Upon the flanks the companion poured, like a dancer the waters returned; the chest like a cow gives milk. The lights for the world he makes; the cows do not wander, we turn about in joyous herds.

Uṣas cuts off the accusative ulated (glooms), as a barber (cuts off the hair); she bares her bosom as a cow yields her udder (to the milker); and, as cattle hasten to their pastures, she speeds to the east, and shedding light upon all the world, dissipates the darkness.

She, like a dancer, puts her broidered garments on: as a cow yields her udder so she bares her breast. Creating light for all the world of life, the Dawn hath laid the darkness open as the cows their stall.
