Then Krishna, on the royal road, saw a hunchbacked woman approaching, in the bloom of youth.

Krishna said to her, 'Who is this applying the unguent? It is indeed true that she is taken away by the eyes of the moon-like one.'

She, filled with affection, spoke to Hari, 'This is what the hunchback Kubja said, compelled by the strength of the sight.'

O beloved, why do you not know who is being engaged by Kansa? She is renowned for her unguent work.

Indeed, there is no other paste for Kansa's pleasure; I am indeed the vessel of his grace and wealth.

sugandham etad rājārhaṃ ruciraṃ rucirānane āvayor gātrasadṛśaṃ dīyatām anulepanam ||
This fragrant one, worthy of a king, is beautiful and pleasing; let it be applied to your bodies, resembling each other.

Hearing this, she said, 'Let her be taken in,' and she lovingly applied the ointment suitable for both.

bhakticchedānuliptāṅgau tatas tau puruṣarṣabhau sendracāpau virājetāṃ sitakṛṣṇāv ivāmbudau ||
Then, those two excellent men, adorned with bows, shone like the white and black clouds.

tatas tāṃ cibuke śaurir ullāpanavidhānavit utpāṭya tolayām āsa dvyaṅgulenāgrapāṇinā ||
Then, the valiant one, skilled in the art of lifting, lifted her by the chin with his two fingers.

cakarṣa padbhyāṃ ca tadā ṛjutvaṃ keśavo 'nayat tataḥ sā ṛjutāṃ prāptā yoṣitām abhavad varā ||
Then, Keshava pulled her up from the ground, and she became straight, thus she became the best among women.

vilāsalalitaṃ prāha premagarbhabharālasam vastre pragṛhya govindaṃ vraja gehaṃ mameti vai ||
With a playful charm, she said, 'O Govinda, I will go to my home in Vraja.'

The Lord, laughing, released her, saying, 'You will be in the house of your husband,' and seeing Rama's face, he laughed loudly.

bhakticchedānuliptāṅgau nīlapītāmbarau ca tau dhanuḥśālāṃ tato yātau citramālyopaśobhitau ||
Both of them, adorned with blue and yellow garments, entered the archery hall, embellished with beautiful garlands.

āyogavaṃ dhanūratnaṃ tābhyāṃ pṛṣṭais tu rakṣibhiḥ ākhyāte sahasā kṛṣṇo gṛhītvāpūrayad dhanuḥ ||
Then, when questioned by the guardians, Krishna, seizing the bow, suddenly filled it with arrows.

ततः पूरयता तेन भज्यमानं बलाद धनुः चकार सुमहाशब्दं मथुरा येन पूरिता ।।
tataḥ pūrayatā tena bhajyamānaṃ balād dhanuḥ cakāra sumahāśabdaṃ mathurā yena pūritā ||
Then, while being filled with strength, the bow made a tremendous sound, by which Mathura was filled.

anuyuktau tatas tau tu bhagne dhanuṣi rakṣibhiḥ rakṣisainyaṃ nikṛtyobhau niṣkrāntau kārmukālayāt ||
Then, both of them, having been directed, broke the bow with the guardians and exited the archery hall.

akrūrāgamavṛttāntam upalabhya tathā dhanuḥ bhagnaṃ śrutvātha kaṃso 'pi prāha cāṇūramuṣṭikau ||
Having learned about Akrura's arrival and hearing that the bow was broken, Kansa then spoke to Chanura and Mushtika.

gopāladārakau prāptau bhavadbhyāṃ tau mamāgrataḥ mallayuddhe nihantavyau mama prāṇaharau hi tau ||
These two Gopala boys have come before you; they must be killed in the wrestling match, for they are indeed the ones who will take my life.

niyuddhe tadvināśena bhavadbhyāṃ toṣito hy aham dāsyāmy abhimatān kāmān nānyathaitan mahābalau ||
In battle, by their destruction, I shall be pleased with you, and I will grant you the desires you wish for; there is no other way for these mighty ones.

न्यायतो ऽन्यायतो वापि भवद्भ्यां तौ ममाहितौ हन्तव्यौ तद्वधाद राज्यं सामान्यं वो भविष्यति ।।
nyāyato 'nyāyato vāpi bhavadbhyāṃ tau mamāhitau hantavyau tadvadhād rājyaṃ sāmānyaṃ vo bhaviṣyati ||
Whether justly or unjustly, these two are my enemies; they must be killed, and from their death, your kingdom will be established.

इत्य आदिश्य स तौ मल्लौ ततश चाहूय हस्तिपम प्रोवाचोच्चैस त्वया मल्लसमाजद्वारि कुञ्जरः ।।
ity ādiśya sa tau mallau tataś cāhūya hastipam provācoccais tvayā mallasamājadvāri kuñjaraḥ ||
Thus instructing, he called the elephant and loudly spoke to him at the entrance of the wrestling arena.

स्थाप्यः कुवलयापीडस तेन तौ गोपदारकौ घातनीयौ नियुद्धाय रङ्गद्वारम उपागतौ ।।
sthāpyaḥ kuvalayāpīḍas tena tau gopadārakau ghātanīyau niyuddhāya raṅgadvāram upāgatau ||
The two cowherd boys, having been placed there, were brought to the arena for battle by the lotus-eyed one.

तम अप्य आज्ञाप्य दृष्ट्वा च मञ्चान सर्वान उपाकृतान आसन्नमरणः कंसः सूर्योदयम उदैक्षत ।।
tam apy ājñāpya dṛṣṭvā ca mañcān sarvān upākṛtān āsannamaraṇaḥ kaṃsaḥ sūryodayam udaikṣata ||
Seeing him, Kansa, who was near death, commanded all the platforms to be prepared and looked towards the sunrise.

tataḥ samastamañceṣu nāgaraḥ sa tadā janaḥ rājamañceṣu cārūḍhāḥ saha bhṛtyair mahībhṛtaḥ ||
Then, the people were all seated on the platforms, and the king was adorned, along with his attendants.

mallaprāśnikavargaś ca raṅgamadhyasamīpataḥ kṛtaḥ kaṃsena kaṃso 'pi tuṅgamañce vyavasthitaḥ ||
The group of wrestlers was arranged near the center of the arena, and Kansa himself was seated on a high platform.

antaḥpurāṇāṃ mañcāś ca tathānye parikalpitāḥ anye ca vāramukhyānām anye nāgarayoṣitām ||
The inner chambers and platforms were also arranged, as well as others for the chief of the warriors and the city women.

nandagopādayo gopā mañceṣv anyeṣv avasthitāḥ akrūravasudevau ca mañcaprānte vyavasthitau ||
The cowherds, including Nanda and others, are situated on the platforms, while Akrura and Vasudeva are positioned at the edge of the platform.

nāgarīyoṣitāṃ madhye devakī putragṛddhinī antakāle 'pi putrasya drakṣyāmi ruciraṃ mukham ||
Among the city women, Devaki, who has taken her son, I will see the beautiful face of my son even at the end of time.

As the instruments play and the drums sound, the world is filled with a tumultuous uproar, stirred by the fist.

Having killed the Kuvalayapida, urged by the elephant rider, with my body smeared in intoxication, I wield the mighty elephant tusk as a weapon.

Just as lions among deer, Balabhadra and Janardana enter the grand arena with pride and playfulness.

hāhākāro mahāñ jajñe sarvamañceṣv anantaram kṛṣṇo 'yaṃ balabhadro 'yam iti lokasya vismayāt ||
A great uproar arose, and immediately Krishna, the mighty Balabhadra, was born, causing wonder in the world.

सो ऽयं येन हता घोरा पूतना सा निशाचरी क्षिप्तं तु शकटं येन भग्नौ च यमलार्जुनौ ।।
so 'yaṃ yena hatā ghorā pūtanā sā niśācarī kṣiptaṃ tu śakaṭaṃ yena bhagnau ca yamalārjunau ||
This is the one by whom the fearsome Putana, the night-walker, was killed, and by whom the cart was thrown and the Yamalarjuna were broken.

सो ऽयं यः कालियं नागं ननर्तारुह्य बालकः धृतो गोवर्धनो येन सप्तरात्रं महागिरिः ।।
so 'yaṃ yaḥ kāliyaṃ nāgaṃ nanartāruhya bālakaḥ dhṛto govardhano yena saptarātraṃ mahāgiriḥ ||
This is the one who danced on the serpent Kaliya as a child, and by whom the great mountain Govardhana was lifted for seven nights.

अरिष्टो धेनुकः केशी लीलयैव महात्मना निहता येन दुर्वृत्ता दृश्यतां सो ऽयम अच्युतः ।।
ariṣṭo dhenukaḥ keśī līlayaiva mahātmanā nihatā yena durvṛttā dṛśyatāṃ so 'yam acyutaḥ ||
Ariṣṭa, Dhenuka, and Kesi were killed by him, the great soul, in his playful pastimes; thus, he is the infallible one.

अयं चास्य महाबाहुर बलभद्रो ऽग्रजो ऽग्रतः प्रयाति लीलया योषिन्मनोनयननन्दनः ।।
ayaṃ cāsya mahābāhur balabhadro 'grajo 'grataḥ prayāti līlayā yoṣinmanonayananandanaḥ ||
This is the one with mighty arms, Balabhadra, the elder brother, who playfully goes ahead, the delight of the minds of women.

अयं स कथ्यते प्राज्ञैः पुराणार्थावलोकिभिः गोपालो यादवं वंशं मग्नम अभ्युद्धरिष्यति ।।
ayaṃ sa kathyate prājñaiḥ purāṇārthāvalokibhiḥ gopālo yādavaṃ vaṃśaṃ magnam abhyuddhariṣyati ||
This is said by the wise, who observe the meaning of the Puranas: the cowherd will surely uplift the Yadava lineage, which is submerged.

अयं स सर्वभूतस्य विष्णोर अखिलजन्मनः अवतीर्णो महीम अंशो नूनं भारहरो भुवः ।।
ayaṃ sa sarvabhūtasya viṣṇor akhilajanmanaḥ avatīrṇo mahīm aṃśo nūnaṃ bhāraharo bhuvaḥ ||
This is indeed a portion of Vishnu, who has descended to the earth for the sake of all beings, certainly a burden-bearer of the world.

इत्य एवं वर्णिते पौरै रामे कृष्णे च तत्क्षणात ।। उरस तताप देवक्याः स्नेहस्नुतपयोधरम ।।
ity evaṃ varṇite paurai rāme kṛṣṇe ca tatkṣaṇāt || uras tatāpa devakyāḥ snehasnutapayodharam ||
Thus described by the people, at that moment, the bosom of Devaki was warmed by the affectionate milk of her son, Rama and Krishna.

mahotsavam ivāsādya putrānanavilokanam yuveva vasudevo 'bhūd vihāyābhyāgatāṃ jarām ||
Having celebrated a great festival, Vasudeva was indeed youthful, having left behind old age and its arrival.

The pair of wide-eyed women in the royal harem did not cease to gaze at him.

Look at the face of Krishna, which is more radiant than the red lotus, adorned with the sweat of the elephant battle.

Where is the creator of all beings, the eternal one? Where does this tongue of a human being say 'son'?

jagad etaj jagannātha saṃbhūtam akhilaṃ yataḥ kayā yuktyā vinā māyāṃ so 'smattaḥ saṃbhaviṣyati ||
This universe, O Lord of the Universe, is born from you. By what means will it come into existence without illusion?

In which is established all this world, both stationary and moving? How is that being born from a womb?

sa tvaṃ prasīda parameśvara pāhi viśvam aṃśāvatārakaraṇair na mamāsi putraḥ ābrahmapādapam ayaṃ jagad etad īśa tvatto vimohayasi kiṃ parameśvarātman ||
O Supreme Being, be gracious and protect the universe. You are not my son, but this world is yours. O Lord, do you not bewilder the supreme soul?

māyāvimohitadṛśā tanayo mameti kaṃsād bhayaṃ kṛtam apāstabhayātitīvram nīto 'si gokulam ito 'tibhayākulasya vṛddhiṃ gato 'si mama nāsti mamatvam īśa ||
My son, who is deluded by illusion, has been taken away from Kansa due to extreme fear. You have gone to Gokula, and there is no attachment for me, O Lord.

कर्माणि रुद्रमरुदश्विशतक्रतूनां साध्यानि यानि न भवन्ति निरीक्षितानि त्वं विष्णुर ईश जगताम उपकारहेतोः प्राप्तो ऽसि नः परिगतं विगतो हि मोहः ।।
karmāṇi rudramarudaśviśatakratūnāṃ sādhyāni yāni na bhavanti nirīkṣitāni tvaṃ viṣṇur īśa jagatām upakārahetoḥ prāpto 'si naḥ parigataṃ vigato hi mohaḥ ||
The actions of Rudra, Marut, and the hundred sacrifices are those that do not manifest when unobserved. You, Vishnu, have come for the benefit of the universe; we are free from delusion.
