गाः पालयन्तौ च पुनः सहितौ बलकेशवौ भ्रममाणौ वने तस्मिन रम्यं तालवनं गतौ ।।
gāḥ pālayantau ca punaḥ sahitau balakeśavau bhramamāṇau vane tasmin ramyaṃ tālavanaṃ gatau ||
While tending the cows, the two, Balakeshava and his companion, wandered in that beautiful forest of palm trees.

तत तु तालवनं नित्यं धेनुको नाम दानवः नृगोमांसकृताहारः सदाध्यास्ते खराकृतिः ।।
tat tu tālavanaṃ nityaṃ dhenuko nāma dānavaḥ nṛgomāṃsakṛtāhāraḥ sadādhyāste kharākṛtiḥ ||
In that palm forest, there lived a demon named Dhenuka, who was a flesh-eater and had the form of an ass.

तत तु तालवनं पक्वफलसंपत्समन्वितम दृष्ट्वा स्पृहान्विता गोपाः फलादाने ऽब्रुवन वचः ।।
tat tu tālavanaṃ pakvaphalasaṃpatsamanvitam dṛṣṭvā spṛhānvitā gopāḥ phalādāne 'bruvan vacaḥ ||
Seeing that palm forest filled with ripe fruits, the cowherds, filled with desire, spoke these words about the fruit offering.

हे राम हे कृष्ण सदा धेनुकेनैष रक्ष्यते भूप्रदेशो यतस तस्मात पक्वानीमानि सन्ति वै ।।
he rāma he kṛṣṇa sadā dhenukenaiṣa rakṣyate bhūpradeśo yatas tasmāt pakvānīmāni santi vai ||
O Rama, O Krishna, this land is always protected by Dhenuka; hence, there are indeed ripe fruits here.

फलानि पश्य तालानां गन्धामोदितदिंशि च वयम एतान्य अभीप्सामः पात्यन्तां यदि रोचते ।।
phalāni paśya tālānāṃ gandhāmoditadiṃśi ca vayam etāny abhīpsāmaḥ pātyantāṃ yadi rocate ||
Behold the fruits of the palms, fragrant and delightful. We desire these; let them fall if it pleases.

इति गोपकुमाराणां श्रुत्वा संकर्षणो वचः कृष्णश च पातयाम आस भुवि तालफलानि वै ।।
iti gopakumārāṇāṃ śrutvā saṃkarṣaṇo vacaḥ kṛṣṇaś ca pātayām āsa bhuvi tālaphalāni vai ||
Thus hearing the words of the cowherd boys, Sankarshana and Krishna caused the palm fruits to fall on the earth.

फलानां पततां शब्दम आकर्ण्य सुदुरासदः आजगाम स दुष्टात्मा कोपाद दैतेयगर्दभः ।।
phalānāṃ patatāṃ śabdam ākarṇya sudurāsadaḥ ājagāma sa duṣṭātmā kopād daiteyagardabhaḥ ||
Hearing the sound of the falling fruits, the wicked Daityas' donkey came there in anger.

पद्भ्याम उभाभ्यां स तदा पश्चिमाभ्यां बली बलम जघानोरसि ताभ्यां च स च तेनाप्य अगृह्यत ।।
padbhyām ubhābhyāṃ sa tadā paścimābhyāṃ balī balam jaghānorasi tābhyāṃ ca sa ca tenāpy agṛhyata ||
With both his feet, he struck the western direction with great strength, and he was not grasped by them.

गृहीत्वा भ्रामणेनैव सो ऽम्बरे गतजीवितम तस्मिन्न एव स चिक्षेप वेगेन तृणराजनि ।।
gṛhītvā bhrāmaṇenaiva so 'mbare gatajīvitam tasminn eva sa cikṣepa vegena tṛṇarājani ||
Having been taken by the Brahmana, he who had lost his life in the sky, then threw him with force into the grass.

ततः फलान्य अनेकानि तालाग्रान निपतन खरः पृथिव्यां पातयाम आस महावातो ऽम्बुदान इव ।।
tataḥ phalāny anekāni tālāgrān nipatan kharaḥ pṛthivyāṃ pātayām āsa mahāvāto 'mbudān iva ||
Then, the fierce wind caused many fruits to fall from the tops of the palms onto the earth, like clouds.

अन्यान अप्य अस्य वै ज्ञातीन आगतान दैत्यगर्दभान कृष्णश चिक्षेप तालाग्रे बलभद्रश च लीलया ।।
anyān apy asya vai jñātīn āgatān daityagardabhān kṛṣṇaś cikṣepa tālāgre balabhadraś ca līlayā ||
Krishna threw down the relatives who had come, the demons and donkeys, with his playful strength.

क्षणेनालंकृता पृथ्वी पक्वैस तालफलैस तथा दैत्यगर्दभदेहैश च मैत्रेय शुशुभे ऽधिकम ।।
kṣaṇenālaṃkṛtā pṛthvī pakvais tālaphalais tathā daityagardabhadehaiś ca maitreya śuśubhe 'dhikam ||
In an instant, the earth adorned with ripe palm fruits and the bodies of the demons appeared more beautiful, O Maitreya.

ततो गावो निराबाधास तस्मिंस तालवने द्विज नवशष्पं सुखं चेरुर यन न भुक्तम अभूत पुरा ।।
tato gāvo nirābādhās tasmiṃs tālavane dvija navaśaṣpaṃ sukhaṃ cerur yan na bhuktam abhūt purā ||
Then, the cows, untroubled, roamed happily in that palm grove, enjoying the fresh grass that had not been eaten before.
