All the genealogies of kings have been narrated by you, as well as the lineage and the stories of the family, described in detail.

This is the partial incarnation, O Brahmarshi, who is born from the Yadu dynasty; I wish to hear in detail about Vishnu.

The Supreme Lord, Purushottama, performed those deeds, and having descended in parts, O sage, speak of them there.

Maitreya, listen to this which I shall tell you, as you have asked me here about the deeds of Vishnu, born of his parts, for the welfare of the world.

Earlier, Vasudeva, the great sage, approached Devaki, the highly fortunate one, who is like a goddess, as the daughter of Devaka.

kaṃsas tayor vararathaṃ codayām āsa sārathiḥ vasudevasya devakyāḥ saṃyoge bhojavardhanaḥ ||
Kansa, the charioteer urged the excellent chariot of Vasudeva and Devaki, the one who increases the Bhoja dynasty.

athāntarikṣe vāg uccaiḥ kaṃsam ābhāṣya sādaram meghagambhīranirghoṣaṃ samābhāṣyedam abravīt ||
Then, in the sky, a voice spoke loudly to Kansa, addressing him respectfully, as if it were the deep sound of a cloud.

yām enāṃ vahase mūḍha saha bhartrā rathe sthitām asyās tavāṣṭamo garbhaḥ prāṇān apahariṣyati ||
O fool, you carry her who is situated in the chariot with your husband; her eighth embryo will take away your life.

ity ākarṇya samādāya khaḍgaṃ kaṃso mahābalaḥ devakīṃ hantum ārabdho vasudevo 'bravīd idam ||
Hearing this, the mighty Kansa took up his sword and spoke to Vasudeva, who was about to kill Devaki.

na hantavyā mahābhāga devakī bhavatā tava samarpayiṣye sakalān garbhān asyāudarodbhavān ||
O great being, Devaki should not be killed by you; I will surrender all the embryos born from her womb.

tathety āha ca taṃ kaṃso vasudevaṃ dvijottama na ghātayām āsa ca tāṃ devakīṃ tasya gauravāt ||
Thus, Kansa spoke to the best of the twice-born, Vasudeva, and did not kill Devaki due to his respect for her.

At that very time, the earth, burdened by the great weight, went to the Meru mountain in the assembly of the denizens of heaven.

sabrahmakān surān sarvān praṇipatyātha medinī kathayām āsa tat sarvaṃ khedāt karuṇabhāṣiṇī ||
The earth, having bowed down to all the gods and the Brahman, spoke all this out of compassion, from sorrow.

agniḥ suvarṇasya gurur gavāṃ sūryaḥ paro guruḥ mamāpy akhilalokānāṃ gurur nārāyaṇo guruḥ ||
Fire is the teacher of gold, the sun is the supreme teacher of cows; my teacher, too, is Narayana, the teacher of all worlds.

prajāpatipatir brahmā pūrveṣām api pūrvajaḥ kalākāṣṭhānimeṣātmā kālaś cāvyaktamūrtimān ||
Brahma, the lord of creatures, is also the ancestor of the ancients; he is the essence of time, manifesting in the form of the unmanifest.

ādityā marutaḥ sādhyā rudrā vasvaśvivahnayaḥ pitaro ye ca lokānāṃ sraṣṭāro 'tripurogamāḥ ||
The Adityas, Maruts, Sadhyas, Rudras, Vasus, and the ancestors of the worlds are the creators who come here.

yakṣarākṣasadaiteyā piśācoragadānavāḥ gandharvāpsarasaś caiva rūpaṃ viṣṇor mahātmanaḥ ||
The Yakshas, Rakshasas, Daityas, Pisachas, Nagas, and Danavas, as well as Gandharvas and Apsaras, all embody the form of Vishnu, the great soul.

graharkṣatārakācitragaganāgnijalānilāḥ ahaṃ ca viṣayāś caitat sarvaṃ viṣṇumayaṃ jagat ||
The planets, constellations, stars, the diverse sky, fire, water, and air, along with all objects, constitute the universe that is Vishnu.

tathāpy anekarūpasya tasya rūpāṇy aharniśam bādhyabādhakatāṃ yānti kallolā iva sāgare ||
Yet, the forms of that multifaceted one change day and night, like waves in the ocean.

tatsāmpratam ime daityāḥ kālanemipurogamāḥ martyalokaṃ samākramya bādhante 'harniśaṃ prajāḥ ||
Currently, these Daityas, led by Kalanemi, invade the mortal realm and torment the beings day and night.

कालनेमिर हतो यो ऽसौ विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना उग्रसेनसुतः कंसः संभूतः स महासुरः ।।
kālanemir hato yo 'sau viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā ugrasenasutaḥ kaṃsaḥ saṃbhūtaḥ sa mahāsuraḥ ||
Kalanemi, who was killed by Vishnu, was the son of Ugrasena and the great demon Kamsa.

ariṣṭo dhenukaḥ keśī pralambo narakas tathā sundo 'suras tathātyugro bāṇaś cāpi baleḥ sutaḥ ||
The demons Arishta, Dhenuka, Kesi, Pralamba, Naraka, Sunda, and the fierce Banasura, son of Baladeva.

And others of great valor, born in the houses of kings, I cannot even attempt to count the wicked souls.

akṣauhiṇyo 'tra bahulā divyamūrtidharāḥ surāḥ mahābalānāṃ dṛptānāṃ daityendrāṇāṃ mamopari ||
Here, many divine forms of the gods, the numerous Akshauhinis, are proud and powerful demons.

I, the immortal lord, declare to you that I am unable to bear the burden of this great weight.

Let that great being be done, my deliverance from the burden, so that I may not go to the nether world, being greatly distressed.

ity ākarṇya dharāvākyam aśeṣaṃ tridaśais tataḥ bhuvo bhārāvatārārthaṃ brahmā prāha pracoditaḥ ||
Thus hearing the words of the earth, the great Brahma, urged by the gods, spoke for the purpose of delivering the world.

As the earth said, all this is true, O celestial beings; I am, and you all are, the essence of Narayana.

विभूतयस तु यास तस्य तासाम एव परस्परम आधिक्यन्यूनता बाध्यबाधकत्वेन वर्तते ।।
vibhūtayas tu yās tasya tāsām eva parasparam ādhikyanyūnatā bādhyabādhakatvena vartate ||
The manifestations of that being are such that their superiority and inferiority exist in relation to one another.

tad āgacchata gacchāmaḥ kṣīrābdhes taṭam uttaram tatrārādhya hariṃ tasmai sarvaṃ vijñāpayāma vai ||
Come, let us go to the northern shore of the ocean of milk; there, worshipping Hari, let us inform him of everything.

सर्वदैव जगत्य अर्थे स सर्वात्मा जगन्मयः स्वल्पांशेनावतीर्योर्व्यां धर्मस्य कुरुते स्थितिम ।।
sarvadaiva jagaty arthe sa sarvātmā jaganmayaḥ svalpāṃśenāvatīryorvyāṃ dharmasya kurute sthitim ||
In all beings, He is the all-pervading spirit; He manifests in a small portion and establishes the essence of righteousness.

इत्य उक्त्वा प्रययौ तत्र सह देवैः पितामहः समाहितमतिश चैनं तुष्टाव गरुडध्वजम ।।
ity uktvā prayayau tatra saha devaiḥ pitāmahaḥ samāhitamatiś cainaṃ tuṣṭāva garuḍadhvajam ||
Having spoken thus, the grandfather departed there along with the gods, and with a focused mind, he praised Garuda, the one with the flag.

द्वे विद्ये त्वम अनाम्नाय परा चैवापरा तथा त एव भवतो रूपे मूर्तामूर्तात्मिके प्रभो ।।
dve vidye tvam anāmnāya parā caivāparā tathā ta eva bhavato rūpe mūrtāmūrtātmike prabho ||
You are of two kinds of knowledge, the supreme and the inferior; these are indeed your forms, O Lord, embodying both the manifest and the unmanifest.

dve brahmaṇī tv aṇīyo 'tisthūlātman sarvasarvavit śabdabrahmaparaṃ caiva brahma brahmamayasya yat ||
There are two Brahmanis; you are the subtle and the gross; the knower of all; the supreme sound of Brahman and that which is the essence of Brahman.

ṛgvedas tvaṃ yajurvedaḥ sāmavedas tv atharva ca śikṣā kalpo niruktaṃ ca chando jyotiṣam eva ca ||
You are the Rigveda, the Yajurveda, the Samaveda, and the Atharva; along with the teachings, the rituals, the etymology, the meters, and the astrology.

itihāsapurāṇe ca tathā vyākaraṇaṃ prabho mīmāṃsā nyāyikaṃ tadvad dharmaśāstrāṇy adhokṣaja ||
In the Itihasa and Puranas, as well as in grammar, O Lord, the Mimamsa and Nyaya texts, and similarly the scriptures of Dharma, are all from the Unmanifest.

आत्मात्मदेहगुणवद्विचाराचारि यद वचः तद अप्य आद्यपते नान्यद अध्यात्मात्मस्वरूपवत ।।
ātmātmadehaguṇavadvicārācāri yad vacaḥ tad apy ādyapate nānyad adhyātmātmasvarūpavat ||
The words of one who contemplates the qualities of the self and the body, O Lord, are not different from the essence of the Supreme Self.

त्वम अव्यक्तम अनिर्देश्यम अचिन्त्यानामवर्णवत अपाणिपादरूपं च विष्णुर नित्यं परात परम ।।
tvam avyaktam anirdeśyam acintyānāmavarṇavat apāṇipādarūpaṃ ca viṣṇur nityaṃ parāt param ||
You are the Unmanifest, the Indescribable, the Inconceivable, and yet you take the form without hands and feet; Vishnu, eternally supreme.

śṛṇoṣy akarṇaḥ paripaśyasi tvam acakṣur eko bahurūparūpaḥ apādahasto javano grahītā tvaṃ vetsi sarvaṃ na ca sarvavedyaḥ ||
You hear though you are without ears, you see though you are without eyes; you are one yet take many forms, the swift grasping one, you know all yet are not known by all.

अणोर अणीयांसम असत्स्वरूपं त्वां पश्यतो ऽज्ञाननिवृत्तिर अग्र्या धीर अस्य धीर्यस्य बिभर्ति नान्यद वरेण्यरूपात परतः परात्मन ।।
aṇor aṇīyāṃsam asatsvarūpaṃ tvāṃ paśyato 'jñānanivṛttir agryā dhīr asya dhīryasya bibharti nānyad vareṇyarūpāt parataḥ parātman ||
Seeing you, who are subtler than the subtlest and have no form, the removal of ignorance is supreme; the wise bear this wisdom, which is not different from the supreme form of the Supreme Self.

त्वं विश्वम आदिर भुवनस्य गोप्ता सर्वाणि भूतानि तवान्तराणि यद भूतभव्यं तद अणोर अणीयः पुमांस त्वम एकः प्रकृतेः परस्तात ।।
tvaṃ viśvam ādir bhuvanasya goptā sarvāṇi bhūtāni tavāntarāṇi yad bhūtabhavyaṃ tad aṇor aṇīyaḥ pumāṃs tvam ekaḥ prakṛteḥ parastāt ||
You are the origin of the universe, the protector of all beings, and the essence of all that exists. What is manifest and what is yet to be, you are the one who transcends nature.

You are the essence, the presence, the fame, the tranquility, the sky, the earth, the steadfastness, the modesty, the nourishment, the dawn, and indeed, you are all that is other.

ye tvām āryeti durgeti vedagarbhe 'mbiketi ca bhadreti bhadrakālīti kṣemyā kṣemakarīti ca ||
Those who call you Arya, Durga, Ambika, and Bhadrakali, and those who seek welfare and prosperity, indeed, they honor you.

प्रातश चैवापराह्णे च स्तोष्यन्त्य आनम्रमूर्तयः तेषां हि प्रार्थितं सर्वं मत्प्रसादाद भविष्यति ।।
prātaś caivāparāhṇe ca stoṣyanty ānamramūrtayaḥ teṣāṃ hi prārthitaṃ sarvaṃ matprasādād bhaviṣyati ||
In the morning and afternoon, those with humble forms will worship you; indeed, all that they request will come to pass by your grace.

surāmāṃsopahārais tu bhakṣyabhojyaiś ca pūjitā nṝṇām aśeṣakāmāṃs tvaṃ prasannā saṃpradāsyasi ||
You are worshipped with offerings of wine and meat, and with food; you will surely grant the desires of all beings.

ते सर्वे सर्वदा भद्रे मत्प्रसादाद असंशयम असंदिग्धा भविष्यन्ति गच्छ देवि यथोदितम ।।
te sarve sarvadā bhadre matprasādād asaṃśayam asaṃdigdhā bhaviṣyanti gaccha devi yathoditam ||
All of them will always be blessed by my grace without doubt; go, goddess, as it has been stated.
