Sūta said:: With due formality, he accepted Paila as the listener (i.e. disciple) unto the Ṛgveda, O Brāhmaṇa, Vaiśaṃpāyana as the expounder of the Yajurveda; he accepted Jaimini as the disciple for the Sāmveda and the meaning (of its mantras). Similarly, he accepted Sumantu, the excellent sage, as the disciple for the Atharvaveda. The saintly lord accepted me as the disciple for Itihāsas, Purāṇas and Kalpavākyas.
