cakre karma mahac chaurir bibhrāṇo mānuṣīṃ tanum jigāya śakraṃ śarvaṃ ca sarvān devāṃś ca līlayā ||
The great thief performed a significant act, assuming a human form; he defeated Indra, Shiva, and all the gods playfully.

yac cānyad akarot karma divyaceṣṭāvidhānakṛt tat kathyatāṃ mahābhāga paraṃ kautūhalaṃ hi me ||
Whatever other divine deeds he performed, please narrate them, O great one, for I am indeed very curious.

Listen to this with respect, O sage; just as Varanasi was burnt by Krishna in his human incarnation.

pauṇḍrako vāsudevas tu vāsudevo 'bhavad bhuvi avatīrṇas tvam ity ukto janair ajñānamohitaiḥ ||
Paundraka, the son of Vasudeva, became Vasudeva on earth. He was addressed by the people, who were deluded by ignorance.

sa mene vāsudevo 'ham avatīrṇo mahītale naṣṭasmṛtis tataḥ sarvaṃ viṣṇucihnam acīkarat ||
He thought, 'I am Vasudeva, who has descended on the earth.' After losing his memory, he created all the marks of Vishnu.

dūtaṃ ca preṣayām āsa kṛṣṇāya sumahātmane tyaktvā cakrādikaṃ cihnaṃ madīyaṃ nāma cātmanaḥ ||
He sent a messenger to Krishna, the great soul, abandoning the mark of my wheel and my name.

vāsudevātmakaṃ mūḍha muktvā garvaṃ viśeṣataḥ ātmano jīvitārthāya tato me praṇatiṃ vraja ||
O fool, having abandoned pride, which is the essence of Vasudeva, bow down to me for the purpose of your own livelihood.

ity uktaḥ saṃprahasyainaṃ dūtaṃ prāha janārdanaḥ nijacihnam ahaṃ cakraṃ samutsrakṣye tvayīti vai ||
Thus addressed, Janardana spoke to the messenger, laughing, 'I will abandon my own mark, the wheel, for you.'

vācyaś ca pauṇḍrako gatvā tvayā dūta vaco mama jñātas tvadvākyasadbhāvo yat kāryaṃ tad vidhīyatām ||
The messenger, having gone to the one who is to be addressed, let the work that is to be done, based on your words, be arranged.

I, having taken the mark, will come to your city and will protect your wheel, without any doubt.

ājñāpūrvaṃ ca yad idam āgaccheti tvayoditam saṃpādayiṣye śvas tubhyaṃ tad apy eṣo 'vilambitam ||
As you have instructed, I will accomplish what has been said to come here, and this too will not be delayed for you.

śaraṇaṃ te samabhyetya kartāsmi nṛpate tathā yathā tvatto bhayaṃ bhūyo na me kiṃcid bhaviṣyati ||
I take refuge in you, O King, so that no fear may arise from you for me.

ity ukte 'pagate dūte saṃsmṛtyābhyāgataṃ hariḥ garutmantam athāruhya tvaritaṃ tatpuraṃ yayau ||
Thus spoken, the Lord, remembering the messenger who had departed, quickly mounted Garuda and went to that city.

Hearing about the endeavor of Keshava, the king of Kashi then set out with his entire army.

tato balena mahatā kāśirājabalena ca pauṇḍrako vāsudevo 'sau keśavābhimukhaṃ yayau ||
Then, with great strength, the king of Kashi and Paundraka, the son of Vasudeva, proceeded towards Keshava.

taṃ dadarśa harir dūrād udārasyandane sthitam cakrahastaṃ gadākhaḍgabāhuṃ pāṇigatāmbujam ||
From a distance, he saw Hari standing in a grand chariot, holding a discus, with a mace and sword in his arms, and a lotus in his hand.

sragdharaṃ dhṛtaśārṅgaṃ ca suparṇaracitadhvajam vakṣaḥsthale kṛtaṃ cāsya śrīvatsaṃ dadṛśe hariḥ ||
He saw Hari adorned with a garland, holding the Sharanga bow, and with a flag made by the divine eagle on his chest, along with the Srivatsa mark.

kirīṭakuṇḍaladharaṃ pītavāsaḥsamanvitam dṛṣṭvā taṃ bhāvagambhīraṃ jahāsa garuḍadhvajaḥ ||
Seeing him adorned with a crown and earrings, and dressed in yellow garments, the eagle-bannered one laughed at the profound demeanor of that figure.

In battle, this one fought with strength, aided by elephants and horses, wielding a trident, mace, and bow with great power.

kṣaṇena śārṅganirmuktaiḥ śarair arividāraṇaiḥ gadācakranipātaiś ca sūdayām āsa tadbalam ||
In an instant, he released arrows from the Sharanga bow, defeating the enemies with blows from his mace and discus.

Having defeated the strength of the king of Kashi, Janardana spoke to the foolish Paundra, marked by his own insignia.

What you have stated through the messenger regarding me, I shall fulfill those signs you have mentioned.

This discus has been released, your mace has been cast aside; let the mighty Garuda carry your flag as indicated.

ity uccārya vimuktena cakreṇāsau vidāritaḥ pothito gadayā bhagno garutmāṃś ca garutmatā ||
Thus, having spoken, he was freed and struck down by the wheel, beaten by the mace, and Garuda was broken by Garuda's might.

Then, in the world filled with cries, the mighty king of Kashi fought with Vasudeva, standing in the presence of his friend.

tataḥ śārṅgadhanurmuktaiś chittvā tasya śaraiḥ śiraḥ kāśipuryāṃ sa cikṣepa kurvaṃl lokasya vismayam ||
Then, having released the arrows from the Sharanga bow, he struck off the head of that one in Kashi, creating wonder in the world.

Having killed Paundraka and the king of Kashi along with his followers, he returned to Dwaraka, enjoying like one who has gone to heaven.

Seeing that head fall, the people in the city of Kashi exclaimed, 'What is this?' in utter astonishment.

Knowing that his son was killed by Vasudeva, he then, along with the priest, pleased Shankara.

In the sacred place of Avimukta, pleased by him, Shankara then spoke to the son of the king, 'Choose a boon.'

sa vavre bhagavan kṛtyā pitṛhantur vadhāya me samuttiṣṭhatu kṛṣṇasya tvatprasādān maheśvara ||
He chose, 'May the killer of my father rise by the grace of Krishna, O Maheshvara.'

evaṃ bhaviṣyatīty ukte dakṣiṇāgner anantaram mahākṛtyā samuttasthau tasyaivāgniniveśanāt ||
Thus it was said that thereafter, after the invocation of the southern fire, the great act arose.

tato jvālākarālāsyā jvalatkeśakalāpikā kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇeti kupitā kṛtyā dvāravatīṃ yayau ||
Then, from the fearsome flame, the fiery-haired goddess, angry, went to Dwaravati, shouting 'Krishna! Krishna!'.

Seeing her, the sage with trembling eyes, went to the refuge of the world, Madhusudana.

This was accomplished by the daughter of the king of Kashi, worshipping the banner of the bull, understood by the one with the discus.

O destroyer of this fierce act, with flames like a fiery mane, the wheel was released, playfully engaged in sport.

From the terrifying roar of that fiery matted hair, he quickly followed the Sudarshana wheel.

The fierce act was destroyed by the power of the wheel; then the goddess Maheshwari, overwhelmed by speed, also followed her.

The accomplished one swiftly entered Varanasi, endowed with the power of the great sage, repelling the influence of the discus of Vishnu.

Then, the strength of Kashi, along with the might of the Pramathas, armed with all weapons, advanced towards the discus.

śastrāstramokṣacaturaṃ dagdhvā tad balam ojasā kṛtyāgarbhām aśeṣāṃ tāṃ tadā vārāṇasīṃ purīm ||
Having burned that skillful weapon, he then destroyed the entire city of Varanasi with great energy.

ज्वालापरिष्कृताशेषगृहप्राकारचत्वराम ददाह तद धरेश चक्रं सकलाम एव तां पुरीम ।।
jvālāpariṣkṛtāśeṣagṛhaprākāracatvarām dadāha tad dhareś cakraṃ sakalām eva tāṃ purīm ||
