ततश चाशेषराष्ट्रविनाशम अवेक्ष्यासौ राजा ब्राह्मणान अपृच्छत। कस्माद अस्मद्राष्ट्रे देवो न वर्षति को ममापराध इति। ते तम ऊचुः। अग्रजस्य ते ऽर्हेयम अवनिस त्वया भुज्यते परिवेत्ता त्वम इत्य उक्तः स पुनस तान अपृच्छत। किं मया विधेयम इति। ते पुनर अप्य ऊचुः। यावद देवापिर न पतनादिभिर दोषैर अभिभूयते तावत तस्यार्हं राज्यम। तद अलम एतेन तस्मै दीयताम इत्य उक्ते तस्य मन्त्रिप्रवरेणाश्मसारिणातत्रारण्ये तपस्विनो वेदवादविरोधवक्तारः प्रयुक्ताः।।
tataś cāśeṣarāṣṭravināśam avekṣyāsau rājā brāhmaṇān apṛcchat| kasmād asmadrāṣṭre devo na varṣati ko mamāparādha iti| te tam ūcuḥ| agrajasya te 'rheyam avanis tvayā bhujyate parivettā tvam ity uktaḥ sa punas tān apṛcchat| kiṃ mayā vidheyam iti| te punar apy ūcuḥ| yāvad devāpir na patanādibhir doṣair abhibhūyate tāvat tasyārhaṃ rājyam| tad alam etena tasmai dīyatām ity ukte tasya mantripravareṇāśmasāriṇātatrāraṇye tapasvino vedavādavirodhavaktāraḥ prayuktāḥ||
Then, observing the destruction of the entire kingdom, the king asked the Brahmanas, 'Why does the deity not rain in our kingdom? What is my offense?' They replied to him, 'It is appropriate for you, the one who is the protector of the earth, to ask this, but you should inquire again, 'What should I do?' They further said, 'As long as the deities are not overcome by faults such as fall and others, your kingdom is worthy. Therefore, let it be given to him.' Upon this, the chief minister, Ashmasarini, along with the ascetics who oppose the Vedic words, were engaged in this matter.
