yathā pūrvebhyo jaritṛbhya indra maya ivāpo na tṛṣyate babhūtha tāmanu tvā nividaṃ johavīmi vidyāmeṣaṃ vṛjanaṃ jīradānum
As in former times for the ancient sacrificers, O Indra, so may the waters not thirst for me. Therefore I pour you the libation; I seek this bounty, the moving herd, with life‑giving thought.
Inasmuch Indra, as you have been the giver of happiness to your ancient encomiasts, like water to one who is thirsty, therefore I constantly repeat this your praise, that I may thence obtain food, strength, and long life.
As thou, O Indra, to the ancient singers wast ever joy, like water to the thirsty, So unto thee I sing this invocation. May we find strengthenifig food in full abundance.
