Sūta said: If he repeats the japas a crore of times he is purified from the sins of treachery to the preceptor and the deities. For the expiation of great sins, one shall repeat Śiva’s mantra in accordance with the injunction. If the sinner is, otherwise, of good conduct he is purified by half the number of japas. O sages of good holy rites, all the Upapātakins (those who commit subsidiary sins) get purified by half the number of japas.
