By performing the shraddha with faith for serpents, ancestors, and any other beings, one satisfies the entire universe.

In the month of Ashadha, on the dark fortnight, on the fifteenth day, O lord of men, one should perform the eightfold rites; listen to my words.

At the time of the equinox, during the eclipse of the moon and sun, the king of the earth moves through all the zodiac signs.

When it is the new moon and the auspicious conjunction of Maitra and Vishakha, the ancestors are satisfied with offerings.

amāvāsyā yadā puṣye raudre carkṣe punarvasau dvādaśābdaṃ tadā tṛptiṃ prayānti pitaro 'rcitāḥ ||
When it is the new moon, during Pushya, Raudra, and Punarvasu, the honored ancestors attain satisfaction for twelve years.

vaiśākhamāsasya ca yā tṛtīyā navamy asau kārttikaśuklapakṣe nabhasyamāsasya tu kṛṣṇapakṣe trayodaśī pañcadaśī ca māghe ||
In the month of Vaishakha, the third day and the ninth day, and in the bright fortnight of Kartika, and in the dark fortnight of Magha, the thirteenth and fifteenth days are significant.

These four dates at the beginning of the ages are said to be of infinite merit, O king, as stated in the scriptures.

पानीयम अप्य अत्र तिलैर विमिश्रं दद्यात पितृभ्यः प्रयतो मनुष्यः श्राद्धं कृतं तेन समाः सहस्रं रहस्यम एतत पितरो वदन्ति ।।
pānīyam apy atra tilair vimiśraṃ dadyāt pitṛbhyaḥ prayato manuṣyaḥ śrāddhaṃ kṛtaṃ tena samāḥ sahasraṃ rahasyam etat pitaro vadanti ||
Even water mixed with sesame should be given to the ancestors; a person who offers this, performs a hidden ritual that the ancestors declare to last for a thousand years.

māghāsite pañcadaśī kadācid upaiti yogaṃ yadi vāruṇena ṛkṣeṇa kālaḥ sa paraḥ pitṝṇāṃ na hy alpapuṇyair nṛpa labhyate 'sau ||
In the month of Magha, on the fifteenth day, if one performs yoga with Varuna, the time is auspicious; indeed, such a person cannot be attained by kings with little merit.

काले धनिष्ठा यदि नाम तस्मिन भवन्ति भूपाल तदा पितृभ्यः दत्तं जलान्नं प्रददाति तृप्तिं वर्षायुतं तत्कुलजैर मनुष्यैः ।।
kāle dhaniṣṭhā yadi nāma tasmin bhavanti bhūpāla tadā pitṛbhyaḥ dattaṃ jalānnaṃ pradadāti tṛptiṃ varṣāyutaṃ tatkulajair manuṣyaiḥ ||
When the star Dhaniṣṭhā is present at the right time, O king, it provides water and food to the ancestors, giving them satisfaction for a hundred years, through the descendants.

तत्रैव चेद भाद्रपदास तु पूर्वाः काले तदा यत क्रियते पितृभ्यः श्राद्धं परां तृप्तिम उपेत्य तेन युगं समग्रं पितरः स्वपन्ति ।।
tatraiva ced bhādrapadās tu pūrvāḥ kāle tadā yat kriyate pitṛbhyaḥ śrāddhaṃ parāṃ tṛptim upetya tena yugaṃ samagraṃ pitaraḥ svapanti ||
If the Bhādrapadā month is favorable, whatever is performed for the ancestors at that time brings them supreme satisfaction, and thus the ancestors sleep peacefully for an entire age.

गङ्गां शतद्रूम अथ वा विपाशां सरस्वतीं नैमिषगोमतीं वा ततो ऽवगाह्यार्चनम आदरेण कृत्वा पितॄणां दुरितानि हन्ति ।।
gaṅgāṃ śatadrūm atha vā vipāśāṃ sarasvatīṃ naimiṣagomatīṃ vā tato 'vagāhyārcanam ādareṇa kṛtvā pitṝṇāṃ duritāni hanti ||
By bathing in the Ganges, Shatadruma, or Sarasvatī, or the Naimiṣa Gomati, and performing worship with reverence, one removes the sins of the ancestors.

गायन्ति चैतत पितरः सदैव वर्षामघातृप्तिम अवाप्य भूयः माघासितान्ते शुभतीर्थतोयैर यास्याम तृप्तिं तनयादिदत्तैः ।।
gāyanti caitat pitaraḥ sadaiva varṣāmaghātṛptim avāpya bhūyaḥ māghāsitānte śubhatīrthatoyair yāsyāma tṛptiṃ tanayādidattaiḥ ||
The ancestors sing this always, attaining satisfaction from the rains; at the end of Magha, we shall go to the holy waters, satisfied by the offerings made by our children.

चित्तं च वित्तं च नृणां विशुद्धं शस्तश च कालः कथितो विधिश च पात्रं यथोक्तं परमा च भक्तिर नृणां प्रयच्छत्य अभिवाञ्छितानि ।।
cittaṃ ca vittaṃ ca nṛṇāṃ viśuddhaṃ śastaś ca kālaḥ kathito vidhiś ca pātraṃ yathoktaṃ paramā ca bhaktir nṛṇāṃ prayacchaty abhivāñchitāni ||
The pure mind and wealth of men, as well as the proper time and prescribed actions, grant the highest devotion to men, fulfilling their desires.

Indeed, fortunate is the wise man born in our lineage who does not engage in deceitful wealth and offers the rice balls.

Even if one is incapable, he will bow down and offer sesame seeds to the foremost Brahmin, giving it to someone.

With seven or eight sesame seeds, he will humbly offer them to us, directing his devotion.

Wherever he receives something from cows or from a cowherd, he will please us by offering it with faith.

In all circumstances, going to the forest, he will loudly recite this before the guardians of the sun and other worlds.

न मे ऽस्ति वित्तं न धनं च नान्यच छ्राद्धोपयोग्यं स्वपितॄन नतो ऽस्मि तृप्यन्तु भक्त्या पितरो मयैतौ कृतौ भुजौ वर्त्मनि मारुतस्य ।।
na me 'sti vittaṃ na dhanaṃ ca nānyac chrāddhopayogyaṃ svapitṝn nato 'smi tṛpyantu bhaktyā pitaro mayaitau kṛtau bhujau vartmani mārutasya ||
I have no wealth, no riches, nor anything else suitable for offering to my ancestors. I bow to them; may they be satisfied with my devotion, for I have performed these acts in the path of the wind.

इत्य एतत पितृभिर गीतं भावाभावप्रयोजनम यः करोति कृतं तेन श्राद्धं भवति पार्थिव ।।
ity etat pitṛbhir gītaṃ bhāvābhāvaprayojanam yaḥ karoti kṛtaṃ tena śrāddhaṃ bhavati pārthiva ||
Thus sung by the ancestors, this is the purpose of existence and non-existence. Whoever performs this, their offering becomes royal.
