pituḥ pratnasya janmanā vadāmasi somasya jihvā pra jigāti cakṣasā yadīmindraṃ śamyṛkvāṇa āśatādinnāmāni yajñiyāni dadhire
I speak of the father of the first by birth: Soma’s tongue sings forth with the eye. If you calm Indra, having bound names like offerings, they gave sacrificial goods.
We declare by our birth from our ancient sire, that the tongue (of praise) accompanies the manifesting (invocation of the Maruts) at the libations of the Soma; for, inasmuch as they stood by encouraging Indra in the conflict, they have acquired names that are to be recited at sacrifices.
We speak by our descent from our primeval Sire; our tongue, when we behold the Soma, stirs itself. When, shouting, they had joined Indra in toil of fight, then only they obtained their sacrificial names.
