इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यमभागे तृतीय उपोद्धातपादे धन्वन्तरिसंभवादिवर्णनं नाम सप्तषष्टितमो ऽध्यायः।। 67।। मरुतेन कथं कन्या राज्ञे दत्ता महात्मना। किंवीर्याश्च महात्मानो जाता मरुतकन्यया।।
iti śrībrahmāṇḍe mahāpurāṇe vāyuprokte madhyamabhāge tṛtīya upoddhātapāde dhanvantarisaṃbhavādivarṇanaṃ nāma saptaṣaṣṭitamo 'dhyāyaḥ|| 67|| marutena kathaṃ kanyā rājñe dattā mahātmanā| kiṃvīryāśca mahātmāno jātā marutakanyayā||
The sages asked:: How was his daughter given to a king by the noble-souled Maruta (rather Marutta)? Of what heroic ability were the noble-souled persons born of the daughter of Maruta?

आहरत्स मरुत्सोममन्नकामः प्रजेश्वरः। मासिमासि महातेजाः षष्टिसंवत्सरान्नृप।।
āharatsa marutsomamannakāmaḥ prajeśvaraḥ| māsimāsi mahātejāḥ ṣaṣṭisaṃvatsarānnṛpa||
Sūta replied:: That lord of subjects desirous of cooked food, performed the sacrifice Marutsoma. That king of great splendour performed it every month for sixty years.

तेन ते मरुतस्तस्य मरुत्सोमेन तोषिताः। अक्षय्यान्नं ददुः प्रीताः सर्वकामपरिच्छदम।।
tena te marutastasya marutsomena toṣitāḥ| akṣayyānnaṃ daduḥ prītāḥ sarvakāmaparicchadam||
Sūta replied:: The gods, Maruts, were pleased by the sacrifice Marutsoma of that king. Delighted in their heart, they give never-failing cooked food with all the other articles he should desire.

अन्नं तस्य सकृद्भुक्तमहोरात्रं न क्षीयते। कोटिशो दीय मानं च सूर्यस्योदयनादपि।।
annaṃ tasya sakṛdbhuktamahorātraṃ na kṣīyate| koṭiśo dīya mānaṃ ca sūryasyodayanādapi||
Sūta replied:: His food taken in once did not get wasted for a day and a night (i.e. people eating it will not be hungry for twenty-four hours). Starting at sunrise, he used to give food to crores of people (?)

मित्रज्योतेस्तु कन्याया मरितस्य च धीमतः। तस्माज्जाता महासत्त्वा धर्मज्ञा मोक्षदर्शिनः।।
mitrajyotestu kanyāyā maritasya ca dhīmataḥ| tasmājjātā mahāsattvā dharmajñā mokṣadarśinaḥ||
Sūta replied:: To the daughter of Mitrajyoti and the intelligent Maruta were born many sons who were conversant with dharma, could realize salvation and who were endowed with great intrinsic strength.

संन्यस्य गृहधर्माणि वैराग्यं समुपस्थिताः। यतिधर्ममवाप्येह ब्रह्मभूयाय ते गताः।।
saṃnyasya gṛhadharmāṇi vairāgyaṃ samupasthitāḥ| yatidharmamavāpyeha brahmabhūyāya te gatāḥ||
Sūta replied:: They renounced the rites and vows pertaining to the householder and adopted Vairāgya (non-attachment to worldly desires or objects). After taking up the duties of recluses they attained salvation.

अनेनसः सुतो जातः क्षत्रधर्मः प्रतापवान। क्षत्रधर्मसुतो जातः प्रतिपक्षो महातपाः।।
anenasaḥ suto jātaḥ kṣatradharmaḥ pratāpavān| kṣatradharmasuto jātaḥ pratipakṣo mahātapāḥ||
Sūta replied:: Kṣatra-Dharma was the valorous son of Anenas. Pratipakṣa of great penance was born as the son of Kṣatradharma.

प्रतिपक्षसुतश्चापि सृंजयो नाम विश्रुतः। सृंजयस्य जयः पुत्रो विजयस्तस्य जज्ञिवान।।
pratipakṣasutaścāpi sṛṃjayo nāma viśrutaḥ| sṛṃjayasya jayaḥ putro vijayastasya jajñivān||
Sūta replied:: Sṛñjaya, the son of Pratipakṣa, became well-known. Jaya was the son of Sṛñjaya. Vijaya was born to him.

विजयस्य जयः पुत्रस्तस्य हर्यश्वकः स्मृतः। इर्यश्वस्य सुतो राजा सहदेवः प्रतापवान।।
vijayasya jayaḥ putrastasya haryaśvakaḥ smṛtaḥ| iryaśvasya suto rājā sahadevaḥ pratāpavān||
Sūta replied:: Jaya the second, was the son of Vijaya. Haryaśvaka is remembered as his son. The valorous king Sahaḍeva was the son of Haryaśva.

सहदेवस्य धर्मात्मा अहीन इति विश्रुतः। अहीनस्य चयत्सेनस्तस्य पुत्रो ऽथ संकृतिः।।
sahadevasya dharmātmā ahīna iti viśrutaḥ| ahīnasya cayatsenastasya putro 'tha saṃkṛtiḥ||
Sūta replied:: The righteous-souled son of Sahadeva was famous by the name of Ahīna. Jayatsena was the son of Ahīna. His son was Saṅkṛti.

संकृतेरपि धर्मात्मा कृतधर्मा महायशाः। इत्येते क्षत्रधर्माणो नहुषस्य निबोधत।।
saṃkṛterapi dharmātmā kṛtadharmā mahāyaśāḥ| ityete kṣatradharmāṇo nahuṣasya nibodhata||
Sūta replied:: The righteous-souled Kṛtadharman. of great fame was the son of Saṅkṛti. These are the descendants of Āyus of Kṣatriya qualities. Now understand the line of Nahuṣa.

नहुषस्य तु दायादाः षडिन्द्रोपमतेजसः। यतिर्ययातिः संयातिरायतिर्वियतिः कृतिः।।
nahuṣasya tu dāyādāḥ ṣaḍindropamatejasaḥ| yatiryayātiḥ saṃyātirāyatirviyatiḥ kṛtiḥ||
Sūta replied:: Nahuṣa had six sons whose splendour was comparable to that of Indra. They were Yati, Yayāti, Saṃyāti, Āyāti Viyāti and Kṛti.

यतिर्ज्येष्ठस्तु तेषां वै ययातिस्तु ततो ऽवरः। काकुत्स्थकन्यां गां नाम लेभे पत्नीं यतिस्तदा।।
yatirjyeṣṭhastu teṣāṃ vai yayātistu tato 'varaḥ| kākutsthakanyāṃ gāṃ nāma lebhe patnīṃ yatistadā||
Sūta replied:: Yati was the eldest among them. Yayāti was his younger brother. Yati got as his wife the daughter of Kākutstha, named Gau.

स यतिर्मोक्षमास्थाय ब्रह्मभूतो ऽभवन्मुनिः। तेषां मध्ये तु पञ्चानां ययातिः पृथिवीपतिः।।
sa yatirmokṣamāsthāya brahmabhūto 'bhavanmuniḥ| teṣāṃ madhye tu pañcānāṃ yayātiḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ||
Sūta replied:: Yati adopted the path of salvation. He became a sage and became one with Brahman. Among the other five, it was Yayāti who became king.

देवयानीमुशनसः सुतां भार्यामवाप ह। शर्मिष्ठामासुरीं चैव तनयां वृषपर्वणः।।
devayānīmuśanasaḥ sutāṃ bhāryāmavāpa ha| śarmiṣṭhāmāsurīṃ caiva tanayāṃ vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ||
Sūta replied:: He got Devayānī, the daughter of Uśanas, and Śarmiṣṭhā the Asura lady and daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, as his wives.

यदुं च तुर्वसुं चैव देवयानो व्यजायत। द्रुह्युं चानुं च पूरुं च शर्मिष्ठा वार्षपर्वणी।।
yaduṃ ca turvasuṃ caiva devayāno vyajāyata| druhyuṃ cānuṃ ca pūruṃ ca śarmiṣṭhā vārṣaparvaṇī||
Sūta replied:: Devayānī gave birth to Yadu and Turvasu. Śarmiṣṭhā, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, gave birth to Druhyu, Anu and Pūru, sons of great prowess and comparable to the sons of the Devas.

Sūta replied:: Devayānī gave birth to Yadu and Turvasu. Śarmiṣṭhā, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, gave birth to Druhyu, Anu and Pūru, sons of great prowess and comparable to the sons of the Devas.

asaṃgaṃ kāñcanaṃ divyamakṣayau ca maheṣudhī| yuktaṃ manojavairaśvairyena kanyāṃ samudvahat||
Sūta replied:: Devayānī gave birth to Yadu and Turvasu. Śarmiṣṭhā, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, gave birth to Druhyu, Anu and Pūru, sons of great prowess and comparable to the sons of the Devas.

स तेन रथमुख्येन जिगाय सततं महीम। ययातिर्युधि दुर्द्धर्षो देवदानवमानवैः।।
sa tena rathamukhyena jigāya satataṃ mahīm| yayātiryudhi durddharṣo devadānavamānavaiḥ||
Sūta replied:: With that pre-eminent chariot, he constantly conquered the different kingdoms on the earth. Yayāti was invincible in battle to the Devas, Dānavas and human beings.

पौरवाणां नृपाणां च सर्वेषां सो ऽभवद्रथी। यावत्सुदेशप्रभवः कौरवो जनमेजयः।।
pauravāṇāṃ nṛpāṇāṃ ca sarveṣāṃ so 'bhavadrathī| yāvatsudeśaprabhavaḥ kauravo janamejayaḥ||
Sūta replied:: That chariot continued to be with all the kings of Pūru’s line upto Janamejaya, the son of Kaurava dynasty. That chariot disappeared when it reached Pārīkṣita, the king who was the grandson of Kuru. It disappeared due to the curse of the intelligent Gārgya.

कुरोः पौत्रस्य राज्ञरतु राज्ञः पारीक्षितस्य ह। जगाम सरथो नाशं शापाद्गार्ग्यस्य धीमतः।।
kuroḥ pautrasya rājñaratu rājñaḥ pārīkṣitasya ha| jagāma saratho nāśaṃ śāpādgārgyasya dhīmataḥ||
Sūta replied:: That chariot continued to be with all the kings of Pūru’s line upto Janamejaya, the son of Kaurava dynasty. That chariot disappeared when it reached Pārīkṣita, the king who was the grandson of Kuru. It disappeared due to the curse of the intelligent Gārgya.

gārgyasya hi sutaṃ bālaṃ sa rājā janamejayaḥ| durbuddhirhiṃsayā māsa lohagandhī narādhipaḥ||
Sūta replied:: That king Janamejaya who was evil-minded and who was known as Lohagandhī (Having the odour of iron) also, killed a boy, the son of Gārgya.

स लोहगन्धी राजर्षिः परिधावन्नितस्ततः। पौरजानपदैस्त्यक्तो न लेभे शर्म कर्हिचित।।
sa lohagandhī rājarṣiḥ paridhāvannitastataḥ| paurajānapadaistyakto na lebhe śarma karhicit||
Sūta replied:: Abandoned (Banished) by the citizens and people of the outlying districts, that king Lohagandhī ran about here and there. He did not get happiness or mental peace anywhere.

ततः स दुःखसंतप्तो नालभत्संविदं क्वचित। स प्रायाच्छौनकमृषिं शरणं व्यथितस्तदा।।
tataḥ sa duḥkhasaṃtapto nālabhatsaṃvidaṃ kvacita| sa prāyācchaunakamṛṣiṃ śaraṇaṃ vyathitastadā||
Sūta replied:: Distressed with sorrow and misery as he was, he did not get sympathetic understanding from anyone anywhere. Utterly dejected he sought refuge in the sage Śaunaka.

इन्द्रोतोनाम विख्यातो यो ऽसौ मुनि रुदारधीः। योजयामास चैन्द्रोतः शौनको जनमेजयम।।
indrotonāma vikhyāto yo 'sau muni rudāradhīḥ| yojayāmāsa caindrotaḥ śaunako janamejayam||
Sūta replied:: This sage of liberal and exalted intellect was famous under the name Indrota. For the sake of sanctity, Indrota Śaunaka made king Janamejaya perform a horse-sacrifice, O excellent Brāhmaṇas. After reaching the stage of Avabhṛtha (valedictory bath after horse-sacrifice) the king Lohagandhī died.

अश्वमेधेन राजानं पावनार्थं द्विजोत्तमाः। स लोहगन्धो व्यनशत्त स्यावभृथमेत्य ह।।
aśvamedhena rājānaṃ pāvanārthaṃ dvijottamāḥ| sa lohagandho vyanaśatta syāvabhṛthametya ha||
Sūta replied:: This sage of liberal and exalted intellect was famous under the name Indrota. For the sake of sanctity, Indrota Śaunaka made king Janamejaya perform a horse-sacrifice, O excellent Brāhmaṇas. After reaching the stage of Avabhṛtha (valedictory bath after horse-sacrifice) the king Lohagandhī died.

Sūta replied:: That divine chariot was taken away from him and given to (Uparicara) Vasu, the king of Cedi, by Indra who was pleased with him. Bṛhadratha got it from him.

tato hatvā jarāsaṃdhaṃ bhīmastaṃ rathamuttamam| pradadau vāsudevāya prītyā kauravanandanaḥ||
Sūta replied:: That divine chariot was taken away from him and given to (Uparicara) Vasu, the king of Cedi, by Indra who was pleased with him. Bṛhadratha got it from him.

स जरां प्राप्य राजर्षिर्ययातिर्नहुषात्मजः। पुत्रं श्रेष्टं वरिष्ठं च यदुमित्यब्रवीद्वचः।।
sa jarāṃ prāpya rājarṣiryayātirnahuṣātmajaḥ| putraṃ śreṣṭaṃ variṣṭhaṃ ca yadumityabravīdvacaḥ||
Sūta replied:: That saintly king Yayāti, the son ofNahuṣa, attained old age. He then spoke these words to Yadu, his eldest and the most excellent son.

जरावली च मां तात पलितानि च पर्ययुः। काव्यस्योशनसः शापान्न च तृप्तो ऽस्मि यौवने।।
jarāvalī ca māṃ tāta palitāni ca paryayuḥ| kāvyasyośanasaḥ śāpānna ca tṛpto 'smi yauvane||
Sūta replied:: “Dear son, wrinkles, grey hair and other infirmities of old age have overpowered (lit. encircled) me on account of the curse of Uśanas. But I am not content with the pleasures of youth.

त्वं यदो प्रतिपद्यस्व पाप्मानं जरया सह। जरां मे प्रतिगृह्णीष्व तं यदुः प्रत्युवाच ह।।
tvaṃ yado pratipadyasva pāpmānaṃ jarayā saha| jarāṃ me pratigṛhṇīṣva taṃ yaduḥ pratyuvāca ha||
Sūta replied:: O Yadu, accept my sin along with ṃy old age. Accept my old age.”

अनिर्दिष्टा हि मे भिक्षा ब्राह्मणस्य प्रतिश्रुता। सा तु व्यायामसाध्या वै न ग्रहीष्यामि ते जराम।।
anirdiṣṭā hi me bhikṣā brāhmaṇasya pratiśrutā| sā tu vyāyāmasādhyā vai na grahīṣyāmi te jarām||
Sūta replied:: “A request for alms (of an unspecified nature) by a Brāhmaṇa has been promised but not fulfilled by me. It can be accomplished only through physical exertions. I will not take up your old age. There are many deficiencies and ailments in old age caused by food and beverage. Hence, O king, I dare not take up your old age. I do not wish to be afflicted by old age, while in youth, along with the people with sacred threads (i.e. aged Brāhmaṇas)(I do not want to be) a wretched fellow having a white beard and moustaches, rendered infirm by old age and having wrinkles covering up the whole body. (And old man) is desperate, weak in physique and incapable of doing his daily work (I do not wish to be so in my youth). I ḍo not like old age at all. You have many sons, O king, dearer to you than I. Let them accept (the old age), O king conversant with Dharma (piety and virtue), choose some other soil”.

जरायां बहवो दोषाः पानभोजनकारिताः। तस्माज्जरां न ते राजन्ग्रहीतुमहमुत्सहे।।
jarāyāṃ bahavo doṣāḥ pānabhojanakāritāḥ| tasmājjarāṃ na te rājangrahītumahamutsahe||
Sūta replied:: “A request for alms (of an unspecified nature) by a Brāhmaṇa has been promised but not fulfilled by me. It can be accomplished only through physical exertions. I will not take up your old age. There are many deficiencies and ailments in old age caused by food and beverage. Hence, O king, I dare not take up your old age. I do not wish to be afflicted by old age, while in youth, along with the people with sacred threads (i.e. aged Brāhmaṇas)(I do not want to be) a wretched fellow having a white beard and moustaches, rendered infirm by old age and having wrinkles covering up the whole body. Sūta replied:: “A request for alms (of an unspecified nature) by a Brāhmaṇa has been promised but not fulfilled by me. It can be accomplished only through physical exertions. I will not take up your old age. There are many deficiencies and ailments in old age caused by food and beverage. Hence, O king, I dare not take up your old age. I do not wish to be afflicted by old age, while in youth, along with the people with sacred threads (i.e. aged Brāhmaṇas)(I do not want to be) a wretched fellow having a white beard and moustaches, rendered infirm by old age and having wrinkles covering up the whole body. Sūta replied:: “A request for alms (of an unspecified nature) by a Brāhmaṇa has been promised but not fulfilled by me. It can be accomplished only through physical exertions. I will not take up your old age. There are many deficiencies and ailments in old age caused by food and beverage. Hence, O king, I dare not take up your old age.
