८ त्रिपान्महाबृहती, विराण्नाम त्रिपाद्गायत्री। बृ॒हन्ने॑षामधिष्ठा॒ता अ॑न्ति॒कादि॑व पश्यति । य स्ता॑यन्मन्य॑ते॒ चर॒न्त्सर्वं॑ दे॒वा इ॒दं वि॑दुः ॥१॥
tripān mahābṛhatī virāṇnāmā tripād gāyatrī bṛhann eṣām adhiṣṭhātā antikād iva paśyati ya stāyan manyate caran sarvaṃ devā idaṃ viduḥ
The triple-footed Mahābṛhatī, called Virāṭ, and the triple-footed Gāyatrī—great is the lord who upholds them; he sees as if from close at hand. Whoever thinks to hide while moving—this all the gods know.

यस्तिष्ठ॑ति॒ चर॑ति॒ यश्च॒ वञ्च॑ति॒ यो नि॒लायं॒ चर॑ति॒ यः प्र॒तङ्क॑म्। द्वौ सं॑नि॒षद्य॒ यन्म॒न्त्रये॑ते॒ राजा॒ तद् वे॑द॒ वरु॑णस्तृ॒तीयः॑ ॥२॥
yas tiṣṭhati carati yaś ca vañcati yo nilāyaṃ carati yaḥ prataṅkam dvau saṃniṣadya yan mantrayete rājā tad veda Varuṇaḥ tṛtīyaḥ
Whether one stands, walks, deceives, slips in hiding, or prowls by stealth—when two sit together and plot, the king Varuṇa knows it; he is the third.

उ॒तेयं भूमि॒र्वरु॑णस्य॒ राज्ञ॑ उ॒तासौ द्यौर्बृ॑ह॒ती दू॒रेअ॑न्ता । उ॒तो स॑मु॒द्रौ वरु॑णस्य कु॒क्षी उ॒तास्मिन्नल्प॑ उद॒के निली॑नः ॥३॥
uteyaṃ bhūmir Varuṇasya rājña utāsau dyaur bṛhatī dūre-antā uto samudrau Varuṇasya kukṣī utāsminn alpa udake nilīnaḥ
This earth is under king Varuṇa; and that far-reaching heaven as well. The two oceans are Varuṇa’s wombs, and even in this small water he is hidden.

उत यो द्याम॑ति॒सर्पा॑त् प॒रस्ता॒न्न स मु॑च्यातै॒ वरु॑णस्य॒ राज्ञः॑ । दि॒व स्पशः॒ प्र च॑रन्ती॒दम॑स्य सहस्रा॒क्षा अति॑ पश्यन्ति॒ भूमि॑म्॥४॥
uta yo dyām atisarpāt parastān na sa mucyatai Varuṇasya rājñaḥ divaspaśaḥ pracaranti idam asya sahasrākṣā ati paśyanti bhūmim
Even one who slips past beyond the sky is not freed from king Varuṇa. His skyward spies move about; the thousand-eyed see the earth in its entirety.

सर्वं॒ तद् राजा॒ वरु॑णो॒ वि च॑ष्टे॒ यद॑न्त॒रा रोद॑सी॒ यत् प॒रस्ता॑त्। संख्या॑ता अस्य नि॒मिषो॒ जना॑नाम॒क्षानि॑व श्व॒घ्नी नि मि॑नोति॒ तानि॑ ॥५॥
Sarvaṃ tad rājā Varuṇo vi caṣṭe yad antarā rodasī yat parastāt. Saṅkhyātā asya nimiṣo janānām akṣāṇiva śvaghnī ni minoti tāni.
King Varuṇa beholds all that lies between heaven and earth and beyond. He has counted the blinkings of people; like a thrower of the noose he draws them tight—those eyes.

ये ते॒ पाशा॑ वरुण स॒प्तस॑प्त त्रे॒धा तिष्ठ॑न्ति॒ विषि॑ता॒ रुश॑न्तः । छि॒नन्तु॒ सर्वे॒ अनृ॑तं॒ वद॑न्तं॒ यः स॑त्यवा॒द्यति॒ तं सृ॑जन्तु ॥६॥
Ye te pāśā Varuṇa saptasapta tredhā tiṣṭhanti viṣitā ruśantaḥ. Chinnantu sarve anṛtaṃ vadantaṃ yaḥ satyavādy ati taṃ sṛjantu.
Those nooses of yours, Varuṇa—seven and seven—stand parted in three, gleaming. Let them all cut down the one who speaks untruth; but let them set free the one who speaks truth.

श॒तेन॒ पाशै॑र॒भि धे॑हि वरुणैनं॒ मा ते॑ मोच्यनृत॒वाङ् नृ॑चक्षः । आस्तां जा॒ल्म उ॒दरं॑ श्रंसयि॒त्वा कोश॑ इवाब॒न्धः प॑रिकृ॒त्यमा॑नः ॥७॥
Śatena pāśair abhi dhehi Varuṇa enaṃ mā te mocyanṛtavāṅ nṛcakṣaḥ. Āstāṃ jālma udaraṃ śraṃsayitvā kośa ivābandhaḥ parikṛtyamānaḥ.
With a hundred nooses, Varuṇa, encompass this man; do not release him—the false-speaker with human eyes. Let the wretch sit, belly shamed; like a skin-bag bound round, let him be trussed tight.

यः स॑मा॒म्यो॒३वरु॑णो॒ यो व्या॒म्यो॒३यः सं॑दे॒श्यो॒३वरु॑णो॒ यो वि॑दे॒श्यः । यो दै॒वो वरु॑णो॒ यश्च॒ मानु॑षः ॥८॥
Yaḥ samāmyaḥ Varuṇo yo vyāmyaḥ yo saṃdeśyaḥ Varuṇo yo videśyaḥ. Yo daivo Varuṇo yaś ca mānuṣaḥ.
That Varuṇa who is of equal measure, who is of full span, who is to be worshiped here, and who is to be revered afar; the divine Varuṇa, and the human one as well.

तैस्त्वा॒ सर्वै॑र॒भि ष्या॑मि॒ पाशै॑रसावामुष्यायणामुष्याः पुत्र । तानु॑ ते॒ सर्वा॑ननु॒संदि॑शामि ॥९॥
Taistvā sarvair abhi ṣyāmi pāśair asāv āmuṣyāyaṇāmuṣyāḥ putra. Tānu te sarvān anusandiśāmi.
With all those nooses I encompass you—this one, son of so-and-so of such a lineage. I dispatch them all to you in pursuit.
