कंसस ततौद्विग्नमनाः प्राह सर्वान महासुरान प्रलम्बकेशिप्रमुखान आहूयासुरपुंगवान ।।
kaṃsas tataudvignamanāḥ prāha sarvān mahāsurān pralambakeśipramukhān āhūyāsurapuṃgavān ||
Kansa, then troubled in mind, spoke to all the great demons, calling the prominent ones like Pralambaka and Kesi.

हे प्रलम्ब महाबाहो केशिन धेनुक पूतने अरिष्टाद्यैस तथा चान्यैः श्रूयतां वचनं मम ।।
he pralamba mahābāho keśin dhenuka pūtane ariṣṭādyais tathā cānyaiḥ śrūyatāṃ vacanaṃ mama ||
O Pralamba, mighty-armed one, listen to my words along with Keshin, Dhenuka, and Putana, as well as others like Arishta.

मां हन्तुम अमरैर यत्नः कृतः किल दुरात्मभिः मद्वीर्यतापितैर वीरा न त्व एतान गणयाम्य अहम ।।
māṃ hantum amarair yatnaḥ kṛtaḥ kila durātmabhiḥ madvīryatāpitair vīrā na tv etān gaṇayāmy aham ||
Indeed, the wicked have made efforts to kill me with the immortals, but I do not count these heroes who are empowered by my strength.

किम इन्द्रेणाल्पवीर्येण किं हरेणैकचारिणा हरिणा वापि किं साध्यं छिद्रेष्व असुरघातिना ।।
kim indreṇālpavīryeṇa kiṃ hareṇaikacāriṇā hariṇā vāpi kiṃ sādhyaṃ chidreṣv asuraghātinā ||
What can be achieved by Indra with his little strength, or by Hari who travels alone, or even by a deer against the asura slayer?

kim ādityaiḥ savasubhir alpavīryaiḥ kim agnibhiḥ kiṃ vānyair amaraiḥ sarvair madbāhubalanirjitaiḥ ||
What can the Adityas and the weak, or the Agnis do, or all the immortals who have been defeated by my arm strength?

kiṃ na dṛṣṭo 'marapatir mayā saṃyugam etya saḥ pṛṣṭhenaiva vahan bāṇān apāgacchan na vakṣasā ||
Is it not seen that the immortal lord has come to battle with me, carrying arrows on his back and not on his chest?

मद्राष्ट्रे वारिता वृष्टिर यदा शक्रेण किं तदा मद्बाणभिन्नैर जलदैर आपो मुक्ता यथेप्सिताः ।।
madrāṣṭre vāritā vṛṣṭir yadā śakreṇa kiṃ tadā madbāṇabhinnair jaladair āpo muktā yathepsitāḥ ||
When rain is withheld in Madra, what happens then by Indra? The waters, released by my arrows, are as desired.

किम उर्व्याम अवनीपाला मद्बाहुबलभीरवः न सर्वे सन्नतिं याता जरासंधम ऋते गुरुम ।।
kim urvyām avanīpālā madbāhubalabhīravaḥ na sarve sannatiṃ yātā jarāsaṃdham ṛte gurum ||
What of the earth's guardians, the mighty ones with strong arms? Not all bow down except Jarasandha, without the guru.

अमरेषु ममावज्ञा जायते दैत्यपुंगवाः हास्यं मे जायते वीरास तेषु यत्नपरेष्व अपि ।।
amareṣu mamāvajñā jāyate daityapuṃgavāḥ hāsyaṃ me jāyate vīrās teṣu yatnapareṣv api ||
Among the immortals, my disregard gives rise to the chief of demons. My laughter arises even among the valiant, despite their efforts.

तथापि खलु दुष्टानां तेषाम अभ्यधिकं मया अपकाराय दैत्येन्द्रा यतनीयं दुरात्मनाम ।।
tathāpi khalu duṣṭānāṃ teṣām abhyadhikaṃ mayā apakārāya daityendrā yatanīyaṃ durātmanām ||
Yet, indeed, for the wicked, I have done more harm than good to those evil-minded demon kings.

तद ये तपस्विनः केचित पृथिव्यां ये च यज्विनः कार्यो देवापकाराय तेषां सर्वात्मना वधः ।।
tad ye tapasvinaḥ kecit pṛthivyāṃ ye ca yajvinaḥ kāryo devāpakārāya teṣāṃ sarvātmanā vadhaḥ ||
Those who are ascetics and those who are worshippers on earth, their complete destruction is necessary for the harm of the gods.

उत्पन्नश चापि मृत्युर मे भूतपूर्वश च मे किल इत्य एतद बालिका प्राह देवकीगर्भसंभवा ।।
utpannaś cāpi mṛtyur me bhūtapūrvaś ca me kila ity etad bālikā prāha devakīgarbhasaṃbhavā ||
Death has also arisen for me, and it is indeed my past. Thus spoke the girl, born of Devaki.

तस्माद बालेषु परमो यत्नः कार्यो महीतले यत्रोद्रिक्तं बलं बाले स हन्तव्यः प्रयत्नतः ।।
tasmād bāleṣu paramo yatnaḥ kāryo mahītale yatrodriktaṃ balaṃ bāle sa hantavyaḥ prayatnataḥ ||
Therefore, utmost effort should be made regarding the children on earth, where the strength of the child is to be destroyed with effort.

इत्य आज्ञाप्यासुरान कंसः प्रविश्यात्मगृहं ततः मुमोच वसुदेवं च देवकीं च निरोधतः ।।
ity ājñāpyāsurān kaṃsaḥ praviśyātmagṛhaṃ tataḥ mumoca vasudevaṃ ca devakīṃ ca nirodhataḥ ||
Thus, having instructed the demons, Kansa entered his own house and imprisoned Vasudeva and Devaki.

युवयोर घातिता गर्भा वृथैवैते मयाधुना को ऽप्य अन्य एव नाशाय बालो मम समुद्गतः ।।
yuvayor ghātitā garbhā vṛthaivaite mayādhunā ko 'py anya eva nāśāya bālo mama samudgataḥ ||
The embryos of you two have been killed; these are indeed futile. Is there any other child of mine destined for destruction?

तद अलं परितापेन नूनं तद भाविनो हि ते अर्भका युवयोः को वा नायुषो ऽन्ते विहन्यते ।।
tad alaṃ paritāpena nūnaṃ tad bhāvino hi te arbhakā yuvayoḥ ko vā nāyuṣo 'nte vihanyate ||
Thus, it is enough to grieve; indeed, who among you will not be harmed at the end of life?

इत्य आश्वास्य विमुक्त्वा च कंसस तौ परिशङ्कितः अन्तर्गृहं द्विजश्रेष्ठ प्रविवेश पुनः स्वकम ।।
ity āśvāsya vimuktvā ca kaṃsas tau pariśaṅkitaḥ antargṛhaṃ dvijaśreṣṭha praviveśa punaḥ svakam ||
Thus reassuring them, Kansa, filled with doubt, entered his own house along with those two.
