The boy, having undergone the sacred thread ceremony, should reside in the guru's house, focused on the study of the Vedas as a celibate.

śaucācāravatā tatra kāryaṃ śuśrūṣaṇaṃ guroḥ vratāni caratā grāhyo vedaś ca kṛtabuddhinā ||
In that place, the one who is pure and follows the code of conduct should serve the guru. The vows should be observed, and the Vedas should be understood by the one with a clear intellect.

At both dawn and dusk, the king should stand in reverence of the sun and fire, and should also offer salutations to the guru.

sthite tiṣṭhed vrajed yāte nīcair āsīta cāsati śiṣyo gurau nṛpaśreṣṭha pratikūlaṃ na saṃcaret ||
One should remain steady, move forward, and not be influenced by the lowly when instructed by the teacher, the best among kings.

One should read the Vedas as instructed, without distraction, and only eat the alms permitted by the guru.

One should immerse oneself in water as guided by the teacher, and bring forth the auspicious water for the rituals.

Having obtained permission, the wise one should settle into domestic life, having grasped the sacred knowledge.

Having acquired wealth through rightful means, one should perform all household duties according to one's ability.

nivāpena pitṝn arced yajñair devāṃs tathātithīn annair munīṃś ca svādhyāyair apatyena prajāpatim ||
One should worship the ancestors with offerings, the deities with sacrifices, and the guests with food, as well as the sages with study, and the Lord of creatures with offspring.

balikarmaṇā ca bhūtāni vātsalyenākhilaṃ jagat prāpnoti lokān puruṣo nijakarmasamārjitān ||
By performing actions with strength, a person attains all beings and the entire world with affection, and he reaches the realms earned by his own deeds.

bhikṣābhujaś ca ye kecit parivrāḍbrahmacāriṇaḥ te 'py atraiva pratiṣṭhante gārhasthyaṃ tena vai param ||
Those who are beggars and those who are wandering celibates also find their place here; indeed, household life is the highest for them.

The learned ones wander the earth for the purpose of studying the Vedas and for taking holy baths, O Lord, and to see the earth.

aniketā hy anāhārā yatrasāyaṃgṛhās tu ye teṣāṃ gṛhasthaḥ sarveṣāṃ pratiṣṭhā yonir eva ca ||
Those who are without a home and without food, where they lie down at night, the householder among them is the source of all their honor.

teṣāṃ svāgatadānādi vaktavyaṃ madhuraṃ nṛpa gṛhāgatānāṃ dadyāc ca śayanāsanabhojanam ||
The king should sweetly speak welcoming words and provide a bed, seat, and food to those who come home.

atithir yasya bhagnāśo gṛhāt pratinivartate sa dattvā duṣkṛtaṃ tasmai puṇyam ādāya gacchati ||
The guest who returns home after being insulted takes away the sins of the host and carries away the merit.

In a virtuous home, ignorance, ego, hypocrisy, and harshness do not thrive.

He who acts rightly as a householder, freed from all bonds, attains the highest worlds.

vayaḥpariṇatau rājan kṛtakṛtyo gṛhāśramī putreṣu bhāryāṃ nikṣipya vanaṃ gacchet sahaiva vā ||
When one ages, O king, having fulfilled his duties, he should go to the forest, leaving behind his wife and children, either alone or with them.

parṇamūlaphalāhāraḥ keśaśmaśrujaṭādharaḥ bhūmiśāyī bhavet tatra muniḥ sarvātithir nṛpa ||
The one who lives on leaves, roots, and fruits, with matted hair and beard, lying on the ground, is a sage and a guest of all, O king.

चर्मकाशकुशैः कुर्यात परिधानोत्तरीयके तद्वत त्रिषवणं स्नानं शस्तम अस्य नरेश्वर ।।
carmakāśakuśaiḥ kuryāt paridhānottarīyake tadvat triṣavaṇaṃ snānaṃ śastam asya nareśvara ||
With leather, grass, and kusha, one should wear the upper garment; similarly, the triple bathing is the best for this lord of men.

Worship of deities, offerings, and the worship of all who come, along with the giving of alms, is the best for this lord of men.

vanyasnehena gātrāṇām abhyaṅgaś cāsya śasyate tapasyataś ca rājendra śītoṣṇādisahiṣṇutā ||
With the affection of the forest, the body becomes nourished; and through austerity, O king, one becomes tolerant of heat and cold.

yas tv etāṃ niyataś caryāṃ vānaprasthaś caren muniḥ sa dahaty agnivad doṣāñ jayel lokāṃś ca śāśvatān ||
He who follows this disciplined conduct as a hermit, burns away sins like fire and conquers eternal worlds.

caturthaś cāśramo bhikṣoḥ procyate yo manīṣibhiḥ tasya svarūpaṃ gadato mama śrotuṃ nṛpārhasi ||
The fourth ashrama is called the Bhikshu, as stated by the wise. Its nature, O king, is not suitable for you to hear.

O king, having renounced affection for sons, wealth, and wife, one should go to the fourth ashrama, free from envy.

O king of the earth, one should abandon all actions related to the threefold goals and be friendly to all beings, like a friend.

One should act wisely with the beings born from wombs, eggs, and moisture, avoiding betrayal and rejecting all attachments.

In a village, one should stay for one night; in a city, for five nights, so that love or hatred does not arise.

prāṇayātrānimittaṃ ca vyaṅgāre bhuktavajjane kāle praśastavarṇānāṃ bhikṣārthaṃ paryaṭed gṛhān ||
For the sake of life’s journey, one should wander from house to house, like a beggar, at the appropriate time, among those of good character.

kāmaḥ krodhas tathā darpamohalobhādayaś ca ye tāṃs tu doṣān parityajya parivrāḍ nirmamo bhavet ||
One should abandon desires, anger, pride, delusion, and greed; thus, the wandering ascetic should become free from attachments.

abhayaṃ sarvabhūtebhyo dattvā yaś carate muniḥ na tasya sarvabhūtebhyo bhayam utpadyate kvacit ||
The sage who gives fearlessness to all beings and walks the earth, never faces fear from any being.

कृत्वाग्निहोत्रं स्वशरीरसंस्थं शारीरम अग्निं स्वमुखे जुहोति विप्रस तु भिक्षोपगतैर हविर्भिश चिताग्निना स व्रजति स्म लोकान ।।
kṛtvāgnihotraṃ svaśarīrasaṃsthaṃ śārīram agniṃ svamukhe juhoti vipras tu bhikṣopagatair havirbhiś citāgninā sa vrajati sma lokān ||
Having performed the fire sacrifice, the sage offers the fire that resides in his body through his mouth; thus, he goes to the worlds with offerings received from the Brahmins.

मोक्षाश्रमं यश चरते यथोक्तं शुचिः स्वसंकल्पितबुद्धियुक्तः अनिन्धनं ज्योतिर इव प्रशान्तः स ब्रह्मलोकं श्रयते द्विजातिः ।।
mokṣāśramaṃ yaś carate yathoktaṃ śuciḥ svasaṃkalpitabuddhiyuktaḥ anindhanaṃ jyotir iva praśāntaḥ sa brahmalokaṃ śrayate dvijātiḥ ||
The one who practices the path of liberation, being pure and endowed with a focused mind, like an unextinguished light, attains the realm of Brahman.
