From the gods and first among sacrifices comes immortal splendor, the most excellent portion. Savita gave the first food; he wrought life for men by awakening them with dawn.
First you engender for the adorable gods the best portion, immortality; then, Savitā, you set open (the day) to the donor (of the oblation), and (grant) successive existences to men.
For thou at first producest for the holy Gods the noblest of all portions, immor-tality: Thereafter as a gift to men, O Savitar, thou openest existence, life succeeding life.
