arjuno 'pi tadānviṣya kṛṣṇarāmakalevare saṃskāraṃ lambhayām āsa tathānyeṣām anukramāt ||
Even Arjuna, having perceived that, extended the ritual in the body of Krishna-Rama, as did others in sequence.

aṣṭau mahiṣyaḥ kathitā rukmiṇīpramukhās tu yāḥ upaguhya harer dehaṃ viviśus tā hutāśanam ||
The eight queens, led by Rukmini, embraced the body of the Lord and entered the fire.

revatī caiva rāmasya deham āśliṣya sattama viveśa jvalitaṃ vahniṃ tatsaṅgāhlādaśītalam ||
Revati, embracing the body of Rama, entered the blazing fire, which was cool with the joy of that union.

Hearing this, Ugrasena and the sons of Anakadundubhi, Devaki and Rohini, entered the presence of the fire.

tato 'rjunaḥ pretakāryaṃ kṛtvā teṣāṃ yathāvidhi niścakrāma janaṃ sarvaṃ gṛhītvā vajram eva ca ||
Then Arjuna, having performed the rites for the dead, took all the people and the thunderbolt, and departed as per the rules.

The wives of Krishna, having emerged from Dwarka, along with thousands of others, followed Arjuna, protecting the people with their arms.

sabhā sudharmā kṛṣṇena martyaloke samujjhite svargaṃ jagāma maitreya pārijātaś ca pādapaḥ ||
In the assembly of Sudharma, Krishna, having departed from the mortal world, went to heaven, and the tree Parijata also followed.

यस्मिन दिने हरिर यातो दिवं संत्यज्य मेदिनीम तस्मिन्न एवावतीर्णो ऽयं कालकायो बली कलिः ।।
yasmin dine harir yāto divaṃ saṃtyajya medinīm tasminn evāvatīrṇo 'yaṃ kālakāyo balī kaliḥ ||
On the day when Hari departed to heaven, abandoning the earth, on that very day, Kali, the powerful one, descended in the form of time.

plāvayām āsa tāṃ śūnyāṃ dvārakāṃ ca mahodadhiḥ yadudevagṛhaṃ tv ekaṃ nāplāvayata sāgaraḥ ||
The great ocean flooded the empty Dwarka, but it did not inundate the single abode of the deity.

nātikrāntum alaṃ brahmaṃs tad adyāpi mahodadhiḥ nityaṃ saṃnihitas tatra bhagavān keśavo yataḥ ||
The great ocean has not yet transcended the Brahman, for the Lord Keshava is eternally present there.

तद अतीव महापुण्यं सर्वपातकनाशनम विष्णुक्रीडान्वितं स्थानं दृष्ट्वा पापात प्रमुच्यते ।।
tad atīva mahāpuṇyaṃ sarvapātakanāśanam viṣṇukrīḍānvitaṃ sthānaṃ dṛṣṭvā pāpāt pramucyate ||
That place, which is greatly auspicious and destroys all sins, liberates one from sin when seen, being associated with the play of Vishnu.

pārthaḥ pañcanade deśe bahudhānyasamanvite cakāra vāsaṃ sarvasya janasya munisattama ||
The great sage Partha established a residence for all the people in the land of Panchanada, which is rich in grains.

tato lobhaḥ samabhavat pārthenaikena dhanvinā dṛṣṭvā striyo nīyamānā dasyūnāṃ nihateśvarāḥ ||
Then, greed arose in Partha, the lone archer, upon seeing women being taken away by the slain robbers.

tatas te pāpakarmāṇo lobhopahatacetasaḥ ābhīrā mantrayām āsuḥ sametyātyantadurmadāḥ ||
Then, those who are sinful and whose minds are afflicted by greed, fearful, conspired together, being extremely arrogant.

ayam eko 'rjuno dhanvī strījanaṃ nihateśvaram nayaty asmān atikramya dhig etad bhavatāṃ balam ||
This single Arjuna, an archer, leads us, having slain the women and the lord of the slain. Alas, what strength do you possess?

hatvā garvaṃ samārūḍho bhīṣmadroṇajayadrathān karṇādīṃś ca na jānāti balaṃ grāmanivāsinām ||
Having slain the pride of Bhishma, Drona, and Jayadratha, he does not know the strength of the villagers.

he he yaṣṭīr mahāyāmā gṛhṇītāyaṃ sudurmatiḥ sarvān evāvajānāti kiṃ vo bāhubhir unnataiḥ ||
O, O, the great staff bearer, this one with a very wicked mind knows all. What can you do with your raised arms?

Then, the armed Dasyas, the plunderers, rushed towards that slain lord in thousands.

tato nivṛtya kaunteyaḥ prāhābhīrān hasann iva nivartadhvam adharmajñā yadi na stha mumūrṣavaḥ ||
Then, having withdrawn, Kaunteya spoke, laughing as if, 'Return, O ignorant of dharma, if you are not about to die.'

avajñāya vacas tasya jagṛhus te tadā dhanam strījanaṃ caiva maitreya viṣvaksenaparigraham ||
Disregarding his words, they then seized wealth and women, O Maitreya, along with the possessions of Vishvaksena.

tato 'rjuno dhanur divyaṃ gāṇḍīvam ajaraṃ yudhi āropayitum ārebhe na śaśāka ca vīryavān ||
Then Arjuna, in battle, attempted to raise the divine bow Gandiva, which is imperishable; he could not do so, though he was powerful.

cakāra sajjaṃ kṛcchrāc ca tac cābhūc chithilaṃ punaḥ na sasmāra tathāstrāṇi cintayann api pāṇḍavaḥ ||
He prepared himself with difficulty, and that bow became slack again; the Pandava did not remember the weapons, even while thinking.

śarān mumoca caiteṣu pārtho vairiṣv amarṣitaḥ tvagbhedaṃ te paraṃ cakrur astā gāṇḍīvadhanvanā ||
Arjuna released arrows at them, enraged at the enemies; they pierced through you, O Gandiva-bearer.

vahninā ye 'kṣayā dattāḥ śarās te 'pi kṣayaṃ yayuḥ yudhyataḥ saha gopālair arjunasya bhavakṣaye ||
Those arrows that were given by fire, they too met their end, while fighting alongside the cowherds in Arjuna's destruction.

acintayac ca kaunteyaḥ kṛṣṇasyaiva hi tad balam yan mayā śarasaṃghātaiḥ sakalā bhūbhṛto jitāḥ ||
O Kaunteya, consider that strength of Krishna, by which I have defeated all the earth's bearers with my arrows.

miṣataḥ pāṇḍuputrasya tatas tāḥ pramadottamāḥ ābhīrair apakṛṣyanta kāmāc cānyāḥ pravavrajuḥ ||
Then, the finest maidens of the Pandavas were drawn away by the Ābhīras, and others went away due to desire.

tataḥ śareṣu kṣīṇeṣu dhanuṣkoṭyā dhanaṃjayaḥ jaghāna dasyūṃs te cāsya prahārāñ jahasur mune ||
Then, as the arrows were weakened, Dhananjaya struck the robbers, and they laughed at his blows, O sage.

prekṣataś caiva pārthasya vṛṣṇyandhakavarastriyaḥ jagmur ādāya te mlecchāḥ samastā munisattama ||
Seeing this, the women of the Vrishnis and Andhakas came, taking away the mlecchas, O best of sages.

tataḥ suduḥkhito jiṣṇuḥ kaṣṭaṃ kaṣṭam iti bruvan aho bhagavatā tena mukto 'smīti ruroda vai ||
Then, deeply distressed, Jishnu cried, 'Alas! By that Lord, I am liberated!'

तद धनुस तानि शस्त्राणि स रथस ते च वाजिनः सर्वम एकपदे नष्टं दानम अश्रोत्रिये यथा ।।
tad dhanus tāni śastrāṇi sa rathas te ca vājinaḥ sarvam ekapade naṣṭaṃ dānam aśrotriye yathā ||
Those bows and weapons, along with the chariots and horses, are all lost in a single step, like a donation to the unworthy.

अहो ऽतिबलवद दैवं विना तेन महात्मना यद असामर्थ्ययुक्ते ऽपि नीचवर्गे जयप्रदम ।।
aho 'tibalavad daivaṃ vinā tena mahātmanā yad asāmarthyayukte 'pi nīcavarge jayapradam ||
Alas! Without that great soul, even the very strong divine power is ineffective, granting victory to the lowly despite their incapacity.

तौ बाहू स च मे मुष्टिः स्थानं तत सो ऽस्मि चार्जुनः पुण्येनैव विना तेन गतं सर्वम असारताम ।।
tau bāhū sa ca me muṣṭiḥ sthānaṃ tat so 'smi cārjunaḥ puṇyenaiva vinā tena gataṃ sarvam asāratām ||
Those arms and my fist, that place, I am Arjuna; without that virtue, everything has become worthless.

mamārjunatvaṃ bhīmasya bhīmatvaṃ tat kṛtaṃ dhruvam vinā tena yad ābhīrair jito 'haṃ katham anyathā ||
My Arjuna-ness and Bhima's might are surely established; without him, how could I have been conquered by the cowherds?

itthaṃ vadan yayau jiṣṇur mathurākhyaṃ purottamam cakāra tatra rājānaṃ vajraṃ yādavanandanam ||
Thus speaking, Jishnu went to the excellent city of Mathura and there created the king, the thunderbolt, the son of the Yadavas.

sa dadarśa tato vyāsaṃ phālgunaḥ kānanāśrayam tam upetya mahābhāgaṃ vinayenābhyavādayat ||
Then Phalguna saw Vyasa, who was residing in the forest, and approaching the great sage, he respectfully addressed him.

taṃ vandamānaṃ caraṇāv avalokya muniś ciram uvāca pārthaṃ vicchāyaḥ katham atyantam īdṛśaḥ ||
The sage, having seen him reverently bowing at his feet, spoke to Partha, saying, 'How is it that you are in such a state?'

avīrajo'nugamanaṃ brahmahatyāthavā kṛtā dṛḍhāśābhaṅgaduḥkhīva bhraṣṭacchāyo 'si sāmpratam ||
You are either following the path of the unchaste or have committed the sin of killing a Brahmin; you are now in a state of despair.

sāntānikādayo vā te yācamānā nirākṛtāḥ agamyastrīratir vā tvaṃ tenāsi vigataprabhaḥ ||
Whether it is the descendants of Santanika or others, being rejected while begging, you are devoid of radiance.

bhuṅkte 'pradāya viprebhyo eko miṣṭam atho bhavān kiṃ vā kṛpaṇavittāni hṛtāni bhavatārjuna ||
One who enjoys without giving to the Brahmins, O Arjuna, what is the use of wealth that is hoarded?

kaccit tvaṃ śūrpavātasya gocaratvaṃ gato 'rjuna duṣṭacakṣurhato vāpi niḥśrīkaḥ katham anyathā ||
O Arjuna, have you reached the realm of the Shurpa wind? How can one who is struck by the wicked eye be otherwise destitute?

स्पृष्टो नखाम्भसा वाथ घटवार्युक्षितो ऽपि वा तेनातीवासि विच्छायो न्यूनैर वा युधि निर्जितः ।।
spṛṣṭo nakhāmbhasā vātha ghaṭavāryukṣito 'pi vā tenātīvāsi vicchāyo nyūnair vā yudhi nirjitaḥ ||
Whether touched by the nail's brilliance or struck by the wind, you are indeed overshadowed, defeated in battle by the lesser ones.

tataḥ pārtho viniśvasya śrūyatāṃ bhagavann iti prokto yathāvad ācaṣṭe vyāsāyātmaparābhavam ||
Then, Partha, exhaling, said, 'Listen, O Bhagavan,' and spoke as it was, revealing the downfall of Vyasa's soul.

Whatever strength, energy, valor, and glory we have, O Hari, you have left us, abandoning all.

Thus, by the curse of that sage, the beautiful maidens reached Keshava, the husband of Aṣṭāvakra, who had fallen into the hands of robbers.

tat tvayā nātra kartavyaḥ śoko 'lpo 'pi hi pāṇḍava tenaivākhilanāthena sarvaṃ tad upasaṃhṛtam ||
Therefore, O Pandava, you should not grieve, even if it is a little. Everything has been gathered by that Lord.

By your gathering, the strength, brilliance, valor, and greatness are all collected.

jātasya niyato mṛtyuḥ patanaṃ ca tathonnateḥ viprayogāvasānaś ca saṃyogaḥ saṃcayāt kṣayaḥ ||
Death is certain for the born, and so is the fall; separation leads to the end, and union leads to accumulation and decay.

vijñāya na budhāḥ śokaṃ na harṣam upayānti ye teṣām evetare ceṣṭāṃ śikṣantaḥ santi tādṛśāḥ ||
Knowing this, the wise do not approach sorrow or joy; they are those who teach others to act differently.

tasmāt tvayā naraśreṣṭha jñātvaitad bhrātṛbhiḥ saha parityajyākhilaṃ tantraṃ gantavyaṃ tapase vanam ||
Therefore, O best of men, knowing this with your brothers, abandon all the rituals and proceed to the forest for penance.
