In the clear sky, the starry sphere shines like the moon, in the company of a yogi.

Gradually, the lakes abandoned their shores, just as wise ones rise above attachments.

The swans, having abandoned the waters of the past, again attained yoga, as if hindered by the endless pains of the misguided.

nibhṛto 'bhavad atyarthaṃ samudraḥ stimitodakaḥ kramāvāptamahāyogo niścalātmā yathā yatiḥ ||
The ocean, restrained, became exceedingly calm, like a yogi with a steady mind who has attained the supreme yoga.

All the waters became exceedingly joyful when the omnipresent Vishnu was known, like the minds of the wise.

The sky became pure, like the mind of a yogi, after the autumn rains had subsided, burning away the burden of sufferings.

The star-lord brought forth the heat generated by the sun's rays, calming the great sorrow born of ego.

nabhaso 'bdān bhuvaḥ paṅkaṃ kāluṣyaṃ cāmbhasaḥ śarat indriyāṇīndriyārthebhyaḥ pratyāhāra ivāharat ||
The sky, the earth, the mire, the impurities of water, and the autumn season, withdraw the senses from their objects like a pratyahara.

prāṇāyāma ivāmbhobhiḥ sarasāṃ kṛtapūrakaiḥ abhyasyate 'nudivasaṃ recakākumbhakādibhiḥ ||
Like the practice of pranayama with water, it is practiced daily with the complete inhalation and techniques like exhalation and kumbhaka.

In the pure constellation, when the time arrived, the cowherds saw the great endeavor of Indra rising.

kṛṣṇas tān utsukān dṛṣṭvā gopān utsavalālasān kautūhalād idaṃ vākyaṃ prāha vṛddhān mahāmatiḥ ||
Seeing the eager cowherds enjoying the festival, Krishna, out of curiosity, spoke this statement to the elders.

ko 'yaṃ śakramaho nāma yena vo harṣa āgataḥ prāha taṃ nandagopaś ca pṛcchantam atisādaram ||
Who is this Shakra, by whose arrival you are filled with joy? Nandagopa asked him with great respect.

meghānāṃ payasāṃ ceśo devarājaḥ śatakratuḥ tena saṃcoditā meghā varṣanty ambumayaṃ rasam ||
The king of the gods, Shatakratu, by his power, causes the clouds to rain the nectar-like essence of water.

The crops produced by the rain sustain us and other beings; we nourish the deities while enjoying their bounty.

kṣīravatya imā gāvo vatsavatyaś ca nirvṛtāḥ tena saṃvardhitaiḥ sasyais tuṣṭāḥ puṣṭā bhavanti vai ||
These cows, rich in milk, and the calves are satisfied; thus, with the nourished crops, they become pleased and prosperous.

nāsasyā nātṛṇā bhūmir na bubhukṣārdito janaḥ dṛśyate yatra dṛśyante vṛṣṭimanto balāhakāḥ ||
Where there is no famine, no drought, and no hungry people, there the strong and mighty are seen enjoying the rain.

bhaumam etat payo dugdhaṃ gobhiḥ sūryasya vāridaḥ parjanyaḥ sarvalokasya bhavāya bhuvi varṣati ||
This earthly milk, the nectar of the sun, rains down from the clouds for the prosperity of all beings on earth.

tasmāt prāvṛṣi rājānaḥ sarve śakraṃ mudā yutāḥ mahaiḥ sureśam arcanti vayam anye ca mānavāḥ ||
Therefore, in the rainy season, all the kings joyfully worship Indra, the great lord of the gods, and we, along with other humans, do so as well.

nandagopasya vacanaṃ śrutvetthaṃ śakrapūjane kopāya tridaśendrasya prāha dāmodaras tadā ||
Upon hearing the words of Nandagopa regarding the worship of Indra, Damodara then spoke in anger to the lord of the three worlds.

We are not farmers, nor merchants, nor do we have cows, O father; we are forest dwellers.

Listen to me about the subjects of logic, the three Vedas, the code of conduct, and the four branches of knowledge.

kṛṣir vaṇijyā tadvac ca tṛtīyaṃ paśupālanam vidyā hy ekā mahābhāga vārtā vṛttitrayāśrayā ||
Agriculture, trade, and thirdly, animal husbandry; indeed, knowledge is one, O fortunate one, based on these three professions.

The livelihood of farmers is trade for merchants; our cows are the supreme livelihood, distinguished by three types of agriculture.

The one who is skilled in knowledge, that is the great deity; it is worthy of worship and also beneficial to him.

A person who enjoys the fruits of another and worships them does not attain beauty in this life or after death.

kṛṣyantāḥ prathitāḥ sīmāḥ sīmāntaṃ ca punar vanam vanāntā girayaḥ sarve te cāsmākaṃ parā gatiḥ ||
The cultivated fields are well-known, and the boundaries return to the forest; all the mountains at the forest's edge are our ultimate destination.

na dvārabandhāvaraṇā na gṛhakṣetriṇas tathā sukhinas tv akhile loke yathā vai cakracāriṇaḥ ||
Neither the barriers of doors nor the householders are the same; the happy ones in the entire world are like the wheel-turners.

श्रूयन्ते गिरयश चामी वने ऽस्मिन कामरूपिणः तत तद रूपं समास्थाय रमन्ते स्वेषु सानुषु ।।
śrūyante girayaś cāmī vane 'smin kāmarūpiṇaḥ tat tad rūpaṃ samāsthāya ramante sveṣu sānuṣu ||
In this forest, the mountains and the trees are heard to be in the form of desire. Taking on various forms, they delight in their own offspring.

यदा चैते ऽपराध्यन्ते तेषां ये काननौकसः तदा सिंहादिरूपैस तान घातयन्ति महीधराः ।।
yadā caite 'parādhyante teṣāṃ ye kānanaukasaḥ tadā siṃhādirūpais tān ghātayanti mahīdharāḥ ||
When these forest dwellers commit offenses, the mountains, taking the form of lions and others, kill them.

giriyajñas tv ayaṃ tasmād goyajñaś ca pravartyatām kim asmākaṃ mahendreṇa gāvaḥ śailāś ca devatāḥ ||
Therefore, let this mountain be a sacrifice to the mountains, and let the cow sacrifice be performed. What of ours can be offered to Mahendra, the cows, the mountains, and the deities?

मन्त्रयज्ञपरा विप्राः सीरयज्ञाश च कर्षकाः गिरिगोयज्ञशीलाश च वयम अद्रिवनाश्रयाः ।।
mantrayajñaparā viprāḥ sīrayajñāś ca karṣakāḥ girigoyajñaśīlāś ca vayam adrivanāśrayāḥ ||
The learned Brahmins are engaged in the sacrifice of mantras, the farmers in the sacrifice of the harvest, and we are those who take refuge in the mountains.

tasmād govardhanaḥ śailo bhavadbhir vividhārhaṇaiḥ arcyatāṃ pūjyatāṃ medhyaṃ paśuṃ hatvā vidhānataḥ ||
Therefore, let Govardhana mountain be worshipped by you with various offerings, and let the sacrificial animal be honored after being killed as prescribed.

sarvaghoṣasya saṃdoho gṛhyatāṃ mā vicāryatām bhojyantāṃ tena vai viprās tathā ye cābhivāñchakāḥ ||
Let the confusion of all sounds be accepted; do not deliberate. Let the Brahmins and those who desire it partake.

When the offerings are made properly and the Brahmins are fed, let the herds of cows go to the place of the autumn flowers.

etan mama mataṃ gopāḥ saṃprītyā kriyate yadi tataḥ kṛtā bhavet prītir gavām adres tathā mama ||
If this is my opinion, O shepherds, let it be done with joy; then there will be affection for the cows and for me.

Hearing these words, Nanda and the others of Vraja, with joyful faces, said, 'Well done, O Brahmin!'.

शोभनं ते मतं वत्स यद एतद भवतोदितम तत करिष्यामहे सर्वं गिरियज्ञः प्रवर्त्यताम ।।
śobhanaṃ te mataṃ vatsa yad etad bhavatoditam tat kariṣyāmahe sarvaṃ giriyajñaḥ pravartyatām ||
O calf, your opinion is beautiful; whatever you have said, we shall do. Let the mountain sacrifice be performed.

antardhānaṃ gate tasmin gopā labdhvā tato varān kṛtvā girimahaṃ goṣṭhaṃ nijam abhyāyayuḥ punaḥ ||
When he disappeared, the cowherds, having obtained boons, again approached their own cowherd community on the mountain.
