तेऽवदन् प्रथ॒मा ब्र॑ह्मकिल्बि॒षेऽकू॑पारः सलि॒लो मा॑त॒रिश्वा॑ । वी॒डुह॑रा॒स्तप॑ उ॒ग्रं म॑यो॒भूरापो॑ दे॒वीः प्र॑थम॒जा ऋ॒तस्य॑ ॥१॥
te ’vadan prathamā brahma-kilbiṣe ’kūpāraḥ salilo Mātariśvā. vīḍuharās tapa ugraṃ mayobhūr āpo devīḥ prathamajā ṛtasya
They said first: in Brahman’s sin, the bottomless, the watery, Mātariśvan. The treasure-bringers, the fierce heat, the joy-bringing, the divine Waters, first-born of Ṛta.

सोमो॒ राजा॑ प्रथ॒मो ब्र॑ह्मजा॒यां पुनः॒ प्राय॑च्छ॒दहृ॑णीयमानः । अ॒न्व॒र्ति॒ता वरु॑णो मि॒त्र आ॑सीद॒ग्निर्होता॑ हस्त॒गृह्या नि॑नाय ॥२॥
Somo rājā prathamo brahma-jāyāṃ punaḥ prāyacchad ahṛṇīyamānaḥ. anvartitā Varuṇo Mitra āsīd Agnir hotā hasta-gṛhyā nināya
King Soma first returned the Brahman-bride unharmed. Varuṇa and Mitra followed; Agni, as Hotṛ, led her holding by the hand.

हस्ते॑नै॒व ग्रा॒ह्यऽआ॒धिर॑स्या ब्रह्मजा॒येति॒ चेदवो॑चत्। न दू॒ताय॑ प्र॒हेया॑ तस्थ ए॒षा तथा॑ रा॒ष्ट्रं गु॑पि॒तं क्ष॒त्रिय॑स्य ॥३॥
hastenaiva grāhyā ādhirasya brahmajāyeti ced avocat na dūtāya praheyā tastha eṣā tathā rāṣṭraṃ gupitaṃ kṣatriyasya
It is to be taken only by the hand—so was it said—“she is the Brahma-wife.” She is not to be sent by a messenger; thus is the realm safeguarded for the Kṣatriya.

यामा॒हुस्तार॑कै॒षा वि॑के॒शीति॑ दु॒च्छुनां॒ ग्राम॑मव॒पद्य॑मानाम्। सा ब्र॑ह्मजा॒या वि दु॑नोति रा॒ष्ट्रं यत्र॒ प्रापा॑दि श॒श उ॑ल्कु॒षीमा॑न्॥४॥
yām āhus tārakaiṣā vikeśīti ducchunāṃ grāmam avapadyamānām sā brahmajāyā vi dunoti rāṣṭraṃ yatra prāpādi śaśa ulkuṣīmān
They call her starry, disheveled—straying into the villages of the ill-omened. That Brahma-wife destroys the realm where the hare-like, ulkushī-man reached.

ब्र॒ह्म॒चा॒री च॑रति॒ वेवि॑ष॒द् विषः॒ स दे॒वानां॑ भव॒त्येक॒मङ्ग॑म्। तेन॑ जा॒या मन्व॑विन्द॒द् बृह॒स्पतिः॒ सोमे॑न नी॒तां जु॒ह्वं१ न दे॑वाः ॥५॥
brahmacārī carati veviṣad viṣaḥ sa devānāṃ bhavaty ekam aṅgam tena jāyā manvavindad bṛhaspatiḥ somena nītāṃ juhvaṃ na devāḥ
A brahmacārin moves, wary of poison; he becomes a single limb of the gods. With him Bṛhaspati found the wife; led by Soma, the gods did not sacrifice the ladle.

दे॒वा वा ए॒तस्या॑मवदन्त॒ पूर्वे॑ सप्तऋ॒षय॒स्तप॑सा॒ ये नि॑षे॒दुः । भी॒मा जा॒या ब्रा॑ह्म॒णस्याप॑नीता दु॒र्धां द॑धाति पर॒मेव्योऽमन्॥६॥
devā vā etasyām avadanta pūrve sapta ṛṣayaḥ tapasā ye niṣeduḥ bhīmā jājā brāhmaṇasyāpanītā durdhāṃ dadhāti paramevyo aman
Of her, indeed, the former gods spoke—the seven Ṛṣis of old who sat in tapas: the Brahma-wife, fearsome when taken away from the Brāhmaṇa, lays a hard doom; they became highest lords.

ये गर्भा॑ अव॒पद्य॑न्ते॒ जग॒द् यच्चा॑पलु॒प्यते॑ । वी॒रा ये तृ॒ह्यन्ते॑ मि॒थो ब्र॑ह्मजा॒या हि॑नस्ति॒ तान्॥७॥
ye garbhā avapadyante jagad yaccāpalupyate vīrā ye tṛhyante mitho brahmajāyā hinasti tān
Pregnancies that are cast off, what moves and is destroyed, heroes who fall one by one—Brahma-wife strikes them down.

uta yat patayo daśa striyāḥ pūrve abbrāhmaṇāḥ | brahmā ced dhastam agrahīt sa eva patir ekadhā
Even if a woman had ten former husbands who were not brāhmaṇas, if a brāhmaṇa should take her hand, he alone is her one husband.

ब्रा॒ह्म॒ण ए॒व पति॒र्न रा॑ज॒न्यो॒३ न वैश्यः॑ । तत् सूर्यः॑ प्रब्रु॒वन्ने॑ति प॒ञ्चभ्यो॑ मान॒वेभ्यः॑ ॥९॥
brāhmaṇa eva patir na rājanyaḥ na vaiśyaḥ | tat sūryaḥ prabruvan neti pañcabhyo mānavebhyaḥ
The husband is a brāhmaṇa—never a rājan-ya nor a vaiśya. Thus spoke Sūrya to the five classes of men, saying, “Not so.”

punar vai devā adaduḥ punar manuṣyā adaduḥ | rājānaḥ satyaṃ gṛhnānā brahmajāyāṃ punar daduḥ
Again the gods gave; again men gave. Kings, holding to truth, returned the brāhmaṇa’s wife.

पु॒न॒र्दाय॑ ब्रह्मजा॒यां कृ॒त्वा दे॒वैर्नि॑किल्बि॒षम्। ऊर्जं॑ पृथि॒व्या भ॒क्त्वोरु॑गा॒यमुपा॑सते ॥११॥
punardāya brahmajāyāṃ kṛtvā devair nikilbiṣam | ūrjaṃ pṛthivyā bhaktvorugāyam upāsate
By restoring the brāhmaṇa’s wife, they became free of sin through the gods; having enjoyed the earth’s nourishment, they worship the far-famed.

नास्य॑ जा॒या श॑तवा॒ही क॑ल्या॒णी तल्प॒मा श॑ये । यस्मि॑न् रा॒ष्ट्रे नि॑रु॒ध्यते॑ ब्रह्मजा॒याचि॑त्त्या ॥१२॥
nāsya jāyā śatavāhī kalyāṇī talpam ā śaye | yasmin rāṣṭre nirudhyate brahmajāyācittyā
In that realm where the brāhmaṇa’s wife is restrained by disregard, his wife shall not be a hundredfold-prosperous, fair, nor lie upon the couch.

na vikarṇaḥ pṛthuśirās tasmin veśmani jāyate | yasmin rāṣṭre nirudhyate brahmajāyācittyā
No man with deformed ears or a broad head is born in that household where the nation is restrained by a Brahmajāyā-citti sacrifice.

nāsya kṣattā niṣkagrīvaḥ sūnānām ety agrataḥ | yasmin rāṣṭre nirudhyate brahmajāyācittyā
No neckless, collar-bone-less guard comes foremost among the sons in that nation restrained by a Brahmajāyā-citti sacrifice.

nāsya śvetaḥ kṛṣṇakarṇo dhuri yukto mahīyate | yasmin rāṣṭre nirudhyate brahmajāyācittyā
No white ox with black ears, yoked to the yoke, is honored there, in that nation restrained by a Brahmajāyā-citti sacrifice.

nāsya kṣetre puṣkariṇī nāṇḍīkaṃ jāyate bisam | yasmin rāṣṭre nirudhyate brahmajāyācittyā
No lotus-pond nor lotus-fibre grows in his field in that nation restrained by a Brahmajāyā-citti sacrifice.

Those who attend to her milking do not milk the dappled one for him, in that nation restrained by a Brahmajāyā-citti sacrifice.

नास्य॑ धे॒नुः क॑ल्या॒णी नान॒ड्वान्त्स॑हते॒ धुर॑म्। विजा॑नि॒र्यत्र॑ ब्रह्म॒णो रात्रिं॒ वस॑ति पा॒पया॑ ॥१८॥
nāsya dhenuḥ kalyāṇī nānaḍvānt sahate dhuram vijānir yatra brahmaṇo rātriṃ vasati pāpayā
His cow is not auspicious, nor does his ox endure the yoke—the one in whose house the night of Brahmaṇa’s sin dwells is known.
