By Gayatri the sun is measured, by arc and by Sama, or by Trishtubh is the speech measured. By speech both two-footed and four-footed, by letters, the seven voices are measured.
He constructs the prayer with the gāyatrī metre; with the prayer (he constructs) the Soma, and with the triṣṭubh metre the couplet (or triplet); with the couplet (or triplet) he constructs the hymn with (verses of) two or four distichs; and with the syllable they construct the seven metres.
With Gayatri he measures out the praise-song, Sama with praise-song, triplet with the Tristup. The triplet witli the two or four-foot measure, and with the syllable they form seven metres.
