जातस्य जातकर्मादि क्रियाकाण्डम अशेषतः पुत्रस्य कुर्वीत पिता श्राद्धं चाभ्युदयात्मकम ।।
jātasya jātakarmādi kriyākāṇḍam aśeṣataḥ putrasya kurvīta pitā śrāddhaṃ cābhyudayātmakam ||
The father should perform the rites for his son, including the birth ceremony and other actions, as well as the shraddha that leads to prosperity.

yugmāṃs tu prāṅmukhān viprān bhojayen manujeśvara yathāvṛtti tathā kuryād daivaṃ pitryaṃ dvijanmanām ||
The man should feed the Brahmins facing east, according to their means, and perform the rites for the deities and ancestors of the twice-born.

दध्ना यवैः सबदरैर मिश्रान पिण्डान मुदा युतः नान्दीमुखेभ्यस तीर्थेन दद्याद दैवेन पार्थिव ।।
dadhnā yavaiḥ sabadarair miśrān piṇḍān mudā yutaḥ nāndīmukhebhyas tīrthena dadyād daivena pārthiva ||
One should offer mixed rice balls with joy to the deities, as well as to the ancestors, at sacred places, according to the divine order.

prājāpatyena vā sarvam upacāraṃ pradakṣiṇam kurvīta tat tathāśeṣavṛddhikāleṣu bhūpate ||
By the authority of the Prajapati, all rituals should be performed in a clockwise manner, especially during times of overall prosperity, O King.

ततश च नाम कुर्वीत पितैव दशमे ऽहनि देवपूर्वं नराख्यं हि शर्मवर्मादिसंयुतम ।।
tataś ca nāma kurvīta pitaiva daśame 'hani devapūrvaṃ narākhyaṃ hi śarmavarmādisaṃyutam ||
Then, on the tenth day, one should perform the naming ceremony, invoking the divine and associating it with the name of a man, known as Sharmavarma.

शर्मेति ब्राह्मणस्योक्तं वर्मेति क्षत्रसंश्रयम गुप्तदासात्मकं नाम प्रशस्तं वैश्यशूद्रयोः ।।
śarmeti brāhmaṇasyoktaṃ varmeti kṣatrasaṃśrayam guptadāsātmakaṃ nāma praśastaṃ vaiśyaśūdrayoḥ ||
The name 'Sharma' is designated for the Brahmin, while 'Varma' is for the Kshatriya; the name associated with the hidden servant is considered auspicious for Vaishyas and Shudras.

नार्थहीनं न चाशस्तं नापशब्दयुतं तथा नामङ्गल्यं जुगुप्स्यं वा नाम कुर्यात समाक्षरम ।।
nārthahīnaṃ na cāśastaṃ nāpaśabdayutaṃ tathā nāmaṅgalyaṃ jugupsyaṃ vā nāma kuryāt samākṣaram ||
One should not create a name that is meaningless, unworthy, or associated with negative connotations; rather, one should create a name that is auspicious and free from flaws.

नातिदीर्घं न ह्रस्वं वा नातिगुर्वक्षरान्वितम सुखोच्चार्यं तु तन नाम कुर्याद यत प्रवणाक्षरम ।।
nātidīrghaṃ na hrasvaṃ vā nātigurvakṣarānvitam sukhoccāryaṃ tu tan nāma kuryād yat pravaṇākṣaram ||
Neither too long nor too short, nor endowed with heavy syllables, one should chant the name that is pleasing and has the proper pronunciation.

ततो ऽनन्तरसंस्कारसंस्कृतो गुरुवेश्मनि यथोक्तं विधिम आश्रित्य कुर्याद विद्यापरिग्रहम ।।
tato 'nantarasaṃskārasaṃskṛto guruveśmani yathoktaṃ vidhim āśritya kuryād vidyāparigraham ||
Then, having been purified by the subsequent rites, one should perform the acquisition of knowledge in the guru's abode, following the prescribed method.

गृहीतविद्यो गुरवे दत्त्वा च गुरुदक्षिणाम गार्हस्थ्यम इच्छन भूपाल कुर्याद दारपरिग्रहम ।।
gṛhītavidyo gurave dattvā ca gurudakṣiṇām gārhasthyam icchan bhūpāla kuryād dāraparigraham ||
Having received knowledge from the guru and giving the guru's fee, the king should then acquire a wife, wishing for domestic life.

ब्रह्मचर्येण वा कालं कुर्यात संकल्पपूर्वकम गुरोः शुश्रूषणं कुर्यात तत्पुत्रादेर अथापि वा ।।
brahmacaryeṇa vā kālaṃ kuryāt saṃkalpapūrvakam guroḥ śuśrūṣaṇaṃ kuryāt tatputrāder athāpi vā ||
One should spend time in celibacy, making a firm resolve, and should serve the guru, whether he is a son or someone else.

vaikhānaso vāpi bhavet parivrāḍ athavecchayā pūrvasaṃkalpitaṃ yādṛk tādṛk kuryān mahīpate ||
Whether a Vaikhānasa or a wandering ascetic, one should act according to the previously determined nature, O king.

वर्षैर एकगुणां भार्याम उद्वहेत त्रिगुणः स्वयम नातिकेशाम अकेशां वा नातिकृष्णां न पिङ्गलाम ।।
varṣair ekaguṇāṃ bhāryām udvahet triguṇaḥ svayam nātikeśām akeśāṃ vā nātikṛṣṇāṃ na piṅgalām ||
One should not marry a woman who is single, who is excessively dark or excessively light, or who has a single hair.

निसर्गतो विकलाङ्गीम अधिकाङ्गीं च नोद्वहेत नाविशुद्धां सरोमां वा ऽकुलजां वातिरोगिणीम ।।
nisargato vikalāṅgīm adhikāṅgīṃ ca nodvahet nāviśuddhāṃ saromāṃ vā 'kulajāṃ vātirogiṇīm ||
One should not marry a woman who is naturally disabled or has excessive limbs, or who is impure or afflicted by wind diseases.

न दुष्टां दुष्टवाचालां व्यङ्गिनीं पितृमातृतः न श्मश्रुव्यञ्जनवतीं न चैव पुरुषाकृतिम ।।
na duṣṭāṃ duṣṭavācālāṃ vyaṅginīṃ pitṛmātṛtaḥ na śmaśruvyañjanavatīṃ na caiva puruṣākṛtim ||
One should not marry a woman who is wicked, has a harsh voice, is a mocker, or has a beard.

na ghargharasvarāṃ kṣāmavākyāṃ kākasvarāṃ na ca nātibaddhekṣaṇāṃ tadvad vṛttākṣīṃ nodvahet striyam ||
One should not marry a woman who has a hoarse voice, is excessively talkative, or has eyes that are too close together.

यस्याश च लोमशे जङ्घे गुल्फौ यस्यास तथोन्नतौ कूपो यस्या हसन्त्याश च गण्डयोस तां च नोद्वहेत ।।
yasyāś ca lomaśe jaṅghe gulphau yasyās tathonnatau kūpo yasyā hasantyāś ca gaṇḍayos tāṃ ca nodvahet ||
One should not marry a woman who has hair on her thighs, has large ankles, or who laughs excessively.

नातिरूक्षच्छविं पाण्डुकरजाम अरुणेक्षणाम आपीनहस्तपादां च न कन्याम उद्वहेद बुधः ।।
nātirūkṣacchaviṃ pāṇḍukarajām aruṇekṣaṇām āpīnahastapādāṃ ca na kanyām udvahed budhaḥ ||
A wise man should not marry a girl with a very rough complexion, one who is pale, with reddish eyes, and with thick hands and feet.

न वामनां नातिदीर्घां नोद्वहेत संहतभ्रुवम न चातिच्छिद्रदशनां न करालमुखीं नरः ।।
na vāmanāṃ nātidīrghāṃ nodvahet saṃhatabhruvam na cāticchidradaśanāṃ na karālamukhīṃ naraḥ ||
A man should not marry a girl who is neither too short nor too tall, who has well-formed eyebrows, and who does not have a gaping mouth or a terrifying face.

पञ्चमीं मातृपक्षाच च पितृपक्षाच च सप्तमीम गृहस्थस तूद्वहेत कन्यां न्याय्येन विधिना नृप ।।
pañcamīṃ mātṛpakṣāc ca pitṛpakṣāc ca saptamīm gṛhasthas tūdvahet kanyāṃ nyāyyena vidhinā nṛpa ||
A householder should marry a girl on the fifth day from the maternal side and the seventh day from the paternal side, according to the proper procedure.

ब्राह्मो दैवस तथैवार्षः प्राजापत्यस तथासुरः गान्धर्वराक्षसौ चान्यौ पैशाचश चाष्टमो ऽधमः ।।
brāhmo daivas tathaivārṣaḥ prājāpatyas tathāsuraḥ gāndharvarākṣasau cānyau paiśācaś cāṣṭamo 'dhamaḥ ||
The eighth type is the lowest: Brahmin, divine, Aryan, Prajapati, Asura, Gandharva, Rakshasa, and the lowest, the Pisacha.

एतेषां यस्य यो धर्मो वर्णस्योक्तो महर्षिभिः कुर्वीत दाराहरणं तेनान्यं परिवर्जयेत ।।
eteṣāṃ yasya yo dharmo varṇasyokto maharṣibhiḥ kurvīta dārāharaṇaṃ tenānyaṃ parivarjayet ||
One who follows the righteous path as prescribed by the great sages regarding the caste should avoid taking another's wife.

सधर्मचारिणीं प्राप्य गार्हस्थ्यं सहितस तया समुद्वहेद ददात्य एतत सम्यगूढं महाफलम ।।
sadharmacāriṇīṃ prāpya gārhasthyaṃ sahitas tayā samudvahed dadāty etat samyagūḍhaṃ mahāphalam ||
Having attained a righteous wife, one should perform household duties with her; this is said to yield great fruit.
