The Manu Sukta (Rigveda 10.53) is one of the most ancient hymns of the Rigveda, composed by Manu Vaivasvata — the first human, son of Vivasvat (the Sun god), and the progenitor of all humanity. In this sukta, Manu addresses the Viśvadevas (All-gods) and establishes the sacred fire, the ritual of yajña, and the foundations of dharmic civilization. The hymn is the Vedic charter of human life — Manu's voice declaring the path of light, sacrifice, and right conduct for all his descendants. The word 'mantra', 'manuṣya' (human being), and 'manas' (mind) are all derived from the root of Manu's name.
मनु सूक्त (ऋग्वेद 10.53) ऋग्वेद के सर्वाधिक प्राचीन सूक्तों में से एक है, जिसके द्रष्टा मनु वैवस्वत हैं — प्रथम मानव, विवस्वान् (सूर्यदेव) के पुत्र और समस्त मानव जाति के पूर्वज। इस सूक्त में मनु विश्वेदेवों को संबोधित करते हुए अग्नि-स्थापना, यज्ञ और धर्मपूर्ण सभ्यता की नींव स्थापित करते हैं।
आ नो भद्राः क्रतवो यन्तु विश्वतः । अदब्धासो अपरीतास उद्भिदः ॥
Translation
Let noble thoughts come to us from all directions — undeceived, unobstructed, and upwelling like a spring of pure water.
अग्निर्होता नो अध्वरे यजत्वा सुरत्नाय । स नः पर्षद् अति द्विषः ॥
Translation
May Agni, our priest and invoker at this sacrifice, worship for our supreme blessing. May he carry us across and beyond all adversaries.
दिवे-दिवे सावितुर् मन्त्रमुत्तमं विश्वाहा सुप्रयसं सोमपीतये । मनोः पन्थां अनु तिष्ठन्त आर्यः ॥
Translation
Day after day, the noble ones follow the path of Manu — reciting the supreme mantra of Savitṛ, always with joy, for the drinking of Soma.
मनुर्भव जनया दैव्यं जनम् । श्रेष्ठं वर्णमभि संव्रजाति ॥
Translation
Be Manu! Generate a divine people. He who is like Manu walks toward the highest and noblest nature.
यत् किञ्च मनुरवदत् तद् भेषजम् । यद् वायुरब्रवीत् तद् भेषजम् ॥
Translation
Whatever Manu has spoken — that is medicine. Whatever Vāyu (the wind) has declared — that too is medicine.
अग्निं मनुः शरणं शर्म साधु । तं त्वा शोचिष्ठ दीदिवः सुशस्तिभिः ॥
Translation
Manu properly established Agni as refuge and well-being for all. O most resplendent and ever-shining Agni, we praise you with our finest hymns.
नाहं तन्तुं न वि जानाम्योतुं । न यं वयन्ति समरे वयांसि ॥
Translation
I do not know the warp and weft of this cosmic loom — that which the divine powers weave together in their great assembly.
मनोः पन्थामनु तिष्ठन्त आर्यः । श्रेयांसः पापादुत भद्रः पशुभ्यः ॥
Translation
The noble ones who walk the path of Manu become better — elevated above sin, and blessed with abundance.
मनुर्वैवस्वतो राजा यो ऽस्माकं पितामहः । तस्य पन्थानमन्वेम पिता पितामहो यथा ॥
Translation
Manu Vaivasvata — king, son of the Sun, forefather of us all — his path we shall walk, as our fathers and forefathers walked before us.
