mahe pratihate śakro maitreyātiruṣānvitaḥ saṃvartakaṃ nāma gaṇaṃ toyadānām athābravīt ||
When Indra was greatly troubled, accompanied by Maitreyā and others, he spoke to the group named Saṃvartaka of the water-givers.

भो भो मेघा निशम्यैतद वचनं वदतो मम आज्ञानन्तरम एवाशु क्रियताम अविचारितम ।।
bho bho meghā niśamyaitad vacanaṃ vadato mama ājñānantaram evāśu kriyatām avicāritam ||
O clouds, upon hearing this word of mine, let it be done immediately without any hesitation after my command.

नन्दगोपः सुदुर्बुद्धिर गोपैर अन्यैः सहायवान कृष्णाश्रयबलाध्मातो महभङ्गम अचीकरत ।।
nandagopaḥ sudurbuddhir gopair anyaiḥ sahāyavān kṛṣṇāśrayabalādhmāto mahabhaṅgam acīkarat ||
Nandagopa, of limited intellect, with the help of other cowherds, caused a great disturbance due to the strength derived from Krishna's shelter.

आजीवो यः परस तेषां गोपत्वस्य च कारणम ता गावो वृष्टिपातेन पीड्यन्तां वचनान मम ।।
ājīvo yaḥ paras teṣāṃ gopatvasya ca kāraṇam tā gāvo vṛṣṭipātena pīḍyantāṃ vacanān mama ||
Let those cows, which are the cause of their cowherd status, suffer from the rain as per my words.

aham apy adriśṛṅgābhaṃ tuṅgam āruhya vāraṇam sāhāyyaṃ vaḥ kariṣyāmi vāyvambūtsargayojitam ||
I shall provide assistance to you, having ascended the lofty mountain resembling a horn.

इत्य आज्ञप्ताः सुरेन्द्रेण मुमुचुस ते बलाहकाः वातवर्षं महाभीमम अभावाय गवां द्विज ।।
ity ājñaptāḥ surendreṇa mumucus te balāhakāḥ vātavarṣaṃ mahābhīmam abhāvāya gavāṃ dvija ||
Thus commanded by the lord of the gods, those powerful beings released the great storm to prevent the loss of the cows.

ततः क्षणेन धरणी ककुभो ऽम्बरम एव च एकं धारामहासारपूरणेनाभवन मुने ।।
tataḥ kṣaṇena dharaṇī kakubho 'mbaram eva ca ekaṃ dhārāmahāsārapūraṇenābhavan mune ||
Then, in an instant, the earth and the sky were filled with a single stream of water, O sage.

विद्युल्लताकषाघातत्रस्तैर इव घनैर घनम नादापूरितदिक्चक्रैर धारासारम अपात्यत ।।
vidyullatākaṣāghātatrastair iva ghanair ghanam nādāpūritadikcakrair dhārāsāram apātyata ||
Like clouds struck by lightning, the dense rain poured down, filling the earth with streams of water.

अन्धकारीकृते लोके वर्षद्भिर अनिशं घनैः अधश चोर्ध्वं च तिर्यक च जगद आप्यम इवाभवत ।।
andhakārīkṛte loke varṣadbhir aniśaṃ ghanaiḥ adhaś cordhvaṃ ca tiryak ca jagad āpyam ivābhavat ||
In the world made dark, the incessant rains fell thickly, and the universe appeared to be enveloped in all directions.

गावस तु तेन पतता वर्षवातेन वेगिना धूताः प्राणाञ जहुः सन्नत्रिकसक्थिशिरोधराः ।।
gāvas tu tena patatā varṣavātena veginā dhūtāḥ prāṇāñ jahuḥ sannatrikasakthiśirodharāḥ ||
The cows, being struck by the force of the rainstorm, lost their lives, along with the beings who bore the burden of their heads.

क्रोडेन वत्सान आक्रम्य तस्थुर अन्या महामुने गावो विवत्साश च कृता वारिपूरेण चापराः ।।
kroḍena vatsān ākramya tasthur anyā mahāmune gāvo vivatsāś ca kṛtā vāripūreṇa cāparāḥ ||
The other great sage stood firm, having attacked the calves, and the cows, having given birth, were also made to drink water.

वत्साश च दीनवदना पवनाकम्पिकन्धराः त्राहि त्राहीत्य अल्पशब्दाः कृष्णम ऊचुर इवार्तकाः ।।
vatsāś ca dīnavadanā pavanākampikandharāḥ trāhi trāhīty alpaśabdāḥ kṛṣṇam ūcur ivārtakāḥ ||
The calves, with faces like those of the distressed, cried out in faint voices, 'O Krishna, protect us!'

ततस तद गोकुलं सर्वं गोगोपीगोपसंकुलम अतीवार्तं हरिर दृष्ट्वा मैत्रेयाचिन्तयत तदा ।।
tatas tad gokulaṃ sarvaṃ gogopīgopasaṃkulam atīvārtaṃ harir dṛṣṭvā maitreyācintayat tadā ||
Then, seeing all of Gokula, filled with cows and gopis, in great distress, Hari thought deeply at that moment.

एतत कृतं महेन्द्रेण महभङ्गविरोधिना तद एतद अखिलं गोष्ठं त्रातव्यम अधुना मया ।।
etat kṛtaṃ mahendreṇa mahabhaṅgavirodhinā tad etad akhilaṃ goṣṭhaṃ trātavyam adhunā mayā ||
This was done by Mahendra, opposing the great disturbance; therefore, this entire herd must now be protected by me.

इमम अद्रिम अहं धैर्याद उत्पाट्योरुशिलाघनम धारयिष्यामि गोष्ठस्य पृथुच्छत्रम इवोपरि ।।
imam adrim ahaṃ dhairyād utpāṭyoruśilāghanam dhārayiṣyāmi goṣṭhasya pṛthucchatram ivopari ||
I shall hold this mountain, which is heavy like a great stone, with my strength, just as one holds an umbrella over a gathering.

इति कृत्वा मतिं कृष्णो गोवर्धनमहीधरम उत्पाट्यैककरेणैव धारयाम आस लीलया ।।
iti kṛtvā matiṃ kṛṣṇo govardhanamahīdharam utpāṭyaikakareṇaiva dhārayām āsa līlayā ||
Thus thinking, Krishna lifted the Govardhana mountain with one hand, playfully.

गोपांश चाह जगन्नाथः समुत्पाटितभूधरः विशध्वम अत्र सहिताः कृतं वर्षनिवारणम ।।
gopāṃś cāha jagannāthaḥ samutpāṭitabhūdharaḥ viśadhvam atra sahitāḥ kṛtaṃ varṣanivāraṇam ||
O Gopas, the Lord of the Universe has lifted the mountain; let us all gather here to celebrate the cessation of rain.

सुनिवातेषु देशेषु यथाजोषम इहास्यताम प्रविश्यतां न भेतव्यं गिरिपातस्य निर्भयैः ।।
sunivāteṣu deśeṣu yathājoṣam ihāsyatām praviśyatāṃ na bhetavyaṃ giripātasya nirbhayaiḥ ||
In the well-ventilated regions, let this be done according to the season; let us enter without fear of the mountain's descent.

इत्य उक्तास तेन ते गोपा विविशुर गोधनैः सह शकटारोपितैर भाण्डैर गोप्यश चासारपीडिताः ।।
ity uktās tena te gopā viviśur godhanaiḥ saha śakaṭāropitair bhāṇḍair gopyaś cāsārapīḍitāḥ ||
Thus instructed by him, the Gopas entered with their cattle, along with the pots placed on carts, and the Gopis were also tormented.

कृष्णो ऽपि तं दधारैव शैलम अत्यन्तनिश्चलम व्रजौकोवासिभिर हर्षविस्मिताक्षैर निरीक्षितः ।।
kṛṣṇo 'pi taṃ dadhāraiva śailam atyantaniścalam vrajaukovāsibhir harṣavismitākṣair nirīkṣitaḥ ||
Krishna also held that immovable mountain, observed by the cowherds with astonished eyes.

गोपगोपीजनैर हृष्टैः प्रीतिविस्तारितेक्षणैः संस्तूयमानचरितः कृष्णः शैलम अधारयत ।।
gopagopījanair hṛṣṭaiḥ prītivistāritekṣaṇaiḥ saṃstūyamānacaritaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ śailam adhārayat ||
Krishna, praised by the joyful cowherds with affectionate glances, supported the mountain.

सप्तरात्रं महामेघा ववर्षुर नन्दगोकुले इन्द्रेण चोदिता विप्र गोपानां नाशकारिणः ।।
saptarātraṃ mahāmeghā vavarṣur nandagokule indreṇa coditā vipra gopānāṃ nāśakāriṇaḥ ||
For seven nights, the great clouds rained over Nandagokula, urged by Indra, causing destruction to the cowherds.

ततो धृते महाशैले परित्राते च गोकुले मिथ्याप्रतिज्ञो बलभिद वारयाम आस तान घनान ।।
tato dhṛte mahāśaile paritrāte ca gokule mithyāpratijño balabhid vārayām āsa tān ghanān ||
Then, when the great mountain was held up and Gokula was protected, the false-promising Balabhadra restrained those clouds.

व्यभ्रे नभसि देवेन्द्रे वितथात्मवचस्य अथ निष्क्रम्य गोकुलं हृष्टं स्वस्थानं पुनर आगमत ।।
vyabhre nabhasi devendre vitathātmavacasy atha niṣkramya gokulaṃ hṛṣṭaṃ svasthānaṃ punar āgamat ||
When the sky was disturbed by Indra, then Krishna, having left Gokula, returned to his own place, joyful.

मुमोच कृष्णो ऽपि तदा गोवर्धनमहाचलम स्वस्थाने विस्मितमुखैर दृष्टस तैस तु व्रजौकसैः ।।
mumoca kṛṣṇo 'pi tadā govardhanamahācalam svasthāne vismitamukhair dṛṣṭas tais tu vrajaukasaiḥ ||
At that time, Krishna released the great Govardhana mountain, which was seen by the inhabitants of Vraja with astonished faces.
