ऋषय ऊचु। देवानां दानवानां च दैत्यानां चैव सर्वशः। उत्पत्तिं विस्तरेणैव ग्रूहि वैवस्वतेंऽतरे।।
ṛṣaya ūcu| devānāṃ dānavānāṃ ca daityānāṃ caiva sarvaśaḥ| utpattiṃ vistareṇaiva grūhi vaivasvateṃ'tare||
The sages said:: “Narrate in detail the origin of all the Devas, Dānavas and Daityas in the Vaivasvata Manvantara.”

Sūta said:: “I shall narrate the progeny of Dharma himself. Listen to it and understand.

Sūta said:: “I shall narrate the progeny of Dharma himself. Listen to it and understand.

sādhyāputrāstu dharmasya sādhyā dvādaśajajñire| devebhyastānparāndevāndaivajñāḥ paricakṣate||
Sūta said:: Twelve Sādhyas were born as the sons of Sādhyā and Dharma. Those conversant with the Devas affirm that they are superior to other Devas.

ब्राह्मणा वै मुखात्सृष्टा जया देवाः प्रजेप्सया। सर्वे मन्त्रशरीरस्ते समृता मन्वन्तरेष्विह।।
brāhmaṇā vai mukhātsṛṣṭā jayā devāḥ prajepsayā| sarve mantraśarīraste samṛtā manvantareṣviha||
Sūta said:: These are the gods called Jaya, created from the mouth of Brahma with a desire for progeny. All are remembered as Devas with Mantras as their bodies, in all the Manvantaras.

दर्शश्च पौर्णमासश्च बृहद्यच्च रथन्तरम। वित्तिश्चैव विवित्तिश्च आकूतिः कूतिरेव च।।
darśaśca paurṇamāsaśca bṛhadyacca rathantaram| vittiścaiva vivittiśca ākūtiḥ kūtireva ca||
Sūta said:: The names of the (special) Yajñas of these (twelve Devas) are well-known viz. Darśa, Paurṇamāsa, Bṛhad Rathantara, Vitti Vivitti, Ākūti, Kūti, Vijñātṛ, Vijñāta and Yajña.

विज्ञाता चैव विज्ञातो मनो यज्ञस्तथैव च। नामान्येतानि तेषां वै यज्ञानां प्रथितानि च।।
vijñātā caiva vijñāto mano yajñastathaiva ca| nāmānyetāni teṣāṃ vai yajñānāṃ prathitāni ca||
Sūta said:: The names of the (special) Yajñas of these (twelve Devas) are well-known viz. Darśa, Paurṇamāsa, Bṛhad Rathantara, Vitti Vivitti, Ākūti, Kūti, Vijñātṛ, Vijñāta and Yajña.

ब्रह्मशापेन तेजाताः पुनः स्वायंभुवे जिताः। स्वारोचिषे वै तुषिताः सत्यश्चैवोत्तमे पुनः।।
brahmaśāpena tejātāḥ punaḥ svāyaṃbhuve jitāḥ| svārociṣe vai tuṣitāḥ satyaścaivottame punaḥ||
Sūta said:: Due to the curse of Brahmā, those were born as Jitas in the Svāyambhuva Manvantara, as Tuṣitas in the Svārociṣa, as Satyas in the Uttama, as Devas named Haris in Tāmasa Manvantara and as Vaikuṇṭhas in the Raivata Manvantara. In the Cākṣuṣa Manvantara, they were born as the Devas named Sādhyas out of their own will.

तामसे हरयो नाम वैकुण्ठा रेवतान्तरे। ते साध्याश्चाक्षुषे नाम्ना छन्दजा जज्ञिरे सुराः।।
tāmase harayo nāma vaikuṇṭhā revatāntare| te sādhyāścākṣuṣe nāmnā chandajā jajñire surāḥ||
Sūta said:: Due to the curse of Brahmā, those were born as Jitas in the Svāyambhuva Manvantara, as Tuṣitas in the Svārociṣa, as Satyas in the Uttama, as Devas named Haris in Tāmasa Manvantara and as Vaikuṇṭhas in the Raivata Manvantara. dharmaputrā mahābhāgāḥ sādhyā ye dvādaśāmarāḥ| pūrvaṃ samanusūyante cākṣuṣasyāntare manoḥ||
Sūta said:: The twelve Devas of great dignity and splendour, sons of Dharma and named Sādhyas, were to have been born in the Cākṣuṣa Manvantara. In the Svārociṣa Manvantara, they were the Devas of great prowess named Tuṣitas. They spoke to one another—“when there is a little balance of Cākṣuṣa Manvantara (?) (rather Svārociṣa?), we shall enter this lady of noble dignity (of the) Sādhyā herself and shall be born in the (Cākṣuṣa) Manvantara. That will be conducive to our excellence (and beatitude) After saying thus, those twelve Devas were born of (Sādhyā) and Dharma, the descendant of the seīf-born lord.

svārociṣeṃ'tare 'tītā devā ye vai mahaujasaḥ| tuṣitā nāma te 'nyonyamūcurvai cākṣuṣeṃ'tare||
Sūta said:: The twelve Devas of great dignity and splendour, sons of Dharma and named Sādhyas, were to have been born in the Cākṣuṣa Manvantara. In the Svārociṣa Manvantara, they were the Devas of great prowess named Tuṣitas. They spoke to one another—“when there is a little balance of Cākṣuṣa Manvantara (?) (rather Svārociṣa?), we shall enter this lady of noble dignity (of the) Sādhyā herself and shall be born in the (Cākṣuṣa) Manvantara. Sūta said:: The twelve Devas of great dignity and splendour, sons of Dharma and named Sādhyas, were to have been born in the Cākṣuṣa Manvantara. In the Svārociṣa Manvantara, they were the Devas of great prowess named Tuṣitas. They spoke to one another—“when there is a little balance of Cākṣuṣa Manvantara (?) Sūta said:: The twelve Devas of great dignity and splendour, sons of Dharma and named Sādhyas, were to have been born in the Cākṣuṣa Manvantara. In the Svārociṣa Manvantara, they were the Devas of great prowess named Tuṣitas. They spoke to one another—“when there is a little balance of Cākṣuṣa Manvantara (?) विपश्चिदिन्द्रो यश्चाभूत्तथा सत्यो हरिश्च तौ। स्वारोचिषेंऽतरे पूर्वमास्तां तौ तुषितासुतौ।।
vipaścidindro yaścābhūttathā satyo hariśca tau| svārociṣeṃ'tare pūrvamāstāṃ tau tuṣitāsutau||
Sūta said:: They had originally been Vipaścit and Indra, as well as Satya and Hari. Formerly, in the Svārociṣa Manvantara, they were the sons of Tuṣitā.

तुषितानां तु साध्यात्वे नामान्येतानि चक्षते। मनो ऽनुमन्ता प्राणश्च नरो ऽपानश्च वीर्यवान।।
tuṣitānāṃ tu sādhyātve nāmānyetāni cakṣate| mano 'numantā prāṇaśca naro 'pānaśca vīryavān||
Sūta said:: These names are mentioned when Tuṣitas had become Sādhyas viz. Mana, Anumantṛ, Prāṇa, Nara, Apāna of great virility, Viti, Naya, Haya, Haṃsa, Nārāyaṇa, Vibhu and Prabhu. Thus twelve Sādhyas were born.

वितिर्नयो हयश्चैव हंसो नारायणस्तथा। विभुश्चापि प्रभुश्चापि साध्या द्वादश जज्ञिरे।।
vitirnayo hayaścaiva haṃso nārāyaṇastathā| vibhuścāpi prabhuścāpi sādhyā dvādaśa jajñire||
Sūta said:: These names are mentioned when Tuṣitas had become Sādhyas viz. Mana, Anumantṛ, Prāṇa, Nara, Apāna of great virility, Viti, Naya, Haya, Haṃsa, Nārāyaṇa, Vibhu and Prabhu. Thus twelve Sādhyas were born.

svāyaṃbhuvaiṃ'tare pūrvaṃ tataḥ svāro ciṣe punaḥ| nāmānyāsanpunastāni tuṣitānāṃ nibodhata||
Sūta said:: This had been in the Svāyambhuva Manvantara (?) formerly. Again in the Svārociṣa Manvantara the following were the names of the Tuṣitas. Understand them.

प्राणापानावुदानश्च समानो व्यान एव च। चक्षुः श्रोत्रं रसो घ्राणं स्पर्शो बुद्धिर्मनस्तथा।।
prāṇāpānāvudānaśca samāno vyāna eva ca| cakṣuḥ śrotraṃ raso ghrāṇaṃ sparśo buddhirmanastathā||
Sūta said:: Prāṇa, Apāna, Udāna, Samāna, Vyāna, Cakṣus, Śrotram, Rasa, Ghrāṇa, Sparśa, Buddhi and Manas.

नामान्येतानि वै पूर्वं तुषितानां स्मृतानि च। वसोस्तु वसवः पुत्राः साध्यानामनुजाः स्मृताः।।
nāmānyetāni vai pūrvaṃ tuṣitānāṃ smṛtāni ca| vasostu vasavaḥ putrāḥ sādhyānāmanujāḥ smṛtāḥ||
Sūta said:: These former names of the Tuṣitas are remembered. The Vasus were the sons of Vasu. They are remembered as the younger brothers of the Sādhyas. The following are glorified as the eight Vasus yiz. Dhara, Dhruva, Soma, Āyus, Anala, Anila, Pratyūṣa and Prabhāsa.

धरो ध्रुवश्च सोमश्च आयुश्चैवानलो ऽनिलः। प्रत्यूषश्च प्रभासश्च वसवो ऽष्टौ प्रकीर्तिताः।।
dharo dhruvaśca somaśca āyuścaivānalo 'nilaḥ| pratyūṣaśca prabhāsaśca vasavo 'ṣṭau prakīrtitāḥ||
Sūta said:: These former names of the Tuṣitas are remembered. The Vasus were the sons of Vasu. They are remembered as the younger brothers of the Sādhyas. The following are glorified as the eight Vasus yiz. Dhara, Dhruva, Soma, Āyus, Anala, Anila, Pratyūṣa and Prabhāsa.

धरस्य पुत्रो द्रविणो हुतहव्यो रजस तथा। ध्रुवपुत्रो ऽभवत्तात कालो लोकाप्रकालनः।।
dharasya putro draviṇo hutahavyo rajas tathā| dhruvaputro 'bhavattāta kālo lokāprakālanaḥ||
Sūta said:: The sons of Dhara were Draviṇa, Hutahavya and Rajas. O dear one, the son of Dhruva was Kāla who impels the worlds. (Lokaprakālana).

सोमस्य भगवान्वर्चा बुधश्च ग्रहबौधनः। धरोर्मी कलिलश्चैव पञ्च चन्द्रमसः सुताः।।
somasya bhagavānvarcā budhaśca grahabaudhanaḥ| dharormī kalilaścaiva pañca candramasaḥ sutāḥ||
Sūta said:: The five sons of Soma (the Moon) were lord Varcas, Budha, Graha Bodhana, Dharormin and Kalila.

आयस्य पुत्रो वैतण्ड्यः शमः शान्तस्तथैव च। स्कन्दः सनत्कुमारश्च जज्ञे पादेन तेजसः।।
āyasya putro vaitaṇḍyaḥ śamaḥ śāntastathaiva ca| skandaḥ sanatkumāraśca jajñe pādena tejasaḥ||
Sūta said:: The sons of Āya (i.e. Āyus) were Vaitaṇḍya, Śama, Śānta, Skanda and Sanatkumāra who were born, due to a quarter of his brilliance.

अग्नेः पुत्रं कुमारं तु स्वाहा जज्ञे श्रिया षृतम। तस्य शाखो विशाखश्च नैगमेयश्च प्रष्टजाः।।
agneḥ putraṃ kumāraṃ tu svāhā jajñe śriyā ṣṛtam| tasya śākho viśākhaśca naigameyaśca praṣṭajāḥ||
Sūta said:: The sons of Āya (i.e. Āyus) were Vaitaṇḍya, Śama, Śānta, Skanda and Sanatkumāra who were born, due to a quarter of his brilliance.

अनिलस्य शिवा भार्या तस्याः पुत्रो मनोजवः। अविज्ञान गतिश्चैव द्वौ पुत्रावनिलस्य च।।
anilasya śivā bhāryā tasyāḥ putro manojavaḥ| avijñāna gatiścaiva dvau putrāvanilasya ca||
Sūta said:: Śivā was the wife of Anila. Her sons were Manojana and Avijñātagati. Anila had two sons (only).

प्रत्यूषस्य विदुः पुत्रमृषिं नाम्नाथ देवलम। द्वौ पुत्रौ देवलस्यापि क्षमावन्तौ मनीषिणौ।।
pratyūṣasya viduḥ putramṛṣiṃ nāmnātha devalam| dvau putrau devalasyāpi kṣamāvantau manīṣiṇau||
Sūta said:: They know that the son of Pratyūṣa was the sage named Devala. Devala had two sons who were forbearing and intelligent.

बृहस्पतेश्तु भगिनी भुवना ब्रह्मवादिनी। योगसिद्धा जगत्कृत्स्नमशक्ता चरति स्म ह।।
bṛhaspateśtu bhaginī bhuvanā brahmavādinī| yogasiddhā jagatkṛtsnamaśaktā carati sma ha||
Sūta said:: The sister of Bṛhaspati was Bhuvanā, the expounder of Brahman, She had achieved yogic power. She was never attached to the world, but she traversed the entire universe.

प्रभासस्य तु भार्या सा वसूनामष्टमस्य ह। विश्वकर्मा सुतस्तस्याः प्रजापतिपतिर्विभुः।।
prabhāsasya tu bhāryā sā vasūnāmaṣṭamasya ha| viśvakarmā sutastasyāḥ prajāpatipatirvibhuḥ||
Sūta said:: She who was the wife of Prabhāsa the eighth one of the Vasus and Viśvakarman, the lord and master of all Prajāpatis, as her son.

विश्वेदेवास्तु विश्वाया जज्ञिरे दश विश्रुताः। क्रतुर्दक्षः श्रवः सत्यः कालः मुनिस्तथा।।
viśvedevāstu viśvāyā jajñire daśa viśrutāḥ| kraturdakṣaḥ śravaḥ satyaḥ kālaḥ munistathā||
Sūta said:: The ten famous Viśvedevas were born of Viśvā (i.e. the wife of Dharma). They were Kratu, Dakṣa, Satya, Kāla, Kāma, Muni, Purūravas, Mārdravasa and Rocamāna.

पुरूरवो मार्द्रवसो रोचमानश्च ते दश। धर्मपुत्राः सुरा एते विश्वायां जज्ञिरे शुभाः।।
purūravo mārdravaso rocamānaśca te daśa| dharmaputrāḥ surā ete viśvāyāṃ jajñire śubhāḥ||
Sūta said:: The ten famous Viśvedevas were born of Viśvā (i.e. the wife of Dharma). They were Kratu, Dakṣa, Satya, Kāla, Kāma, Muni, Purūravas, Mārdravasa and Rocamāna.

मरुत्वत्यां मरुत्वन्तो भानवो भानुजाः स्मृताः। मुहूर्ताश्च मुहूर्ताया घोषलंबा ह्यजायत।।
marutvatyāṃ marutvanto bhānavo bhānujāḥ smṛtāḥ| muhūrtāśca muhūrtāyā ghoṣalaṃbā hyajāyata||
Sūta said:: It is remembered that the Marutvants were born of Marutvatī; The Bhānus were born of Bhānu (wife of Dharma); the Muhūrtas were born of Muhūrtā and Lambā gave birth to Ghoṣa.

संकल्पायां तु संजज्ञे विद्वान्संकल्प एव तु। नव वीथ्यस्तु जामायाः पथत्रयमुपाश्रिताः।।

They say these things after observing the Sattva (inherent strength), Kāla (time), Deśa (place), Kārya (effect) and Karman (activity).

Sūta said:: They see diversity because they say, “This is different. This is not” (the same) in their overeagerness and excitement. They are demons and spirits in particular. There is no difference (?)
