aurabhragavyaiś ca tathā māsavṛddhyā pitāmahāḥ prayānti tṛptiṃ māṃsais tu nityaṃ vārdhrīṇasām iṣaiḥ ||
With the offerings of the great-grandfathers, and with the increase of the month, they attain satisfaction with meat, always with the offerings of the aged.

The meat of the sword, the seasonal vegetables, and honey are the offerings that provide utmost satisfaction in rituals, O Lord of Men.

gayām upetya yaḥ śrāddhaṃ karoti pṛthivīpate saphalaṃ tasya taj janma jāyate pitṛtuṣṭidam ||
He who performs the Śrāddha in Gayā, O Lord of the Earth, is born with a fruitful life that pleases the ancestors.

The offerings of the black sesame, the two types of wild herbs, and the forest herbs are suitable for the Śrāddha, O best of men.

yavāḥ priyaṃgavo mudgā godhūmā vrīhayas tilāḥ niṣpāvāḥ kovidārāś ca sarṣapāś cātra śobhanāḥ ||
Barley, long pepper, green gram, wheat, rice, sesame, and the non-peeled mustard seeds are all splendid offerings here.

akṛtāgrayaṇaṃ yac ca dhānyajātaṃ nareśvara rājamāṣān aṇūṃś caiva masūrāṃś ca vivarjayet ||
One should avoid unripe grains and certain pulses, O Lord of Men.

alābuṃ gṛñjanaṃ caiva palāṇḍuṃ piṇḍamūlakam gandhārakaṃ karambhāṇi lavaṇāny auṣarāṇi ca ||
Alabu, grinjana, palandu, pindamulaka, gandharaka, karambhani, and various salts are to be avoided.

आरक्ताश चैव निर्यासाः प्रत्यक्षलवणानि च वर्ज्यान्य एतानि वै श्राद्धे यच च वाचा न शस्यते ।।
āraktāś caiva niryāsāḥ pratyakṣalavaṇāni ca varjyāny etāni vai śrāddhe yac ca vācā na śasyate ||
Red and niryasa salts, and those that are visible should be avoided in shraddha, as well as anything that is not spoken of.

naktāhṛtam anutsṛṣṭaṃ tṛpyate na ca yatra gauḥ durgandhi phenilaṃ cāmbu śrāddhayogyaṃ na pārthiva ||
What is not offered at night, where a cow is not present, and where there is foul-smelling, foamy water is not suitable for shraddha.

Milk from a single cow, the meat of an animal that is not slaughtered, and the path of a buffalo should be avoided in shraddha rituals.

ṣaṇḍāpaviddhacaṇḍālapāṣaṇḍyunmattarogibhiḥ kṛkavākuśvanagnaiś ca vānaragrāmasūkaraiḥ ||
Those afflicted by the curse of a Chandala, those who are heretics, and those suffering from diseases should be avoided along with the pigs of the monkey village.

udakyāsūtikāśaucimṛtahāraiś ca vīkṣite śrāddhe surā na pitaro bhuñjate puruṣarṣabha ||
In the sacred offering, the gods do not partake of the food offered to the ancestors when it is seen with impurities from water, childbirth, or death, O best of men.

tasmāt pariśrite kuryāc śrāddhaṃ śraddhāsamanvitaḥ urvyāṃ ca tilavikṣepād yātudhānān nivārayet ||
Therefore, one should perform the offering with faith, and by casting sesame seeds on the ground, one should ward off the evil spirits.

na pūti naivopapannaṃ keśakīṭādibhir nṛpa na caivābhiṣavair miśram annaṃ paryuṣitaṃ tathā ||
Neither is it pure nor suitable, O king, when mixed with hair, insects, or other impurities, nor is the food that is stale and mixed with poison.

श्रद्धासमन्वितैर दत्तं पितृभ्यो नामगोत्रतः यदाहारास तु ते जातास तदाहारत्वम एति तत ।।
śraddhāsamanvitair dattaṃ pitṛbhyo nāmagotrataḥ yadāhārās tu te jātās tadāhāratvam eti tat ||
What is given with faith to the ancestors, according to name and lineage, becomes their food; thus, the essence of that food is realized.

śrūyante cāpi pitṛbhir gītā gāthā mahīpate ikṣvākor manuputrasya kalāpopavane purā ||
The verses of the Gita are also heard by the ancestors, O king, from the ancient grove of Ikshvaku, the son of Manu.

अपि नस ते भविष्यन्ति कुले सन्मार्गशीलिनः गयाम उपेत्य ये पिण्डान दास्यन्त्य अस्माकम आदरात ।।
api nas te bhaviṣyanti kule sanmārgaśīlinaḥ gayām upetya ye piṇḍān dāsyanty asmākam ādarāt ||
Indeed, those who are of good conduct will be born in our lineage, and those who come to Gayā will offer the piṇḍa out of our respect.

api naḥ sa kule jāyād yo no dadyāt trayodaśīm pāyasaṃ madhusarpibhyāṃ varṣāsu ca maghāsu ca ||
May he be born in our lineage who does not give us the payasa on the thirteenth day during the Maghā and rainy seasons.

गौरीं वाप्य उद्वहेत कन्यां नीलं वा वृषम उत्सृजेत यजेत वाश्वमेधेन विधिवद दक्षिणावता ।।
gaurīṃ vāpy udvahet kanyāṃ nīlaṃ vā vṛṣam utsṛjet yajeta vāśvamedhena vidhivad dakṣiṇāvatā ||
One should marry a girl or abandon a blue bull, and perform the Ashvamedha sacrifice with the proper offering.
