jarāsaṃdhasute kaṃsa upayeme mahābalaḥ astiṃ prāptiṃ ca maitreya tayor bhartṛhaṇaṃ harim ||
The mighty Kansa, son of Jarasandha, sought to obtain the body and the life of Hari, as per Maitreya's words.

महाबलपरीवारो मगधाधिपतिर बली हन्तुम अभ्याययौ कोपाज जरासंधः स यादवम ।।
mahābalaparīvāro magadhādhipatir balī hantum abhyāyayau kopāj jarāsaṃdhaḥ sa yādavam ||
The powerful king of Magadha, surrounded by a great army, approached to kill the Yadava out of anger.

उपेत्य मथुरां सो ऽथ रुरोध मगधेश्वरः अक्षौहिणीभिः सैन्यस्य त्रयोविंशतिभिर वृतः ।।
upetya mathurāṃ so 'tha rurodha magadheśvaraḥ akṣauhiṇībhiḥ sainyasya trayoviṃśatibhir vṛtaḥ ||
Approaching Mathura, the king of Magadha surrounded by twenty-three akshauhinis, began to roar.

निष्क्रम्याल्पपरीवाराव उभौ रामजनार्दनौ युयुधाते समं तस्य बलिनौ बलिसैनिकैः ।।
niṣkramyālpaparīvārāv ubhau rāmajanārdanau yuyudhāte samaṃ tasya balinau balisainikaiḥ ||
Having emerged with a small entourage, both Rama and Janardana fought together against the strong soldiers.

ततो रामश च कृष्णश च चक्राते मतिम उत्तमाम आयुधानां पुराणानाम आदाने मुनिसत्तम ।।
tato rāmaś ca kṛṣṇaś ca cakrāte matim uttamām āyudhānāṃ purāṇānām ādāne munisattama ||
Then Rama and Krishna, with excellent intelligence, took the weapons from the ancient sages.

अनन्तरं हरेः शार्ङ्गं तूणौ चाक्षयसायकौ आकाशाद आगतौ विप्र तथा कौमोदकी गदा ।।
anantaraṃ hareḥ śārṅgaṃ tūṇau cākṣayasāyakau ākāśād āgatau vipra tathā kaumodakī gadā ||
Subsequently, the divine bow of Hari, along with the mighty arrows, and the Kaumodaki mace arrived from the sky, O sage.

हलं च बलभद्रस्य गगनाद आगतं ज्वलत मनसाभिमतं विप्र सौनन्दं मुसलं तथा ।।
halaṃ ca balabhadrasya gaganād āgataṃ jvalat manasābhimataṃ vipra saunandaṃ musalaṃ tathā ||
The plow of Balabhadra, blazing and coming from the sky, and the mace of Saunanda, dear to the mind, also arrived.

ततो युद्धे पराजित्य ससैन्यं मगधाधिपम पुरीं विविशतुर वीराव उभौ रामजनार्दनौ ।।
tato yuddhe parājitya sasainyaṃ magadhādhipam purīṃ viviśatur vīrāv ubhau rāmajanārdanau ||
Then, having defeated the army of the king of Magadha in battle, the two heroes, Rama and Janardana, entered the city.

जिते तस्मिन सुदुर्वृत्ते जरासंधे महामुने जीवमाने गते कृष्णस तं नामन्यत निर्जितम ।।
jite tasmin sudurvṛtte jarāsaṃdhe mahāmune jīvamāne gate kṛṣṇas taṃ nāmanyata nirjitam ||
In that difficult situation, the great sage Jarasandha was defeated, and Krishna, while living, was not considered conquered.

पुनर अप्य आजगामाथ जरासंधो बलान्वितः जितश च रामकृष्णाभ्याम अपक्रान्तो द्विजोत्तम ।।
punar apy ājagāmātha jarāsaṃdho balānvitaḥ jitaś ca rāmakṛṣṇābhyām apakrānto dvijottama ||
Once again, Jarasandha, accompanied by his forces, came, having been defeated by Rama and Krishna, the best of the twice-born.

दश चाष्टौ च संग्रामान एवम अत्यन्तदुर्मदः यदुभिर मागधो राजा चक्रे कृष्णपुरोगमैः ।।
daśa cāṣṭau ca saṃgrāmān evam atyantadurmadaḥ yadubhir māgadho rājā cakre kṛṣṇapurogamaiḥ ||
In ten and eight battles, the exceedingly proud king of Magadha fought with the Yadavas led by Krishna.

सर्वेष्व एतेषु युद्धेषु यादवैः स पराजितः अपक्रान्तो जरासंधः स्वल्पसैन्यैर बलाधिकः ।।
sarveṣv eteṣu yuddheṣu yādavaiḥ sa parājitaḥ apakrānto jarāsaṃdhaḥ svalpasainyair balādhikaḥ ||
In all these battles, he was defeated by the Yadavas, having been driven back by a small army despite his greater strength.

तद बलं यादवानां तैर अजितं यद अनेकशः तत तु संनिधिमाहात्म्यं विष्णोर अंशस्य चक्रिणः ।।
tad balaṃ yādavānāṃ tair ajitaṃ yad anekaśaḥ tat tu saṃnidhimāhātmyaṃ viṣṇor aṃśasya cakriṇaḥ ||
That strength of the Yadavas, which was not conquered despite many attempts, is indeed the greatness of the presence of Vishnu, the wielder of the discus.

मनुष्यधर्मशीलस्य लीला सा जगतः पतेः अस्त्राण्य अनेकरूपाणि यद अरातिषु मुञ्चति ।।
manuṣyadharmaśīlasya līlā sā jagataḥ pateḥ astrāṇy anekarūpāṇi yad arātiṣu muñcati ||
The playful activities of the Lord of the universe are like the actions of a righteous human; He releases various weapons against the enemies.

मनसैव जगत्सृष्टिं संहारं च करोति यः तस्यारिपक्षक्षपणे कियान उद्यमविस्तरः ।।
manasaiva jagatsṛṣṭiṃ saṃhāraṃ ca karoti yaḥ tasyāripakṣakṣapaṇe kiyān udyamavistaraḥ ||
He who creates and destroys the universe with his mind, how extensive is his effort in vanquishing the enemy's side?

तथापि ये मनुष्याणां धर्मास तदनुवर्तनम कुर्वन बलवता संधिं हीनैर युद्धं करोत्य असौ ।।
tathāpi ye manuṣyāṇāṃ dharmās tadanuvartanam kurvan balavatā saṃdhiṃ hīnair yuddhaṃ karoty asau ||
However, he who follows the path of righteousness among humans, even when strong, makes peace with the weak and engages in battle.

साम चोपप्रदानं च तथा भेदं प्रदर्शयन करोति दण्डपातं च क्वचिद एव पलायनम ।।
sāma copapradānaṃ ca tathā bhedaṃ pradarśayan karoti daṇḍapātaṃ ca kvacid eva palāyanam ||
He demonstrates peace and conflict, and sometimes even retreats in the face of punishment.

मनुष्यदेहिनां चेष्टाम इत्य एवम अनुवर्ततः लीला जगत्पतेस तस्य छन्दतः संप्रवर्तते ।।
manuṣyadehināṃ ceṣṭām ity evam anuvartataḥ līlā jagatpates tasya chandataḥ saṃpravartate ||
The actions of those with human bodies follow this principle; the play of the Lord of the universe unfolds according to this rhythm.
