प्रदोषार्धे कदाचित तु रासासक्ते जनार्दने त्रासयन समदो गोष्ठम अरिष्टः समुपागतः ।।
pradoṣārdhe kadācit tu rāsāsakte janārdane trāsayan samado goṣṭham ariṣṭaḥ samupāgataḥ ||
Once, at dusk, when Janardana was engaged in a dance, the fierce demon Ariṣṭa approached, frightening the peaceful assembly.

सतोयतोयदच्छायस तीक्ष्णशृङ्गो ऽर्कलोचनः खुराग्रपातैर अत्यर्थं दारयन वसुधातलम ।।
satoyatoyadacchāyas tīkṣṇaśṛṅgo 'rkalocanaḥ khurāgrapātair atyarthaṃ dārayan vasudhātalam ||
With sharp horns and fierce eyes, he caused great destruction to the earth with his powerful hoof strikes.

लेलिहानः सनिष्पेषं जिह्वयौष्ठौ पुनः पुनः संरम्भाविद्धलाङ्गूलः कठिनस्कन्धबन्धनः ।।
lelihānaḥ saniṣpeṣaṃ jihvayauṣṭhau punaḥ punaḥ saṃrambhāviddhalāṅgūlaḥ kaṭhinaskandhabandhanaḥ ||
The one who licks, with a pressed tongue and lips, repeatedly, is bound by the fierce grip of the strong shoulders.

उदग्रककुदाभोगः प्रमाणाद दुरतिक्रमः विण्मूत्रलिप्तपृष्ठाङ्गो गवाम उद्वेगकारकः ।।
udagrakakudābhogaḥ pramāṇād duratikramaḥ viṇmūtraliptapṛṣṭhāṅgo gavām udvegakārakaḥ ||
The one with a fierce back and a body smeared with urine, is difficult to overcome and causes distress to the cows.

प्रलम्बकण्ठो ऽतिमुखस तरुघाताङ्किताननः पातयन स गवां गर्भान दैत्यो वृषभरूपधृक ।।
pralambakaṇṭho 'timukhas tarughātāṅkitānanaḥ pātayan sa gavāṃ garbhān daityo vṛṣabharūpadhṛk ||
The demon with a long neck, having a face marked by the swift strike of trees, causes the cows to fall into the wombs.

The fierce one, who always roams in the forests, is a tormentor of the ascetics.

ततस तम अतिघोराक्षम अवेक्ष्यातिभयातुराः गोपा गोपस्त्रियश चैव कृष्ण कृष्णेति चुक्रुशुः ।।
tatas tam atighorākṣam avekṣyātibhayāturāḥ gopā gopastriyaś caiva kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇeti cukruśuḥ ||
Then, seeing that extremely fearsome demon, the cowherds and their women cried out, 'Krishna! Krishna!' in great fear.

सिंहनादं ततश चक्रे तलशब्दं च केशवः तच्छब्दश्रवणाच चासौ दामोदरमुखं ययौ ।।
siṃhanādaṃ tataś cakre talaśabdaṃ ca keśavaḥ tacchabdaśravaṇāc cāsau dāmodaramukhaṃ yayau ||
Then Keshava, hearing the lion's roar and the sound of the earth, went towards the mouth of Damodara.

अग्रन्यस्तविषाणाग्रः कृष्णकुक्षिकृतेक्षणः अभ्यधावत दुष्टात्मा कृष्णं वृषभदानवः ।।
agranyastaviṣāṇāgraḥ kṛṣṇakukṣikṛtekṣaṇaḥ abhyadhāvata duṣṭātmā kṛṣṇaṃ vṛṣabhadānavaḥ ||
The wicked demon, with his horns raised, rushed towards Krishna, who was in the womb of Devaki.

आयान्तं दैत्यवृषभं दृष्ट्वा कृष्णो महाबलः न चचाल ततः स्थानाद अवज्ञास्मितलीलया ।।
āyāntaṃ daityavṛṣabhaṃ dṛṣṭvā kṛṣṇo mahābalaḥ na cacāla tataḥ sthānād avajñāsmitalīlayā ||
Seeing the approaching demon bull, the mighty Krishna did not move from his place due to his playful disdain.

आसन्नं चैव जग्राह ग्राहवन मधुसूदनः जघान जानुना कुक्षौ विषाणग्रहणाचलम ।।
āsannaṃ caiva jagrāha grāhavan madhusūdanaḥ jaghāna jānunā kukṣau viṣāṇagrahaṇācalam ||
Madhusudana seized the approaching one and struck him with his knee, causing the demon to lose his balance.

तस्य दर्पबलं भङ्क्त्वा गृहीतस्य विषाणयोः अपीडयद अरिष्टस्य कण्ठं क्लिन्नम इवाम्बरम ।।
tasya darpabalaṃ bhaṅktvā gṛhītasya viṣāṇayoḥ apīḍayad ariṣṭasya kaṇṭhaṃ klinnam ivāmbaram ||
Having broken the pride of that demon, he pressed the throat of the captured one, as if it were drenched in water.

उत्पाट्य शृङ्गम एकं तु तेनैवाताडयत ततः ममार सहसा दैत्यो मुखाच छोणितम उद्वमन ।।
utpāṭya śṛṅgam ekaṃ tu tenaivātāḍayat tataḥ mamāra sahasā daityo mukhāc choṇitam udvaman ||
Having uprooted one horn, he struck it with that very horn; then the demon suddenly died, spewing blood from his mouth.

तुष्टुवुर निहते तस्मिन दैत्ये गोपा जनार्दनम जम्भे हते सहस्राक्षं पुरा देवगणा यथा ।।
tuṣṭuvur nihate tasmin daitye gopā janārdanam jambhe hate sahasrākṣaṃ purā devagaṇā yathā ||
The cowherds praised Janardana when that demon was slain, just as the gods praised the thousand-eyed one when Jambha was killed.
