भरतस्य पत्नित्रये नव पुत्रा बभूवुः। नैते ममानुरूपा इत्य अभिहितास तन्मातरो जघ्नुः परित्यागभयात। ततो ऽस्य वितथे पुत्रजन्मनि पुत्रार्थिनो मरुत्सोमयाजिनो दीर्घतमसा पार्ष्ण्यपास्तबृहस्पतिवीर्याद उतथ्यपत्नीममतासमुत्पन्नो भरद्वाजाख्यः पुत्रो मरुद्भिर दत्तः।।
bharatasya patnitraye nava putrā babhūvuḥ| naite mamānurūpā ity abhihitās tanmātaro jaghnuḥ parityāgabhayāt| tato 'sya vitathe putrajanmani putrārthino marutsomayājino dīrghatamasā pārṣṇyapāstabṛhaspativīryād utathyapatnīmamatāsamutpanno bharadvājākhyaḥ putro marudbhir dattaḥ||
From the three wives of Bharata, nine sons were born. They were not like me, and thus the mothers of those sons killed them out of fear of abandonment. Therefore, in the false birth of a son, for the sake of the son, the long-suffering son named Bharadvāja was born, given by the Maruts.
