He mentions, by a pair of verses, the causes of attachment and other faults in order that they may be avoided. ‘Sammohah’ means unlawful desire. The word moha is here explained as upagīta-sumohā—an intense delusion. The mark of adharmā (unrighteousness) is established in sinful acts. Elsewhere sammohah is explained as adharmakāmitā—desire for unrighteousness. Distortion of memory (smṛti-vibhrama) is the destruction of memory by opposing factors; destruction of intelligence (buddhi-nāśa) is the intellect’s ruin; destruction of the self’s discriminative faculty (sarvātmanā doṣa-buddhi-nāśa) is the loss of right judgment; one perishes and attains hellish miseries. It is likewise said: when forgetfulness arises in those who are inclined to unrighteousness, and when faults and their results are unseen, they fall into hell.
