।।17.16।।सौम्यत्वमक्रौर्यम्।अक्रूरः सौम्य उच्यते इत्यभिधानम्। मौनं मननशीलत्वम्। बाल्यं च पाण्डित्यं निर्विद्याथ मुनिः [बृ.उ.3।5।1] इति हि श्रुतिः। एतेन हीदं सर्वं (अनन्तं) मतं यदनेन हीदं सर्वं मतं तस्मान्मुनिस्तस्मान्मुनिरित्याचक्षते इति भाल्लवेयश्रुतिः। कथं चान्यथा मानसं तपः स्यात्।
‘Saumyatvam’ and ‘akrauryam’: akrura is called saumyas—these are synonyms. ‘Mouna’ is contemplative steadiness. ‘Bālya and pañditya are not known to the sage’—so the Shruti states. By this it is held that all this (indeed everything) is what the sage regards as infinite; hence it is said, ‘from that the sage is named.’ How else could mental austerity be called austerity?
