राजा च शांतनुर द्विजवचनोत्पन्नपरिवेदनशोकस तान ब्राह्मणान अग्रणीकृत्याग्रजराज्यप्रदानायारण्यं जगाम। तदाश्रमम उपगताश च तम अवनीपतिपुत्रं देवापिम उपतस्थुः। ते ब्राह्मणा वेदवादानुबद्धानि वचांसि राज्यम अग्रजेन कर्तव्यम इत्य अर्थवन्ति तम ऊचुः। असाव अपि देवापिर वेदवादविरोधियुक्तिदूषितम अनेकप्रकारं तान आह। ततस ते ब्राह्मणाः शांतनुम ऊचुः। आगच्छ भो राजन्न अलम अत्रातिनिर्बन्धेन प्रशान्त एवासाव अनावृष्टिदोषः पतितो ऽयम अनादिकालम अहितवेदवचनदूषणोच्चारणात। पतिते चाग्रजे नैव पारिवेद्यं भवतीत्य उक्तः शांतनुः स्वपुरम आगत्य राज्यम अकरोत। वेदवादविरोधिवचनोच्चारणदूषिते च तस्मिन देवापाव अखिलस्य निष्पत्तये ववर्ष भगवान पर्जन्यः। बाह्लीकस्य सोमदत्तः पुत्रो ऽभूत।।
rājā ca śāṃtanur dvijavacanotpannaparivedanaśokas tān brāhmaṇān agraṇīkṛtyāgrajarājyapradānāyāraṇyaṃ jagāma| tadāśramam upagatāś ca tam avanīpatiputraṃ devāpim upatasthuḥ| te brāhmaṇā vedavādānubaddhāni vacāṃsi rājyam agrajena kartavyam ity arthavanti tam ūcuḥ| asāv api devāpir vedavādavirodhiyuktidūṣitam anekaprakāraṃ tān āha| tatas te brāhmaṇāḥ śāṃtanum ūcuḥ| āgaccha bho rājann alam atrātinirbandhena praśānta evāsāv anāvṛṣṭidoṣaḥ patito 'yam anādikālam ahitavedavacanadūṣaṇoccāraṇāt| patite cāgraje naiva pārivedyaṃ bhavatīty uktaḥ śāṃtanuḥ svapuram āgatya rājyam akarot| vedavādavirodhivacanoccāraṇadūṣite ca tasmin devāpāv akhilasya niṣpattaye vavarṣa bhagavān parjanyaḥ| bāhlīkasya somadattaḥ putro 'bhūt||
The king Shantanu, filled with sorrow from the words of the Brahmanas, went to the forest to grant the kingdom to his elder son. Upon reaching the hermitage, the son of the earth approached the deity. The Brahmanas, bound by the words of the Vedas, told him that the kingdom should be given by the elder. They also said that this deity is tainted by the reasoning that opposes the Vedic words. Then the Brahmanas said to Shantanu, 'Come, O king, enough of this excessive constraint; he is peaceful and has fallen due to the fault of not having rain for a long time, due to the utterance of harmful Vedic words since time immemorial.' Upon this, Shantanu returned to his city and did not grant the kingdom. When the words opposing the Vedas were uttered, the deity Parjanya rained for the benefit of all.
