विमुक्तो वसुदेवो ऽपि नन्दस्य शकटं गतः प्रहृष्टं दृष्टवान नन्दं पुत्रो जातो ममेति वै ।।
vimukto vasudevo 'pi nandasya śakaṭaṃ gataḥ prahṛṣṭaṃ dṛṣṭavān nandaṃ putro jāto mameti vai ||
Vasudeva, having been freed, also went to Nanda's cart, joyfully saw Nanda and said, 'My son is born.'

वसुदेवो ऽपि तं प्राह दिष्ट्या दिष्ट्येति सादरम वार्द्धके ऽपि समुत्पन्नस तनयो यत तवाधुना ।।
vasudevo 'pi taṃ prāha diṣṭyā diṣṭyeti sādaram vārddhake 'pi samutpannas tanayo yat tavādhunā ||
Vasudeva also respectfully addressed him, saying, 'By fate, a son has been born to you, even in your old age.'

दत्तो हि वार्षिकः सर्वो भवद्भिर नृपतेः करः यदर्थम आगतास तस्मान नात्र स्थेयं महाधनाः ।।
datto hi vārṣikaḥ sarvo bhavadbhir nṛpateḥ karaḥ yadartham āgatās tasmān nātra stheyaṃ mahādhanāḥ ||
Indeed, all the yearly offerings are in the hands of your majesty, for which they have come here; hence, they should not stay here, O wealthy one.

यदर्थम आगताः कार्यं तन निष्पन्नं किम आस्यते भवद्भिर गम्यतां नन्द तच छीघ्रं निजगोकुलम ।।
yadartham āgatāḥ kāryaṃ tan niṣpannaṃ kim āsyate bhavadbhir gamyatāṃ nanda tac chīghraṃ nijagokulam ||
For what purpose have they come? The work is complete; why delay? Let them go quickly to their own Gokula.

ममापि बालकस तत्र रोहिणीप्रसवो हि यः स रक्षणीयो भवता यथायं तनयो निजः ।।
mamāpi bālakas tatra rohiṇīprasavo hi yaḥ sa rakṣaṇīyo bhavatā yathāyaṃ tanayo nijaḥ ||
Even my child, who is born of Rohini, is to be protected by you, just like your own son.

इत्य उक्ताः प्रययुर गोपा नन्दगोपपुरोगमाः शकटारोपितैर भाण्डैः करं दत्त्वा महाबलाः ।।
ity uktāḥ prayayur gopā nandagopapurogamāḥ śakaṭāropitair bhāṇḍaiḥ karaṃ dattvā mahābalāḥ ||
Thus instructed, the cowherds of Nandagopa set out, giving their hands to the carts laden with goods.

वसतां गोकुले तेषां पूतना बालघातिनी सुप्तं कृष्णम उपादाय रात्रौ तस्मै ददौ स्तनम ।।
vasatāṃ gokule teṣāṃ pūtanā bālaghātinī suptaṃ kṛṣṇam upādāya rātrau tasmai dadau stanam ||
While residing in Gokula, Putana, the killer of infants, took the sleeping Krishna and offered her breast to him at night.

यस्मै यस्मै स्तनं रात्रौ पूतना संप्रयच्छति तस्य तस्य क्षणेनाङ्गं बालकस्योपहन्यते ।।
yasmai yasmai stanaṃ rātrau pūtanā saṃprayacchati tasya tasya kṣaṇenāṅgaṃ bālakasyopahanyate ||
To whomsoever Putana offers her breast at night, that child's body is harmed in an instant.

कृष्णस तस्याः स्तनं गाढं कराभ्याम अतिपीडितम गृहीत्वा प्राणसहितं पपौ कोपसमन्वितः ।।
kṛṣṇas tasyāḥ stanaṃ gāḍhaṃ karābhyām atipīḍitam gṛhītvā prāṇasahitaṃ papau kopasamanvitaḥ ||
Krishna, having seized her breast, which was tightly pressed by her hands, drank her life force, filled with anger.

सा विमुक्तमहारावा विच्छिन्नस्नायुबन्धना पपात पूतना भूमौ म्रियमाणातिभीषणा ।।
sā vimuktamahārāvā vicchinnasnāyubandhanā papāta pūtanā bhūmau mriyamāṇātibhīṣaṇā ||
She, freed from the great bonds, fell to the ground, her sinews severed, terrifying as she was dying.

तन्नादश्रुतिसंत्रासात प्रबुद्धास ते व्रजौकसः ददृशुः पूतनोत्सङ्गे कृष्णं तां च निपातिताम ।।
tannādaśrutisaṃtrāsāt prabuddhās te vrajaukasaḥ dadṛśuḥ pūtanotsaṅge kṛṣṇaṃ tāṃ ca nipātitām ||
Frightened by that sound, the wise inhabitants of Vraja saw Krishna along with the fallen Putana.

आदाय कृष्णं संत्रस्ता यशोदापि द्विजोत्तम गोपुच्छं भ्राम्य हस्तेन बालदोषम अपाकरोत ।।
ādāya kṛṣṇaṃ saṃtrastā yaśodāpi dvijottama gopucchaṃ bhrāmya hastena bāladoṣam apākarot ||
Taking Krishna in her arms, even Yashoda, the best of the twice-born, with her hand, removed the fault of the child by circling the cow's tail.

गोपुरीषम उपादाय नन्दगोपो ऽपि मस्तके कृष्णस्य प्रददौ रक्षां कुर्वंश चैतद उदीरयन ।।
gopurīṣam upādāya nandagopo 'pi mastake kṛṣṇasya pradadau rakṣāṃ kurvaṃś caitad udīrayan ||
Nandagopa, taking the cow's ear, placed it on Krishna's head, while he was performing this protection.

रक्षतु त्वाम अशेषाणां भूतानां प्रभवो हरिः यस्य नाभिसमुद्भूतपङ्कजाद अभवज जगत ।।
rakṣatu tvām aśeṣāṇāṃ bhūtānāṃ prabhavo hariḥ yasya nābhisamudbhūtapaṅkajād abhavaj jagat ||
May Hari, the Lord of all beings, protect you, from whom the universe arose from the lotus that emerged from his navel.

येन दंष्ट्राग्रविधृता धारयत्य अवनी जगत वराहरूपधृग देवः स त्वां रक्षतु केशवः ।।
yena daṃṣṭrāgravidhṛtā dhārayaty avanī jagat varāharūpadhṛg devaḥ sa tvāṃ rakṣatu keśavaḥ ||
May the Lord in the form of Varaha, who holds the earth with his tusks, protect you, O Keshava.

नखाङ्कुरविनिर्भिन्नवैरिवक्षःस्थलो विभुः नृसिंहरूपी सर्वत्र स त्वां रक्षतु केशवः ।।
nakhāṅkuravinirbhinnavairivakṣaḥsthalo vibhuḥ nṛsiṃharūpī sarvatra sa tvāṃ rakṣatu keśavaḥ ||
May the Lord in the form of Narasimha, who tears apart the enemy's chest with his nails, protect you everywhere, O Keshava.

वामनो रक्षतु सदा भवन्तं यः क्षणाद अभूत त्रिविक्रमक्रमाक्रान्तत्रैलोक्यः स्फुरदायुधः ।।
vāmano rakṣatu sadā bhavantaṃ yaḥ kṣaṇād abhūt trivikramakramākrāntatrailokyaḥ sphuradāyudhaḥ ||
May Vamana, who appeared in a moment and whose steps encompassed the three worlds, always protect you, O Keshava.

शिरस ते पातु गोविन्दः कण्ठं रक्षतु केशवः गुह्यं सजठरं विष्णुर जङ्घे पादौ जनार्दनः ।।
śiras te pātu govindaḥ kaṇṭhaṃ rakṣatu keśavaḥ guhyaṃ sajaṭharaṃ viṣṇur jaṅghe pādau janārdanaḥ ||
May Govinda protect your head, Keshava guard your throat, and Vishnu, the hidden one, protect your thighs, while Janardana guards your feet.

मुखं बाहू प्रबाहू च मनः सर्वेन्द्रियाणि च रक्षत्व अव्याहतैश्वर्यस तव नारायणो ऽव्ययः ।।
mukhaṃ bāhū prabāhū ca manaḥ sarvendriyāṇi ca rakṣatv avyāhataiśvaryas tava nārāyaṇo 'vyayaḥ ||
May your face, arms, mind, and all senses be protected by the imperishable Narayana, who is the source of unbroken power.

शार्ङ्गचक्रगदापाणेः शङ्खनादहताः क्षयम गच्छन्तु प्रेतकूष्माण्डराक्षसा ये तवाहिताः ।।
śārṅgacakragadāpāṇeḥ śaṅkhanādahatāḥ kṣayam gacchantu pretakūṣmāṇḍarākṣasā ye tavāhitāḥ ||
Let the Rakshasas, who are your enemies, perish, struck by the sound of the conch, wielding the bow, disc, and mace.

त्वां पातु दिक्षु वैकुण्ठो विदिक्षु मधुसूदनः हृषीकेशो ऽम्बरे भूमौ रक्षतु त्वां महीधरः ।।
tvāṃ pātu dikṣu vaikuṇṭho vidikṣu madhusūdanaḥ hṛṣīkeśo 'mbare bhūmau rakṣatu tvāṃ mahīdharaḥ ||
May Vaikuntha protect you in all directions, may Madhusudana protect you in all realms, may Hrishikesha protect you in the sky, and may the mountain protect you on earth.

एवं कृतस्वस्त्ययनो नन्दगोपेन बालकः शायितः शकटस्याधो बालपर्यङ्किकातले ।।
evaṃ kṛtasvastyayano nandagopena bālakaḥ śāyitaḥ śakaṭasyādho bālaparyaṅkikātale ||
Thus, after performing the auspicious rites, the child was laid down by Nandagopa beneath the cart on the bed of soft grass.

ते च गोपा महद दृष्ट्वा पूतनायाः कलेवरम मृतायाः परमं त्रासं विस्मयं च तदा ययुः ।।
te ca gopā mahad dṛṣṭvā pūtanāyāḥ kalevaram mṛtāyāḥ paramaṃ trāsaṃ vismayaṃ ca tadā yayuḥ ||
Seeing the lifeless body of Putana, the cowherds were filled with great fear and astonishment.
