उपोद्धातपादे पितृकल्पो नाम नवमो ऽध्यायः।। 9।। सप्तैते जयतां श्रेष्ठाः स्वर्गे पितृगणाः स्मृताः। चत्वारो मुर्त्तिमन्तश्च त्रयस्तेषाममूर्त्तयः।।
upoddhātapāde pitṛkalpo nāma navamo 'dhyāyaḥ|| 9|| saptaite jayatāṃ śreṣṭhāḥ svarge pitṛgaṇāḥ smṛtāḥ| catvāro murttimantaśca trayasteṣāmamūrttayaḥ||
Bṛhaspati said: These seven groups of Pitṛs are considered ās the most excellent among victorious ones. Four of them have forms and three of them are Amūrtis ( formless ones).

तेषां लोकान्विसर्गं च कीर्त्तयिष्ये निबोधत। यावै दुहितरस्तेषां दौहित्राश्चेव ये स्मृताः।।
teṣāṃ lokānvisargaṃ ca kīrttayiṣye nibodhata| yāvai duhitarasteṣāṃ dauhitrāśceva ye smṛtāḥ||
Bṛhaspati said: Listen attentively. I shall tell their worlds as well as creation. I shall recount those who are their daughters and those who are regarded as their grandsons (daughters’ sons).

lokāḥ saṃtānakā nāma yatra tiṣṭhanti bhāsvarāḥ| amūrttayaḥ pitṛgaṇāste vai putrāḥ prajāpateḥ||
Bṛhaspati said: In those worlds named Santānakas the formless yet brilliant groups of Pitṛs abide. They are the sons of Prajāpati.

विराजस्य द्विजश्रेष्ठा वैराजा इति विश्रुताः। एते वै पितरस्तात योगानां योगवर्धनाः।।
virājasya dvijaśreṣṭhā vairājā iti viśrutāḥ| ete vai pitarastāta yogānāṃ yogavardhanāḥ||
Bṛhaspati said: They are the sons of Viraja the Prajāpati. Hence they are well known as Vairājas. They are excellent Brāhmaṇas. These are the Pitṛs, O dear one, who increase the yogic power of the yogins.

nyagrodhame kaparṇā tu pāṭhalaṃ tvekapāṭalā| āśite dve aparṇā tu hyaniketā tapo 'carat||
Bṛhaspati said: Two of them had places of shelter viz.—Ekaparṇā took shelter under a Nyagrodha tree and Ekapāṭalā under a Pāṭalā (trumpet-flower tree). Aparṇā was without any abode. They performed penance.

Bṛhaspati said: One of them (had performed penance) without taking food. Her mother who was pained on account of her motherly love forbade her (from performing penance) saying ‘U mā’ (O daughter do not).

Bṛhaspati said: The gentle lady Aparṇā who performed a penance very difficult to be performed (by others) on being addressed in that manner, became well known in the three worlds as Umā: She was extremely fortunate.

तथैव नाम्ना तेनासौ निरुक्तोक्तेन कर्मणा। एतत्तु त्रिकुमारीकं जगत्स्थावरजङ्ग मम।।
tathaiva nāmnā tenāsau niruktoktena karmaṇā| etattu trikumārīkaṃ jagatsthāvarajaṅga mam||
Bṛhaspati said: She became well known by that name on account of her activity expressed in the words of such a derivation. This world with its mobile and immobile living beings had such (splendid) triad of virgins.

एतासां तपसा सृष्टं यावद्भूमिर्द्धरिष्यति। तपःशरीरास्ताः सर्वास्थिस्रो योगबलान्विताः।।
etāsāṃ tapasā sṛṣṭaṃ yāvadbhūmirddhariṣyati| tapaḥśarīrāstāḥ sarvāsthisro yogabalānvitāḥ||
Bṛhaspati said: What had been created by the power of penance of these three virgins will hold good as long as the earth exists. All those three (virgins) were equipped with Yogic power. Penance sustained their physical bodies.

sarvāstāḥ sumahābhāgāḥ sarvāśca sthirayauvanāḥ| sarvāśca brahmavādinyaḥ sarvāścaivordhvaretasaḥ||
Bṛhaspati said: All of them had excellent and great fortune. All of them possessed permanent youth. All of them were expounders of the Brahman. All of them had sublimated their sexual urge and potentiality.

Bṛhaspati said: Ekapāṭalā who was the third among those virgins approached (and dedicated herself) to Jaigīṣavya the son of Śata-śalāka.

Bṛhaspati said: Śaṅkha and Likhita are remembered as his sons but not born of a womb. These were the greatly fortunate splendid daughters of the Himavān.

सर्वत्र गत एव त्वं न दोषो विद्यते तव। इत्येवमुक्ते तु तदा वह्निना च तथा कृतम।।
sarvatra gata eva tvaṃ na doṣo vidyate tava| ityevamukte tu tadā vahninā ca tathā kṛtam||
Bṛhaspati said: You go everywhere. (You are free to go anywhere). Hence, there can’t be any blame on you.” On being instructed thus, the instruction was duly carried out by the firegod.

उमां देवः समुत्सृज्य शुक्रं भूमौ व्यसर्जयत। ततो रुषितया सद्यः शप्तो ऽग्निरुमया तया।।
umāṃ devaḥ samutsṛjya śukraṃ bhūmau vyasarjayat| tato ruṣitayā sadyaḥ śapto 'gnirumayā tayā||
Bṛhaspati said: The lord left Umā and discharged the semen on the ground. Instantly, the firegod was cursed by the annoyed and infuriated Umā.

इदं चोक्तवती वह्निं रोषगद्गदया गिरा। यस्मान्नाववितृप्ताभ्यां रतिविघ्नं हुताशन।।
idaṃ coktavatī vahniṃ roṣagadgadayā girā| yasmānnāvavitṛptābhyāṃ rativighnaṃ hutāśana||
Bṛhaspati said: In words choked on account of anger she spoke (cursed) the fire-god thus—“O fire-god, even before we were satisfied, you brought about an interruption in our sexual intercourse. You have committed an act that should not have been committed. Hence, you are evil-minded. The extremely lustrous semen of Rudra that has come out thus, has become a foetus. You must carry the same within you. This is the punishment to you.”

Bṛhaspati said: In words choked on account of anger she spoke (cursed) the fire-god thus—“O fire-god, even before we were satisfied, you brought about an interruption in our sexual intercourse. You have committed an act that should not have been committed. Hence, you are evil-minded. The extremely lustrous semen of Rudra that has come out thus, has become a foetus. Bṛhaspati said: In words choked on account of anger she spoke (cursed) the fire-god thus—“O fire-god, even before we were satisfied, you brought about an interruption in our sexual intercourse. You have committed an act that should not have been committed. Hence, you are evil-minded. The extremely lustrous semen of Rudra that has come out thus, has become a foetus. You must carry the same within you. This is the punishment to you.”

सुमहान्परिखेदो मे जायते गर्भधारणात। मद्धितार्थ मथो गर्भमिमं धारय निम्नगे।।
sumahānparikhedo me jāyate garbhadhāraṇāt| maddhitārtha matho garbhamimaṃ dhāraya nimnage||
Bṛhaspati said: Very great distress is caused to ṃe as I have to carry the foetus within me. O river, hold this foetus for the sake of my relief and welfare. Due to my gracious favour, a son will be born to you. He will be a bestower of boons.”

prakṛṣṭaṃ vyasṛjadgarbhaṃ dīpyamāna mivānalam| rudrāgnigaṅgātanayastatra jāto 'ruṇaprabhaḥ||
Bṛhaspati said: Very great distress is caused to ṃe as I have to carry the foetus within me. O river, hold this foetus for the sake of my relief and welfare. Due to my gracious favour, a son will be born to you. He will be a bestower of boons.”

आदित्यशतसंकाशो महातेजाः प्रतापवान। तस्मिञ्जाते महाभागे कुमारे जाह्नवीसुते।।
ādityaśatasaṃkāśo mahātejāḥ pratāpavān| tasmiñjāte mahābhāge kumāre jāhnavīsute||
Bṛhaspati said: He was as brilliant as a hundred suns. He had great splendour and valour. When the son of Jāhnavī (Gaṅgā) the boy of great fortune was born, the firmament was covered (crowded) with aerial chariots as though with a number of birds. The celestial drums of sweet sound were beaten (sounded) in the sky.

विमानयानैराकाशं पतत्र्रिभिरिवावृतम। देवदुन्दुभयो नेदुराकाशे मधुरस्वनाः।।
vimānayānairākāśaṃ patatrribhirivāvṛtam| devadundubhayo nedurākāśe madhurasvanāḥ||
Bṛhaspati said: He was as brilliant as a hundred suns. He had great splendour and valour. When the son of Jāhnavī (Gaṅgā) the boy of great fortune was born, the firmament was covered (crowded) with aerial chariots as though with a number of birds. The celestial drums of sweet sound were beaten (sounded) in the sky.

मुमुचुः पुष्पवर्षं च खेचराः सिद्धचारणाः। जगुर्गन्धर्वमुख्याश्च सर्वशस्तत्र तत्र ह।।
mumucuḥ puṣpavarṣaṃ ca khecarāḥ siddhacāraṇāḥ| jagurgandharvamukhyāśca sarvaśastatra tatra ha||
Bṛhaspati said: The Siddhas and Cāraṇas moving about in the sky discharged showers of flowers. The Gandharva chieftains began to sing here and there (everywhere).

यक्षा विद्याधराः सिद्धाः किन्नराश्चैव सर्वशः। महानागसहस्राणि प्रवराश्च पतत्र्रिणः।।
yakṣā vidyādharāḥ siddhāḥ kinnarāścaiva sarvaśaḥ| mahānāgasahasrāṇi pravarāśca patatrriṇaḥ||
Bṛhaspati said: Yakṣas, Vidyādharas, Siddhas, Kinnaras, thousands of great serpents and the excellent birds approached with great reverence the highly fortunate son of Śaṅkara born through the fire-god. Daityas, Vānaras (monkeys) and Rākṣasas were struck by that miraculous force.

उपतस्थुर्महाभागमाग्नेयं शङ्करात्मजम। प्रभावेण हतास्तेन दैत्यवानरराक्षसाः।।
upatasthurmahābhāgamāgneyaṃ śaṅkarātmajam| prabhāveṇa hatāstena daityavānararākṣasāḥ||
Bṛhaspati said: Yakṣas, Vidyādharas, Siddhas, Kinnaras, thousands of great serpents and the excellent birds approached with great reverence the highly fortunate son of Śaṅkara born through the fire-god. Daityas, Vānaras (monkeys) and Rākṣasas were struck by that miraculous force.
