Praṇava ‘om’ the word ‘Bhagavat’ and the word ‘namas’ denoting obeisance attains the fixed abode of Dhruva.”
