‘The self is eternal’ — why say the self is eternal if the self itself is not eternal? The answer: the Purāṇic and śruti authorities assert the being of Brahman, the cause, as existent; not so for an asat (nonbeing). Nature and the embodied being and time are all declared respectively as they are in Śiva-Vishnu Purāṇa: that which is different is said to exist separately. The existence of cause in the form of nonbeing is taught: the Lord is the sovereign of both the existent and non‑existent, the unmanifest and the manifest; from the non‑existent arises the existent — thus say the scriptures. The tradition accepts both statements; this is the final determination.
