upoddhātapāde bhārgavacarite kārttavīryavadho nāma catvāriṃśattamo 'dhyāyaḥ|| 40|| dṛṣṭvā piturvadhaṃ ghoraṃ tatputrāste śataṃ tvarā| vārayāmāsuratyugraṃ bhārgavaṃ svabaleḥ pṛthak||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: On seeing the terrible killing of their father, the hundred sons of Kārttavīrya hurriedly resisted the excessively terrible Bhārgava severally, by means of their respective armies.

ekaikākṣaihiṇīyuktāḥ sarve te yuddhadurmadāḥ| saṃgrāmaṃ tumulaṃ cakruḥ saṃrabdhāstu piturvadhāt||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: Extremely infuriated at the death of their father all those sons who had an Akṣauhiṇī each and who were extremely ferocious in battle, offered a tumultuous fight.

Vasiṣṭha continued:: On seeing his heroic sons who were proficient in battle, Rāma took up his axe and fought with them in battle.

tāṃ senāṃ bhagavānrāmaḥ śatākṣauhiṇisaṃmitām| nijaghāna tvarāyukto muhurttadvayamātrataḥ||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: Within a short period of only two Muhūrtas, Rāma hurriedly slew that army consisting of a hundred Akṣauhiṇīs.

niḥśeṣitaṃ svasainyaṃ tu kuṭhāreṇaiva līlayā| dṛṣṭvā rāmeṇa tesarve yuyudhurvīryasaṃmatāḥ||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: On seeing their armies sportingly annihilated with his axe by Rāma, all of them of highly esteemed valour, fought with Rāma.

nānāvidhāni divyāni praharanto mahojasaḥ| parito maṇḍalaṃ cakrurbhārgavasya mahātmanaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: Striking with different kinds of divine weapons, those sons of great valour and prowess encircled the noble-souled Bhārgava.

atha rāmo 'pi balavāṃsteṣāṃ maṇḍalamadhyagaḥ| vireje bhagavānsākṣādyathā nābhistu cakragā||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: The powerful holy lord Rāma, stationed in the middle of their circle, shone like the navel of a wheel.

नृत्यन्निवाचौ विरराज रामः शतं पुनस्ते परितो भ्रमन्तः। रेजुश्च गोपी गणमध्यसंस्थः कृष्णो यथा ताः परितो भ्रमन्त्यः।।
nṛtyannivācau virarāja rāmaḥ śataṃ punaste parito bhramantaḥ| rejuśca gopī gaṇamadhyasaṃsthaḥ kṛṣṇo yathā tāḥ parito bhramantyaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: While the hundred princes were encircling him, Rāma (facing each of them) shone as if dancing in the battle like Lord Kṛṣṇa in the midst of Gopīs (cow-herd girls of Vṛndāvana at the time of Rāsa dance), and they appeared glorious like the Gopīs adance around Kṛṣṇa.

तदा तु सर्वे द्रुहिणप्रधानाः समागताः स्वस्वविमानसंस्थाः। समाकिरन्नन्दनमाल्यवर्षैः समन्ततो राममहीनवीर्यम।।
tadā tu sarve druhiṇapradhānāḥ samāgatāḥ svasvavimānasaṃsthāḥ| samākirannandanamālyavarṣaiḥ samantato rāmamahīnavīryam||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: Then the Devas with Brahmā as their leader came there seated in their respective aerial chariots. They showered Rāma of no unabated vigour, with garlands of flowers from the Nandana garden in the heaven.

यः शस्त्रपादादुदतिष्ठत ध्वनिर हुंकारगर्भो दिवमस्पृशन्स वै। तौर्यत्रिकस्येव शरक्षतानि भान्तीव यद्वन्नखदन्तपाताः।।
yaḥ śastrapādādudatiṣṭhata dhvanir huṃkāragarbho divamaspṛśansa vai| tauryatrikasyeva śarakṣatāni bhāntīva yadvannakhadantapātāḥ||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: The sound produced by the clash of weapons mingled with Huṃkāras (sounds of Huṃ) reached the firmament like that of the triple symphony. The wounds caused by the arrows appeared like those caused by nails and teeth.

क्रन्दन्ति शस्त्रैः क्षतविक्षताङ्गा गायन्ति यद्वत्किल गीतविज्ञाः। एवं प्रवृत्तं नृपयुद्धमण्डलं पश्यन्ति देवा भृशविस्मिताक्षः।।
krandanti śastraiḥ kṣatavikṣatāṅgā gāyanti yadvatkila gītavijñāḥ| evaṃ pravṛttaṃ nṛpayuddhamaṇḍalaṃ paśyanti devā bhṛśavismitākṣaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: Those who had been wounded and injured with the weapons began to scream like experts in vocal music who sang at a high pitch. The Devas with eyes expressive of great wonder surveyed the battle zone of the kings that proceeded like this.

ततस्तु रामो ऽवनिपालपुत्राञ्जिघांसुराजौ विविधास्त्रपूगैः। पृथक्चकारातिब लांस्तु मण्डलद्विच्छिद्य पङ्क्तिं प्रभुरात्तचापः।।
tatastu rāmo 'vanipālaputrāñjighāṃsurājau vividhāstrapūgaiḥ| pṛthakcakārātiba lāṃstu maṇḍaladvicchidya paṅktiṃ prabhurāttacāpaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: Desirous of killing the sons of the king in. battle by means of different kinds of excellent missiles, Rāma, the powerful lord wielding his bow, separated the stronger ones from the group and formed a new line.

एकैकशस्तान्निजघान वीराञ्छतं तदा पञ्च ततः पलायिताः। शूरो वृषास्यो वृषशूरसेनौ जयध्वजश्चापि विभिन्नधैर्याः।।
ekaikaśastānnijaghāna vīrāñchataṃ tadā pañca tataḥ palāyitāḥ| śūro vṛṣāsyo vṛṣaśūrasenau jayadhvajaścāpi vibhinnadhairyāḥ||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: He killed those heroic warriors one by one. Out of the hundred, five fled losing all courage viz. Śūra, Vṛṣāsya, Vṛṣasena, Śūrasena and Jayadhvaja.

महाभयेनाथ परीतचिता हिमाद्रिपादान्तरकाननं च। पृथग्गतास्ते सुपरीप्सवो नृपा न को ऽपि कांस्विद्ददृशे भृशार्त्तः।।
mahābhayenātha parītacitā himādripādāntarakānanaṃ ca| pṛthaggatāste suparīpsavo nṛpā na ko 'pi kāṃsviddadṛśe bhṛśārttaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: With their minds filled with great fright and desirous of protecting their lives, those princes went into the forests at the foot of the Himalayas severally (Each entering a separate forest). None of those afflicted and unhappy ones was seen afterwards.

रामो ऽपि हत्वा नृपचक्रमाजौ राज्ञः सहायर्थमुपागतं च। समन्वितो ऽसावकृतव्रणेन सस्नौ मुदागत्य च नर्मदायाम।।
rāmo 'pi hatvā nṛpacakramājau rājñaḥ sahāyarthamupāgataṃ ca| samanvito 'sāvakṛtavraṇena sasnau mudāgatya ca narmadāyām||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: After slaying the other kings also who had gathered there to assist king Kārttavīrya, Rāma, accompanied by Akṛtavraṇa joyously came to the river Narmadā and took his bath.

स्रात्वा नित्यक्रियां कृत्वा संपूज्य वृषभध्वजम। प्रतस्थे द्रष्टुमुर्वीश शिवं कैलासवासिनम।।
srātvā nityakriyāṃ kṛtvā saṃpūjya vṛṣabhadhvajam| pratasthe draṣṭumurvīśa śivaṃ kailāsavāsinam||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: After taking bath, performing his daily rites and worshipping the bull-emblemed lord, O lord of the Earth, he set off in order to visit Lord Śiva, the resident of the Kailāsa mountain.

गुरुपत्नीमुमां चापि सुतौ स्कन्दविनायकौ। मनोयायी महात्मासावकृतव्रणसंयुतः।।
gurupatnīmumāṃ cāpi sutau skandavināyakau| manoyāyī mahātmāsāvakṛtavraṇasaṃyutaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: He wanted also to meet Umā, the consort of his preceptor and Skanda and Vināyaka their sons. This noble-souled sage accompanied by Akṛtavraṇa went on with the speed of the mind.

कृतकार्यो मुदा युक्तः कैलासं प्राप्य तत्क्षणम। ददर्श तत्र नगरीं महतीमलकाभिधम।।
kṛtakāryo mudā yuktaḥ kailāsaṃ prāpya tatkṣaṇam| dadarśa tatra nagarīṃ mahatīmalakābhidham||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: After completing his task, he rejoiced much. Reaching the Kailāsa mountain instantly, he saw the great city named Alakā.

नानामणिगणाकीर्णभवनैरुपशोभिताम। नानारुपधरैर्यक्षैः शोभितां चित्रभूषणैः।।
nānāmaṇigaṇākīrṇabhavanairupaśobhitām| nānārupadharairyakṣaiḥ śobhitāṃ citrabhūṣaṇaiḥ||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: It was rendered beautiful by the mansions and palaces studded with different kinds of previous gems and jewels. It appeared splendid, due to the Yakṣas who had assumed various forms and who had ornaments of different and wonderful types.

नानावृक्षसमाकीणैर्वनैश्चोपवनैर्युताम। दीर्घिकाभिः सुदीर्घाभिस्तडागैश्चोपशोभिताम।।
nānāvṛkṣasamākīṇairvanaiścopavanairyutām| dīrghikābhiḥ sudīrghābhistaḍāgaiścopaśobhitām||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: It was full of groves, parks and gardens abounding in many types of trees. It was rendered beautiful by very large lakes and tanks.

tasyādhastādvarāvāsaṃ susevyaṃ siddhasaṃyutam| dadarṃśa tatra prākāraṃ śatayojanamaṇḍalam||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: Beneath it, there was an excellent abode that was connected with the Siddhas and that was worthy of residence. There he saw a rampart wall extending to a hundred Yojanas.

नानारत्नाचितं रम्यं चतुर्द्वारं गणावृतम। नन्दीश्वरं महाकालं रक्ताक्षं विकटोदरम।।
nānāratnācitaṃ ramyaṃ caturdvāraṃ gaṇāvṛtam| nandīśvaraṃ mahākālaṃ raktākṣaṃ vikaṭodaram||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: It was studded with different kinds of precious stones and jewels. It was beautiful with four gateways. It was filled with Gaṇas. He saw Nandīśvara, Mahākāla, Raktākṣa, Vikaṭodara, Piṅgalākṣa, Viśālākṣa, Virūpākṣa, Ghaṭodara, Mandāra, Bhairava, Bāṇa, Ruru who was very terrible, Vīraka, Vīrabhadra, Caṇḍa Bhṛṅgi, Riṭi, Mukha, leading Siddhas, Nāthas, Rudras, Vidvādharas, the great serpents, the Bhūtas, Pretas, Piśācas, Kūṣmāṇḍas, Brahma-Rākṣasas Vetālas leading Dānavas, leading Yogins with matted hair, Yakṣas, Kimpuruṣas, Ḍākinīs and Yoginīs.

piṅgalākṣaṃ viśālākṣaṃ virūpākṣaṃ ghaṭodaram| mandāraṃ bhairavaṃ bāṇaṃ ruruṃ bhairavameva ca||
Vasiṣṭha continued:: It was studded with different kinds of precious stones and jewels. It was beautiful with four gateways. It was filled with Gaṇas. Vasiṣṭha continued:: It was studded with different kinds of precious stones and jewels. It was beautiful with four gateways. It was filled with Gaṇas.
