Nandin said: The lord of the universe, Rudra,[2] wanted to test the sincerity of the dwellers of the Dāru forest in respect of their sacrificial rites. He wanted to turn their minds from the observance of sacrificial rites to the path of renunciation. Thus in order to test their faith, and sportively too, he assumed a deformed but attractive appearance. He had three eyes and two hands. He was nude, and dark in complexion.
