इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यभागे तृतीय उपोद्धातपादे श्राद्धकल्पे ऽशौचविधिर्नाम चतुर्दशो ऽध्योयः।। 14।। अहो धन्यस्त्वया सूत श्राद्धकल्पः प्रकीर्तितः। श्रुता नः श्राद्धकल्पास्तु ऋषिभिर्ये प्रकीर्त्तिताः।।
iti śrībrahmāṇḍe mahāpurāṇe vāyuprokte madhyabhāge tṛtīya upoddhātapāde śrāddhakalpe 'śaucavidhirnāma caturdaśo 'dhyoyaḥ|| 14|| aho dhanyastvayā sūta śrāddhakalpaḥ prakīrtitaḥ| śrutā naḥ śrāddhakalpāstu ṛṣibhirye prakīrttitāḥ||
The sages said:: “O Sūta, the Śrāddha-kalpa conducive to richness, has been recounted by you. The Śrāddha-kalpas that had been glorified by the sages have been heard by us. Its extensive details have been particularly recounted. Tell us, O intelligent one the real opinion of that sage.”

atīva vistaro hyasya viśeṣeṇa tu kīrttitaḥ| devāśeṣaṃ mahāprājña ṛṣestasya mataṃ yathā||
The sages said:: “O Sūta, the Śrāddha-kalpa conducive to richness, has been recounted by you. The Śrāddha-kalpas that had been glorified by the sages have been heard by us. Its extensive details have been particularly recounted. Tell us, O intelligent one the real opinion of that sage.”

कीर्त्तयिष्यामि वो विप्रा ऋषेस्तस्य मतं तु यत। श्राद्धं प्रति महाभागस्तन्मे श्रुणुत विस्तरात।।
kīrttayiṣyāmi vo viprā ṛṣestasya mataṃ tu yat| śrāddhaṃ prati mahābhāgastanme śruṇuta vistarāt||
Sūta replied: “I shall recount, O Brāhmaṇas, what the opinion of that sage was, regarding Śrāddha. Even as I recount it in detail listen to it, O fortunate one.

उक्तं श्राद्धंमया पूर्वं विधिश्च श्राद्धकर्मणि। परिशिष्टं प्रवक्ष्यामि ब्रह्मणानां परिक्षणम।।
uktaṃ śrāddhaṃmayā pūrvaṃ vidhiśca śrāddhakarmaṇi| pariśiṣṭaṃ pravakṣyāmi brahmaṇānāṃ parikṣaṇam||
Sūta replied: Śrāddha has been detailed by me before. The injunctions and rules of procedure in Śrāddha rite have also been mentioned. I shall (now) explain the tests for selecting the deserving Brāhmaṇas which has remained to be mentioned.

न मीमांस्याः सदा विप्राः पवित्रंह्येतदुत्तमम। दैवे पित्र्ये च नियतं श्रूयते वै परीक्षणम।।
na mīmāṃsyāḥ sadā viprāḥ pavitraṃhyetaduttamam| daive pitrye ca niyataṃ śrūyate vai parīkṣaṇam||
Sūta replied: Brāhmaṇas should not be investigated upon and examined on all occasions. But in the rites regarding the Devas and the Pitṛs the method of testing them is invariably laid down as sacred and excellent.

यस्मिन्दोषाः प्रदृश्येरम्स हि कार्येषु वर्जितः। जानीयाद्वापि संवासाद्वर्जयेत्तं प्रयत्नतः।।
yasmindoṣāḥ pradṛśyeramsa hi kāryeṣu varjitaḥ| jānīyādvāpi saṃvāsādvarjayettaṃ prayatnataḥ||
Sūta replied: The person in whom defects are found is excluded from the rites. One shall scrupulously avoid that person whose faults one knows, due to the fact of staying together.

अविज्ञातं द्विजं श्राद्धे न परीक्षेत पण्डितः। सिद्धा हि विप्ररूपेण चरन्ति पृथिवीमिमाम।।
avijñātaṃ dvijaṃ śrāddhe na parīkṣeta paṇḍitaḥ| siddhā hi viprarūpeṇa caranti pṛthivīmimām||
Sūta replied: A learned man should not investigate (too deeply) into a totally unknown Brāhmaṇa stranger in regard to the Śrāddha rite. For, many Siddhas wander over this Earth in the guise of Brāhmaṇas.

तस्मादतिथिमायान्तमभिगच्छेत्कृताञ्जलिः। पूजयेच्चार्घ्यपाद्याभ्यां तथाभ्यञ्जनभोजनैः।।
tasmādatithimāyāntamabhigacchetkṛtāñjaliḥ| pūjayeccārghyapādyābhyāṃ tathābhyañjanabhojanaiḥ||
Sūta replied: Hence, when a guest approaches one, one should welcome him with palms joined in reverence. One should worship and honour him with articles of worship, water for washing feet as well as oil bath and meal.

उर्वी सागरपर्यन्तां देवा योगेश्वरः सदा। नानारूपैश्चरन्त्येते प्रजा धर्मेण योजयन।।
urvī sāgaraparyantāṃ devā yogeśvaraḥ sadā| nānārūpaiścarantyete prajā dharmeṇa yojayan||
Sūta replied: Devas and lords of Yogic cult and practice assuming different guises always move about over the vast Earth extending up to the Seas on all sides. While doing so they make the common people maintain virtue and piety.

तस्माद्दद्यात्सदा दान्तः समभ्यार्च्यातिथिं नरः। व्यञ्जनानि तु वक्ष्यामि फलं तेषां तथैव च।।
tasmāddadyātsadā dāntaḥ samabhyārcyātithiṃ naraḥ| vyañjanāni tu vakṣyāmi phalaṃ teṣāṃ tathaiva ca||
Sūta replied: Hence, a man of perfect self-control should honour the guest and feed him with various side dishes. I shall mention them as well as the fruit thereof.

अग्निष्टोमं पयसा प्राप्नुयाद्वै फलं तथोक्थस्य च पायसेन। सषोडशी सत्रफलं घृतेन मध्वातिरात्रस्य फलं तथैव।।
agniṣṭomaṃ payasā prāpnuyādvai phalaṃ tathokthasya ca pāyasena| saṣoḍaśī satraphalaṃ ghṛtena madhvātirātrasya phalaṃ tathaiva||
Sūta replied: If he honours the guest by offering milk, he attains the benefit of Agniṣṭoma sacrifice, if he honours the guest with milk pudding, he attains the benefit of Uktha; if he honours the guest with ghee, he attains the benefit of ṣoḍaśi Satra and if he honours the guest with honey he attains the benefit of Atirātra.

तथाप्नुयाच्छ्रद्दधा नो नरो वै सर्वैः कामैर्भोजयेद्यस्तु विप्रान। सर्वार्थदं सर्वविप्रातिथेयं फलं च भुङ्क्ते सर्वमेधस्य नित्यम।।
tathāpnuyācchraddadhā no naro vai sarvaiḥ kāmairbhojayedyastu viprān| sarvārthadaṃ sarvaviprātitheyaṃ phalaṃ ca bhuṅkte sarvamedhasya nityam||
Sūta replied: If a man feeds Brāhmaṇas and gives them every thing they desire, that rite alone bestows on him all wealth. The host of all those Brāhmaṇas always enjoys the benefit of all sacrifices.

यस्तु श्राद्धे ऽतिथिं प्राप्तं दैवे चाप्यवमन्यते। तं वै देवा निरस्यन्ति हतो यद्वत्परावसुः।।
yastu śrāddhe 'tithiṃ prāptaṃ daive cāpyavamanyate| taṃ vai devā nirasyanti hato yadvatparāvasuḥ||
Sūta replied: The Devas reject and discard the person like an accursed destitute—the person who insults and dishonours the guest who approaches him at the time of Śrāddha rite or in a rite pertaining to the Devas.

देवाश्च पितरश्चैव तेमेवान्तर्हिता द्विजम। आविश्य विप्रं मोक्ष्यन्ति लोकानुग्रहकारणात।।
devāśca pitaraścaiva temevāntarhitā dvijam| āviśya vipraṃ mokṣyanti lokānugrahakāraṇāt||
Sūta replied: For the sake of blessing the worlds, the invisible Devas and the Pitṛs enter the Brāhmaṇas and partake of the meal.

अपूजितो दहत्येष दिशेत्कामांश्च पूजितः। सर्वस्वेनापि तस्माद्धि पूजयेदतिथिं सदा।।
apūjito dahatyeṣa diśetkāmāṃśca pūjitaḥ| sarvasvenāpi tasmāddhi pūjayedatithiṃ sadā||
Sūta replied: The guest who is not worshipped or honoured blazes and burns. If he is honoured, he shall bestow every thing one desires. Hence, one should always honour a guest by spending everything that one possesses.

वानप्रस्थो गृहस्थश्च सतामभ्यागतो यथा। वालखिल्यो यतिश्चैव विज्ञेयो ह्यतिथिः सदा।।
vānaprastho gṛhasthaśca satāmabhyāgato yathā| vālakhilyo yatiścaiva vijñeyo hyatithiḥ sadā||
Sūta replied: To good people, whether he is a forest-hermit, or a householder, the guest is on a par with Vālakhilya always. A Sannyāsin should also be known as such.

अभ्यागतः पाकचारदतिथिः स्यादपावकः। अतिथेरतिथिः प्रोक्तः सो ऽतिथिर्योग उच्यते।।
abhyāgataḥ pākacāradatithiḥ syādapāvakaḥ| atitheratithiḥ proktaḥ so 'tithiryoga ucyate||
Sūta replied: A guest is called Abhyāgata because he has moved according to his own desire. An Atithi shall be without fire A guest is called Atithi because he has no particular day for his visit. This is said to be the etymological derivation of the word.

नाव्रती न च संकीर्णो नाविद्यो नाविशेषवित। न च संतानसंबद्धो न देवी नागसे ऽतिथिः।।
nāvratī na ca saṃkīrṇo nāvidyo nāviśeṣavit| na ca saṃtānasaṃbaddho na devī nāgase 'tithiḥ||
Sūta replied: The following persons cannot be received as Atithi (guests). A person who does not keep up views and observances of rites, a man of mixed caste, a person without learning, a person who does not possess specialised knowledge, a person who is tied to his children (?), a person who does not believe in the Devas and a sinner.

पिपासिताय श्रान्ताय भ्रान्तायातिबुभुक्षते। तस्मै सत्कृत्य दातव्यं यज्ञम्य फलमिच्छता।।
pipāsitāya śrāntāya bhrāntāyātibubhukṣate| tasmai satkṛtya dātavyaṃ yajñamya phalamicchatā||
Sūta replied: A guest who has already wandered a lot, who is thirsty, who is tired, and who is very hungry should be received hospitably and given food etc. by one who desires the benefit of a Yajña.

न वक्तव्यं सदा विप्र क्षुधिते नास्ति किञ्चन। तस्मै सत्कृत्य दातव्यं सदापचितिरेव सः।।
na vaktavyaṃ sadā vipra kṣudhite nāsti kiñcana| tasmai satkṛtya dātavyaṃ sadāpacitireva saḥ||
Sūta replied: To a hungry person the words “there is nothing” should never be uttered, O Brāhmaṇas. Every thing should be given to him after honouring him duly. He is a man worthy of being honoured always.

अक्लिष्ट मव्रणं युक्तं कृशवृत्तिमयाचकम। एकान्तशीलं धीमन्तं सदा श्राद्धेषु भोजयेत।।
akliṣṭa mavraṇaṃ yuktaṃ kṛśavṛttimayācakam| ekāntaśīlaṃ dhīmantaṃ sadā śrāddheṣu bhojayet||
Sūta replied: In Śrāddha rites one should always feed the fallowing types of persons:—A person who is not tormented or inconsistent, who has no wound, who practises Yoga, who has slender means of subsistence but who is not a regular beggar and an. intelligent person habituated to solitude.

नो ददामि तमित्येवं ब्रूयाद्यो वै दुरात्मवान। अपि जातिशतं गत्वा न स मुच्येत किल्बिषात।।
no dadāmi tamityevaṃ brūyādyo vai durātmavān| api jātiśataṃ gatvā na sa mucyeta kilbiṣāt||
Sūta replied: The wicked person who says “I will not give him” will never free himself from the sin even if he takes hundred births.

समोदं भोजयेद्विप्रानेकपङ्क्त्यां तु यो नरः। नियुक्तो ह्यनि युक्तो वा पङ्क्त्या हरति किल्बिषम।।
samodaṃ bhojayedviprānekapaṅktyāṃ tu yo naraḥ| niyukto hyani yukto vā paṅktyā harati kilbiṣam||
Sūta replied: (Partially defective text) A man who joyfully feeds Brāhmaṇas in a single row becomes free from sin whether the guests have been employed (i.e. invited) or not employed. Through that single row (of the fed Brāhmaṇas) he removes the sin (?) (If it is otherwise) he incurs sin immediately and all his good deeds such as Iṣṭāpūrta, perish.

पाप्मानं गृह्यते क्षिप्रमिष्टापूर्त्तं च नश्यति। यतिस्तु सर्वविप्राणां सर्वेषामग्रतो भवेत।।
pāpmānaṃ gṛhyate kṣipramiṣṭāpūrttaṃ ca naśyati| yatistu sarvaviprāṇāṃ sarveṣāmagrato bhavet||
Sūta replied: (Partially defective text) A man who joyfully feeds Brāhmaṇas in a single row becomes free from sin whether the guests have been employed (i.e. invited) or not employed. पञ्च वेदान्सेतिहासान्यः पठेद्द्विजसत्तमः। योगादनन्तरं सो ऽथ नियोक्तव्यो विजानता।।
pañca vedānsetihāsānyaḥ paṭheddvijasattamaḥ| yogādanantaraṃ so 'tha niyoktavyo vijānatā||
Sūta replied: The excellent Brāhmaṇa who studies the five sacred books viz. the Vedas and the Itihāsas should be seated after a person who is well-versed in Yoga, by the intelligent host.

त्रिवेदो ऽनन्तरं तस्य द्विवेदस्तदनन्तरम। एकवेदस्ततः पश्चादुपाध्यायस्ततः परम।।
trivedo 'nantaraṃ tasya dvivedastadanantaram| ekavedastataḥ paścādupādhyāyastataḥ param||
Sūta replied: A person who has studied three Vedas comes after him: a person of two Vedas be seated next; after that comes the man who has studied one Veda andUpādhyāya (ordinary priest) thereafter.

पावना ये ऽत्र संख्यातास्तान्प्रवक्ष्ये निबोधत। य एते पूर्वनिर्द्दिष्टाः सर्वे ते ह्यनुपूर्वशः।।
pāvanā ye 'tra saṃkhyātāstānpravakṣye nibodhata| ya ete pūrvanirddiṣṭāḥ sarve te hyanupūrvaśaḥ||
Sūta replied: I shall mention those persons who are considered sanctifying (the row of diners) in this connection. Understand. Those who are mentioned before have been mentioned in the proper order (of their importance).

षडङ्गविद्ध्यानयोगौ सर्वतत्रस्तथैव च। यायावरश्च पञ्चैते विज्ञेयाः पङ्क्तिपावनाः।।
ṣaḍaṅgaviddhyānayogau sarvatatrastathaiva ca| yāyāvaraśca pañcaite vijñeyāḥ paṅktipāvanāḥ||
Sūta replied: The following five persons should be understood as Paṅktipāvanas (those who sanctify the row of diners) viz. One who knows the six ancillary subjects or Aṅgas of Vedas, a person who meditates, a person who practises Yoga, Sarvatantra (one who has mastered all the systems of Philosophy) and Yāyāvara (a vagrant mendicant or saint).

श्राद्धकल्पे भवेद्यस्तु सन्निपत्य तु पावनः। चतुर्दशानां विद्यानामेकस्यामपि पारगाः।।
śrāddhakalpe bhavedyastu sannipatya tu pāvanaḥ| caturdaśānāṃ vidyānāmekasyāmapi pāragāḥ||
Sūta replied: He who is conversant with the Śrāddhakalpa sanctifies by his joining (the row of diners). One who has mastered at least one out of the fourteen Vidyās (Lores), those who duly fulfil their duties—all these sanctify the row. Undoubtedly the Sauparṇas, those who maintain five sacred fires, those who sing Sāman hymns, the Brāhmaṇa who duly undertakes the pilgrimage by walking for twelve years, Triṇācīketas, Traividya (a person who knows and has kindled three Naciketā fires and mastered three Vidyās), the Brāhmaṇa who learns works of piety, the Brāhmaṇa who has mastered the great scriptural text written by Bṛhaspati—all these are cited as sanctifiers of the rows.

bārhaspatye mahāśāstre yaśca pāraṅgato dvijaḥ| sarve te pāvanā viprāḥ paṅktīnāṃ samudātdṛtāḥ||
Sūta replied: He who is conversant with the Śrāddhakalpa sanctifies by his joining (the row of diners). One who has mastered at least one out of the fourteen Vidyās (Lores), those who duly fulfil their duties—all these sanctify the row. Undoubtedly the Sauparṇas, those who maintain five sacred fires, those who sing Sāman hymns, the Brāhmaṇa who duly undertakes the pilgrimage by walking for twelve years, Triṇācīketas, Traividya (a person who knows and has kindled three Naciketā fires and mastered three Vidyās), the Brāhmaṇa who learns works of piety, the Brāhmaṇa who has mastered the great scriptural text written by Bṛhaspati—all these are cited as sanctifiers of the rows.
