jaghāna vṛtraṃ svadhitirvaneva ruroja puro aradanna sindhūn bibheda giriṃ navaminna kumbhamā gā indro akṛṇuta svayugbhiḥ
He smote Vritra and made the waters flow; in the forest the loud roaring advanced, rivers burst forth. He cleft the mountain; Indra made the new urn; with his own hosts he wrought the deed.
(Indra) slew Vṛtra as an axe (cuts down) a tree; he demolished the cities (of the foes), he dug out therivers; he shattered the cloud like a new pitcher; with his allies (the Maruts) he recovered the cattle.
As an axe fells the tree so be slew Vrtra, brake down the strongholds and dug out the rivers. He cleft the mountain like a new-made pitcher. Indra brought forth the kine with his Companions.
