The Supreme Lord said: I will describe the characteristics of yoga, which is associated with the seed, O prince; by which the mind, through proper means, becomes serene and follows the righteous path.

In a clean place, establishing a seat, one should sit firmly in that seat; in that, the one with a straight body should practice.

One should purify the path of life with the practice of pranayama and meditation. The mind should be made steady and unshakable, even in adverse conditions.

The mind of a yogi, who has conquered breath, becomes pure in a short time. Just as iron, when heated by fire and air, sheds its impurities.

प्राणायामैर्दहेद्दोषान् धारणाभिश्च किल्बिषान्। प्रत्याहारेण संसर्गान् ध्यानेनानीश्वरान् गुणान्
Through pranayama, one can burn away impurities, and through dharana, one can eliminate sins. By practicing pratyahara, one can detach from attachments, and through meditation, one can attain divine qualities.

When the mind is purified and well-focused through yoga, one should meditate on the Lord, observing the tip of the nose.

He who has a face like a lotus, with eyes like the red of a lotus bud, dark as a blue lotus, and holds a conch, discus, and mace.

One should meditate on the complete form of the Lord, whose glories are sung, and who grants the merit of holy names, until the mind does not waver.

तस्मिन् लब्धपदं चित्तं सर्वावयवसंस्थितम्। विलक्ष्यैकत्र संयुज्यादङ्गे भगवतो मुनिः
In that state, the mind, having attained its goal, becomes united with the Lord, who is distinguished and resides in all parts.

सञ्चिन्तयेद्भगवतश्चरणारविन्दं वज्राङ्कुशध्वजसरोरुहलाञ्छनाढ्यम्। उत्तुङ्गरक्तविलसन्नखचक्रवाल- ज्योत्स्नाभिराहतमहद्धृदयान्धकारम्
One should contemplate the lotus feet of the Lord, adorned with the thunderbolt, goad, and flag, which dispel the darkness of the heart with their radiant nails.

यच्छौचनिःसृतसरित्प्रवरोदकेन तीर्थेन मूर्ध्न्यधिकृतेन शिवः शिवोऽभूत्। ध्यातुर्मनःशमलशैलनिसृष्टवज्रं ध्यायेच्चिरं भगवतश्चरणारविन्दम्
By that holy river, which flows from the mountain of peace, Lord Shiva became auspicious. One should meditate for a long time on the lotus feet of the Lord.

जानुद्वयं जलजलोचनया जनन्या लक्ष्म्याखिलस्य सुरवन्दितया विधातुः। ऊर्वोर्निधाय करपल्लवरोचिषा यत् संलालितं हृदि विभोरभवस्य कुर्यात्
With both knees resting on the ground, and with the eyes of the mother Lakshmi, who is worshipped by all the gods, one should place the tender shoots of the hands in the heart of the Supreme Being.

The thighs of the divine swans are adorned with the beauty of the golden flowers; the yellow garments are draped over the waist, resembling the brilliance of the Kanchika garland.

In the navel of the universe, where the lotus of all beings is situated, may one meditate on the two forms of the divine, which are radiant like the moon and the sun.

The chest of the great being, adorned with the essence of the mind, brings satisfaction to all; the throat is embellished with the Kaustubha gem, honoring all the worlds.

With the movement of the Mandara mountain, may one contemplate the powerful guardians of the worlds; may one reflect on the conch that is like the swan of the celestial lake.

One should remember the beloved of the Lord, who is smeared with the blood of the divine warriors; adorned with a garland of honey, may the essence of the temple be pure around the neck.

One should meditate upon the lotus face of the Lord, who is merciful to His devotees, and who is adorned with the beautiful form that shines with the brilliance of His ear ornaments, and whose noble nose is enhanced by the splendor of His cheeks.

यच्छ्रीनिकेतमलिभिः परिसेव्यमानं भूत्या स्वया कुटिलकुन्तलवृन्दजुष्टम्। मीनद्वयाश्रयमधिक्षिपदब्जनेत्रं ध्यायेन्मनोमयमतन्द्रित उल्लसद्भ्रु
One should meditate on the Lord, who is served by the pure-hearted, adorned with curly locks, and who has the eyes like lotus petals, and who is the refuge of the two fish.

By gazing upon Him with great compassion, He alleviates the threefold miseries of existence; one should meditate on His broad, benevolent smile, which is filled with abundant grace.

The smile of Lord Hari, which removes the intense sorrow of all beings, is crafted to enchant; it is the form of His divine illusion, created for the sage who worships the Lord with a fish flag.

One should meditate on the smiling form of Lord Vishnu, who is seated in the heart, with a face radiant like the red hibiscus, and whose mind is devoted to Him with deep love.

एवं हरौ भगवति प्रतिलब्धभावो भक्त्या द्रवद्धृदय उत्पुलकः प्रमोदात्। औत्कण्ठ्यबाष्पकलया मुहुरर्द्यमान- स्तच्चापि चित्तबडिशं शनकैर्वियुङ्क्ते
Thus, having attained the state of devotion to the Lord, the heart, filled with joy, becomes ecstatic. With tears of longing, it repeatedly expresses its emotions; and even then, the mind gradually detaches from the great attachment.

मुक्ताश्रयं यर्हि निर्विषयं विरक्तं निर्वाणमृच्छति मनः सहसा यथार्चिः। आत्मानमत्र पुरुषोऽव्यवधानमेक- मन्वीक्षते प्रतिनिवृत्तगुणप्रवाहः
When the mind, free from desires and detached, suddenly attains liberation, it perceives the self as the ultimate reality, focusing solely on it without distraction, flowing back into the essence of its qualities.

सोऽप्येतया चरमया मनसो निवृत्त्या तस्मिन्महिम्न्यवसितः सुखदुःखबाह्ये। हेतुत्वमप्यसति कर्तरि दुःखयोर्यत् स्वात्मन् विधत्त उपलब्धपरात्मकाष्ठः
By this ultimate detachment of the mind, one who is established in that greatness experiences both happiness and sorrow externally. Even the cause of suffering exists in the doer; yet, the self remains unaffected, abiding in the ultimate state.

देहं च तं न चरमः स्थितमुत्थितं वा सिद्धो विपश्यति यतोऽध्यगमत्स्वरूपम्। दैवादुपेतमथ दैववशादपेतं वासो यथा परिकृतं मदिरामदान्धः
The body, whether in a state of stability or upliftment, is perceived by the enlightened one as the essence of the Supreme. Whether influenced by divine grace or devoid of it, the body is like a drunken person, wrapped in illusions.

देहोऽपि दैववशगः खलु कर्म यावत् स्वारम्भकं प्रतिसमीक्षत एव सासुः। तं स प्रपञ्चमधिरूढसमाधियोगः स्वाप्नं पुनर्न भजते प्रतिबुद्धवस्तुः
The body is indeed subject to divine influence; as long as one examines their actions, they remain entangled in the web of existence. The one who is established in meditation does not regard dreams as real, once they awaken to the truth.

यथा पुत्राच्च वित्ताच्च पृथङ्मर्त्यः प्रतीयते। अप्यात्मत्वेनाभिमताद्देहादेः पुरुषस्तथा
Just as a mortal is perceived differently by a son and by wealth, so too is a person perceived differently by the body, according to the understanding of the self.

यथोल्मुकाद्विस्फुलिङ्गाद्धूमाद्वापि स्वसम्भवात्। अप्यात्मत्वेनाभिमताद्यथाग्निः पृथगुल्मुकात्
Just as smoke arises from fire or from a spark, and is perceived as separate from fire, so too is the self understood as distinct from the body.

भूतेन्द्रियान्तःकरणात्प्रधानाज्जीवस.न्ज्ञितात्। आत्मा तथा पृथग् द्रष्टा भगवान् ब्रह्मस.न्ज्ञितः
The soul, which is the seer, is distinct from the senses and the mind, and is known as the supreme consciousness.

सर्वभूतेषु चात्मानं सर्वभूतानि चात्मनि। ईक्षेतानन्यभावेन भूतेष्विव तदात्मताम्
One should see the self in all beings and all beings in the self, with an undivided perspective, just as the self is present in all living entities.

स्वयोनिषु यथा ज्योतिरेकं नाना प्रतीयते। योनीनां गुणवैषम्यात्तथाऽऽत्मा प्रकृतौ स्थितः
Just as a single light is perceived in many forms from various sources, the self remains situated in nature, manifesting the qualities of different wombs.

तस्मादिमां स्वां प्रकृतिं दैवीं सदसदात्मिकाम्। दुर्विभाव्यां पराभाव्य स्वरूपेणावतिष्ठते
Therefore, this divine nature of mine, which is both existence and non-existence, stands in its essence, incomprehensible.
