The branch of the Sama Veda, Jaimini, a disciple of Vyasa, is the one who, in sequence, explained to Maitreya; listen to that which is mine.

sumantus tasya putro 'bhūt sukarmāsyāpy abhūt sutaḥ adhītavantāv ekaikāṃ saṃhitāṃ tau mahāmunī ||
Sumantu was his son, and Sukarma was also his son. Both the great sages studied each of the Samhitas.

Sukarma, the son, created a thousand divisions of the Samhita, and he, along with his disciples, accepted the great vows.

Hiranyanabha, Kausalya, and Poushpinjisha, the best of the twice-born, had fifteen disciples who were the singers of the Uddhichya.

Three disciples were made of the path, by whom the Brahmin scriptures were compiled: Jājali, Kumudādi, and the third was the Brahmin Śaunaka.

Śaunaka, having divided it into two, gave one to Babhrava and the second to the one known as Saindhava.

caturthaḥ syād āṅgirasaḥ śāntikalpaś ca pañcamaḥ śreṣṭhās tv atharvaṇām ete saṃhitānāṃ vikalpakāḥ ||
The fourth would be Āṅgirasa, and the fifth is Śāntikalpa; these are the alternatives of the scriptures of the Atharva.
