daṇḍā ivedgoajanāsa āsanparicchinnā bharatā arbhakāsaḥ abhavacca puraetā vasiṣṭha ādittṛtsūnāṃ viśo aprathanta
Like clubs the herdsmen stood about, the herds were severed, the bulls bore burdens. Formerly these Vasishthas were in the town; they shone forth like suns piercing through arrows.
The Bharatas, inferior (to their foes), were shorn (of their possessions), like he staves for driving cattle,(stripped of their leaves and branches); but Vasiṣṭha became their family priest, and the people of the Tṛtsusprospered.
Like sticks and staves wherewith they drive the cattle, Stripped bare, the Bharatas were found defenceless: Vasistha then became their chief and leader: then widely. were the Trtsus' clans extended.
