gārgyaṃ goṣṭhyāṃ dvijaṃ śyālaḥ ṣaṇḍa ity uktavān dvija yadūnāṃ saṃnidhau sarve jahasur yādavās tataḥ ||
The one who was called Shyala, a Brahmin in the assembly, spoke thus: All the Yadavas laughed at the presence of the Yadus.

ततः कोपसमाविष्टो दक्षिणापथम एत्य सः सुतम इच्छंस तपस तेपे यदुचक्रभयावहम ।।
tataḥ kopasamāviṣṭo dakṣiṇāpatham etya saḥ sutam icchaṃs tapas tepe yaducakrabhayāvaham ||
Then, filled with anger, he went to the southern region, desiring a son, and performed penance that would instill fear in the Yadus.

ārādhayan mahādevaṃ so 'yaścūrṇam abhakṣayat dadau varaṃ ca tuṣṭo 'smai varṣe dvādaśame haraḥ ||
Worshiping the great God, he consumed the powder, and pleased, the Lord granted him a boon in the twelfth year.

sabhājayām āsa ca taṃ yavaneśo hy anātmajaḥ tadyoṣitsaṃgamāc cāsya putro 'bhūd alisaṃnibhaḥ ||
The Lord of the Yavanas honored him, and from the union with that woman, a son resembling him was born.

taṃ kālayavanaṃ nāma rājye sve yavaneśvaraḥ abhiṣicya vanaṃ yāto vajrāgrakaṭhinorasam ||
That Kaalayavana, the lord of the Yavanas, was anointed and went into the forest, tasting the essence of the hardest diamond.

He, intoxicated with valor, asked the powerful kings on earth, Narada, tell me about the Yadavas.

mlecchakoṭisahasrāṇāṃ sahasraiḥ so 'bhisaṃvṛtaḥ gajāśvarathasaṃpannaiś cakāra paramodyamam ||
Surrounded by thousands of mlecchas, he performed a great sacrifice with elephants and horses.

prayayau cāvyavacchinnaṃ chinnayāno dine dine yādavān prati sāmarṣo maitreya mathurāṃ purīm ||
He went daily, unbroken, towards Mathura, filled with anger against the Yadavas.

कृष्णो ऽपि चिन्तयाम आस क्षपितं यादवं बलम यवनेन रणे गम्यं मागधस्य भविष्यति ।।
kṛṣṇo 'pi cintayām āsa kṣapitaṃ yādavaṃ balam yavanena raṇe gamyaṃ māgadhasya bhaviṣyati ||
Krishna also contemplated that the Yadava strength would be diminished by the Yavanas in battle.

मागधेन बलं क्षीणं स कालयवनो बली हन्ता तद इदम आयातं यदूनां व्यसनं द्विधा ।।
māgadhena balaṃ kṣīṇaṃ sa kālayavano balī hantā tad idam āyātaṃ yadūnāṃ vyasanaṃ dvidhā ||
The strength of the Magadha was weakened; the powerful Kalyavana came, bringing disaster to the Yadavas in two ways.

तस्माद दुर्गं करिष्यामि यदूनाम अरिदुर्जयम स्त्रियो ऽपि यत्र युध्येयुः किं पुनर वृष्णिपुंगवाः ।।
tasmād durgaṃ kariṣyāmi yadūnām aridurjayam striyo 'pi yatra yudhyeyuḥ kiṃ punar vṛṣṇipuṃgavāḥ ||
Therefore, I will create a fortress that is difficult to conquer for the Yadavas, where even women can fight; what to speak of the mighty Vrishnis.

मयि मत्ते प्रमत्ते वा सुप्ते प्रवसिते तथा यादवाभिभवं दुष्टा मा कुर्वंस त्व अरयो ऽधिकाः ।।
mayi matte pramatte vā supte pravasite tathā yādavābhibhavaṃ duṣṭā mā kurvaṃs tv arayo 'dhikāḥ ||
Whether I am intoxicated, mad, asleep, or engaged in activities, O enemies, do not cause harm to the Yadavas.

iti saṃcintya govindo yojanāni mahodadhim yayāce dvādaśa purīṃ dvārakāṃ tatra nirmame ||
Thus contemplating, Govinda requested the ocean for a city, and there he established the twelve-petaled Dwarka.

mahodyānāṃ mahāvaprāṃ taḍāgaśataśobhitām prākāragṛhasaṃbādhām indrasyevāmarāvatīm ||
With great gardens and vast lakes adorned with hundreds of parks, it resembled Indra's Amaravati.

mathurāvāsino lokāṃs tatrānīya janārdanaḥ āsanne kālayavane mathurāṃ ca svayaṃ yayau ||
The one who resides in Mathura, Janardana, brought the people there and himself went to Mathura in the presence of Kaliyavana.

बहिर आवसिते सैन्ये मथुराया निरायुधः निर्जगाम स गोविन्दो ददृशे यवनेश्वरम ।।
bahir āvasite sainye mathurāyā nirāyudhaḥ nirjagāma sa govindo dadṛśe yavaneśvaram ||
When the army was stationed outside Mathura, Govinda emerged unarmed and saw the lord of the Yavanas.

स ज्ञात्वा वासुदेवं तं बाहुप्रहरणो नृपः अनुयातो महायोगिचेतोभिः प्राप्यते न यः ।।
sa jñātvā vāsudevaṃ taṃ bāhupraharaṇo nṛpaḥ anuyāto mahāyogicetobhiḥ prāpyate na yaḥ ||
Knowing that Vasudeva was there, the king with powerful arms, followed him, but could not attain him even with the great yogis.

tenānuyātaḥ kṛṣṇo 'pi praviveśa mahāguhām yatra śete mahāvīryo mucukundo nareśvaraḥ ||
Thus followed by him, Krishna also entered the great cave where the mighty Mucukunda, the lord of men, lay.

सो ऽपि प्रविष्टो यवनो दृष्ट्वा शय्यागतं नरम पादेन ताडयाम आस मत्वा कृष्णं सुदुर्मतिः ।।
so 'pi praviṣṭo yavano dṛṣṭvā śayyāgataṃ naram pādena tāḍayām āsa matvā kṛṣṇaṃ sudurmatiḥ ||
Seeing the man who had entered, the Yavana struck him with his foot, thinking he was Krishna, of very poor intellect.

दृष्टमात्रश च तेनासौ जज्वाल यवनो ऽग्निना तत्क्रोधजेन मैत्रेय भस्मीभूतश च तत्क्षणात ।।
dṛṣṭamātraś ca tenāsau jajvāla yavano 'gninā tatkrodhajena maitreya bhasmībhūtaś ca tatkṣaṇāt ||
The moment he was merely seen by him, that Yavana blazed with fire, and due to that anger, Maitreya, he was turned to ashes instantly.

sa hi devāsure yuddhe gato jitvā mahāsurān nidrārtaḥ sumahat kālaṃ nidrāṃ vavre varaṃ surān ||
He, having gone to battle between the gods and demons, having defeated the great demons, chose a long sleep, being weary.

प्रोक्तश च देवैः संसुप्तं यस त्वाम उत्थापयिष्यति देहजेनाग्निना सद्यः स तु भस्मीभविष्यति ।।
proktaś ca devaiḥ saṃsuptaṃ yas tvām utthāpayiṣyati dehajenāgninā sadyaḥ sa tu bhasmībhaviṣyati ||
It is said by the gods that whoever awakens you from deep sleep, that person will immediately turn to ashes by the fire of the body.

एवं दग्ध्वा स तं पापं दृष्ट्वा च मधुसूदनम कस त्वम इत्य आह सो ऽप्य आह जातो ऽहं शशिनः कुले वसुदेवस्य तनयो यदोर वंशसमुद्भवः ।।
evaṃ dagdhvā sa taṃ pāpaṃ dṛṣṭvā ca madhusūdanam kas tvam ity āha so 'py āha jāto 'haṃ śaśinaḥ kule vasudevasya tanayo yador vaṃśasamudbhavaḥ ||
Having burned that sin and seeing Madhusudana, he asked, 'Who are you?' He also said, 'I am born in the lineage of the moon, the son of Vasudeva, who has arisen from the Yadu dynasty.'

saṃsmṛtya praṇipatyainaṃ sarvaṃ sarveśvaraṃ harim prāha jñāto bhavān viṣṇor aṃśas tvaṃ parameśvara ||
Remembering and bowing down to him, the all-powerful Hari, he said, 'O Lord, you are a part of Vishnu, the Supreme Being.'

पुरा गर्गेण कथितम अष्टाविंशतिमे युगे द्वापरान्ते हरेर जन्म यदोर वंशे भविष्यति ।।
purā gargeṇa kathitam aṣṭāviṃśatime yuge dvāparānte harer janma yador vaṃśe bhaviṣyati ||
In the past, it was told by Garg, in the twenty-eighth age, at the end of Dvapara, the birth of Hari will occur in the lineage of Yadu.

tathā hi sumahat tejo nālaṃ soḍhum ahaṃ tava tathā hi sajalāmbhodanādadhīrataraṃ tava vākyaṃ namati caivorvī yuṣmatpādaprapīḍitā ||
Indeed, I cannot bear your immense radiance; likewise, your words, more profound than the ocean, bow down to your feet.

devāsuramahāyuddhe daityasainyamahābhaṭāḥ na sehur mama tejas te tvattejo na sahāmy aham ||
In the great battle between the gods and demons, the mighty demons could not withstand my radiance; I cannot bear your brilliance.

संसारपतितस्यैको जन्तोस त्वं शरणं परम स प्रसीद प्रपन्नार्तिहन्तर हर ममाशुभम ।।
saṃsārapatitasyaiko jantos tvaṃ śaraṇaṃ param sa prasīda prapannārtihantar hara mamāśubham ||
You are the ultimate refuge for the one who has fallen into the cycle of existence; be gracious, O remover of the sufferings of the surrendered, and dispel my inauspiciousness.

त्वं पयोनिधयः शैलाः सरितस त्वं वनानि च मेदिनी गगनं वायुर आपो ऽग्निस त्वं तथा मनः ।।
tvaṃ payonidhayaḥ śailāḥ saritas tvaṃ vanāni ca medinī gaganaṃ vāyur āpo 'gnis tvaṃ tathā manaḥ ||
You are the oceans, the mountains, the rivers, the forests, the earth, the sky, the wind, the waters, the fire, and also the mind.

बुद्धिर अव्याकृतं प्राणाः प्राणेशस त्वं तथा पुमान पुंसः परतरं यच च व्याप्य अजन्मविकल्पवत ।।
buddhir avyākṛtaṃ prāṇāḥ prāṇeśas tvaṃ tathā pumān puṃsaḥ parataraṃ yac ca vyāpy ajanmavikalpavat ||
Intellect, unmanifest, life, the lord of life, you are also the man, and beyond that, you pervade the unborn and the unmanifest.

शब्दादिहीनम अजरम अमेयं क्षयवर्जितम अवृद्धिनाशं तद ब्रह्म त्वम आद्यन्तविवर्जितम ।।
śabdādihīnam ajaram ameyaṃ kṣayavarjitam avṛddhināśaṃ tad brahma tvam ādyantavivarjitam ||
Without sound, imperishable, immeasurable, free from decay, devoid of increase and decrease, that is Brahman, you are beyond beginning and end.

tvatto 'marāḥ sapitaro yakṣagandharvakiṃnarāḥ siddhāś cāpsarasas tvatto manuṣyāḥ paśavaḥ khagāḥ ||
From you, the immortal beings, the ancestors, the Yakshas, the Gandharvas, the Kinnaras, the Siddhas, and the Apsaras arise; from you, humans, animals, and birds.

sarīsṛpā mṛgāḥ sarve tvattaḥ sarve mahīruhāḥ || yac ca bhūtaṃ bhaviṣyac ca kiṃcid atra carācaram ||
All reptiles, all animals, all trees come from you; whatever exists, whatever will exist, all that is here, both the moving and the non-moving.

amūrtaṃ mūrtam athavā sthūlaṃ sūkṣmataraṃ sthitam tat sarvaṃ tvaṃ jagatkartar nāsti kiṃcit tvayā vinā ||
The formless and the formed, or the gross and the subtle, all of this exists through you, O Creator of the universe; without you, nothing exists.

मया संसारचक्रे ऽस्मिन भ्रमता भगवन सदा तापत्रयाभिभूतेन न प्राप्ता निर्वृतिः क्वचित ।।
mayā saṃsāracakre 'smin bhramatā bhagavan sadā tāpatrayābhibhūtena na prāptā nirvṛtiḥ kvacit ||
In this cycle of worldly existence, O Lord, I am always wandering, and I have never attained liberation due to the affliction of the threefold suffering.

दुःखान्य एव सुखानीति मृगतृष्णाजलाशया मया नाथ गृहीतानि तानि तापाय चाभवन ।।
duḥkhāny eva sukhānīti mṛgatṛṣṇājalāśayā mayā nātha gṛhītāni tāni tāpāya cābhavan ||
Only sorrows are happiness, like the mirage of water; O Lord, I have taken them, and they have become a source of suffering.

राज्यम उर्वी बलं कोशो मित्रपक्षस तथात्मजाः भार्या भृत्यजनो ये च शब्दाद्या विषयाः प्रभो ।।
rājyam urvī balaṃ kośo mitrapakṣas tathātmajāḥ bhāryā bhṛtyajano ye ca śabdādyā viṣayāḥ prabho ||
The kingdom, the earth, strength, wealth, friends, offspring, the wife, and the servants, all these subjects, O Lord, arise from sound and other senses.

सुखबुद्ध्या मया सर्वं गृहीतम इदम अव्यय परिणामे तद एवेश तापात्मकम अभून मम ।।
sukhabuddhyā mayā sarvaṃ gṛhītam idam avyaya pariṇāme tad eveśa tāpātmakam abhūn mama ||
With a joyful mind, I have taken all this imperishable; in its transformation, it has become a source of suffering for me.

devalokagatiṃ prāpto nātha devagaṇo 'pi hi mattaḥ sāhāyyakāmo 'bhūc śāśvatī kutra nirvṛtiḥ ||
Having attained the realm of the gods, even the lord of the divine beings, desiring my assistance, wondered where eternal bliss could be found.

tvām anārādhya jagatāṃ sarveṣāṃ prabhavāspadam śāśvatī prāpyate kena parameśvara nirvṛtiḥ ||
Who, O Supreme Being, can attain eternal bliss without worshipping you, the source of all worlds?

tvanmāyāmūḍhamanaso janmamṛtyujarādikam avāpya tāpān paśyanti pretarājānanaṃ narāḥ ||
Those whose minds are deluded by your illusion see the king of the dead, having attained birth, death, old age, and other sufferings.

Then, due to their own actions, they suffer greatly in the hells, experiencing immense pain, devoid of your true form.

I am completely absorbed in your illusion, O Supreme Being, and I wander in the depths of pride and attachment.

सो ऽहं त्वां शरणम अपारम ईशम ईड्यं संप्राप्तः परमपदं यतो न किंचित संसारश्रमपरितापतप्तचेता निर्वाणे परिणतधाम्नि साभिलाषः ।।
so 'haṃ tvāṃ śaraṇam apāram īśam īḍyaṃ saṃprāptaḥ paramapadaṃ yato na kiṃcit saṃsāraśramaparitāpataptacetā nirvāṇe pariṇatadhāmni sābhilāṣaḥ ||
I take refuge in You, the infinite Lord, the worshipped one, having attained the supreme abode, where nothing is felt of the toil of worldly existence; my mind, tormented by the pains of existence, is transformed in the state of liberation, with desire.
