For a dead relative, food is not to be eaten for ten days; donations, acceptance, sacrifices, and study should be avoided.

For a Brahmin, this lasts for twelve days; for a Kshatriya, it is also impure for half a month; for a Vaishya, it is a month; and for a Shudra, it is for purification.

On the day of the funeral, one should feed the Brahmins as desired, and on the next day, offer a ball of rice in the presence of the deceased's remnants.

There should be one vessel for the departed, and three paternal vessels. The king should pour into the paternal vessels and the vessel for the departed.

Even if the family is broken, the king should perform the rites for the deceased, whether through women or through the assembled relatives.

mṛtāhani ca kartavyāḥ strīṇām apy uttarāḥ kriyāḥ pratisaṃvatsaraṃ rājann ekoddiṣṭavidhānataḥ ||
On the day of death, the actions of women must also be performed every year, according to the prescribed regulations.

तस्माद उत्तरसंज्ञा याः क्रियास ताः शृणु पार्थिव यदा यदा च कर्तव्या विधिना येन चानघ ।।
tasmād uttarasaṃjñā yāḥ kriyās tāḥ śṛṇu pārthiva yadā yadā ca kartavyā vidhinā yena cānagha ||
Therefore, O king, listen to the actions that are called 'uttara' (higher). Whenever they are to be performed according to the prescribed method, know them to be pure.
