yajurvedataroḥ śākhāḥ saptaviṃśan mahāmatiḥ vaiśampāyananāmāsau vyāsaśiṣyaś cakāra vai ||
The branches of the Yajurveda are twenty-seven in number; this great sage, named Vaishampayana, was a disciple of Vyasa.

Yajnavalkya was born as the son of Brahmarata, a twice-born, who was always devoted to the duties of a teacher and was a supreme knower of dharma.

ṛṣir yo 'dya mahāmerau samājenāgamiṣyati tasya vai saptarātrāt tu brahmahatyā bhaviṣyati ||
The sage who today will come to the great Meru with the assembly will, after seven nights, incur the sin of Brahmahatya.

pūrvam evaṃ munigaṇaiḥ samayo 'bhūt kṛto dvija vaiśampāyana ekas tu taṃ vyatikrāntavāṃs tadā ||
Previously, a time was established by the sages; at that time, only Vaishampayana was there, and he was then surpassed.

The boy, touched by the foot, was then struck down.

śiṣyān āha ca bhoḥ śiṣyā brahmahatyāpahaṃ vratam caradhvaṃ matkṛte sarve na vicāryam idaṃ tathā ||
He said to the disciples, 'O disciples, the vow that removes the sin of Brahma-hatya, all of you should perform it for my sake; this should not be questioned.'

athāha yājñavalkyas taṃ kim ebhir bhagavan dvijaiḥ kleśitair alpatejobhiś cariṣye 'ham idaṃ vratam ||
Then Yajnavalkya said, 'O Lord, what shall I do with these distressed Brahmins? I shall perform this vow.'

ततः क्रुद्धो गुरुः प्राह याज्ञवल्क्यं महामतिः मुच्यतां यत त्वयाधीतं मत्तो विप्रावमानक ।।
tataḥ kruddho guruḥ prāha yājñavalkyaṃ mahāmatiḥ mucyatāṃ yat tvayādhītaṃ matto viprāvamānaka ||
Then the angry guru spoke to Yajnavalkya, the great-minded one, 'Let that which you have studied be released from you, O Brahmin, who is dishonored by me.'

निस्तेजसो वदस्य एतान यस त्वं ब्राह्मणपुंगवान तेन शिष्येण नार्थो ऽस्ति ममाज्ञाभङ्गकारिणा ।।
nistejaso vadasy etān yas tvaṃ brāhmaṇapuṃgavān tena śiṣyeṇa nārtho 'sti mamājñābhaṅgakāriṇā ||
To the one who speaks without energy, you, O best of Brahmins, there is no purpose with that disciple who causes the breaking of my command.

याज्ञवल्क्यस ततः प्राह भक्त्यैतत ते मयोदितम ममाप्य अलं त्वयाधीतं यन मया तद इदं द्विज ।।
yājñavalkyas tataḥ prāha bhaktyaitat te mayoditam mamāpy alaṃ tvayādhītaṃ yan mayā tad idaṃ dvija ||
Yajnavalkya then spoke, 'This devotion is what I have spoken to you. What I have taught you is sufficient for me, O Brahmin.'

इत्य उक्त्वा रुधिराक्तानि सरूपाणि यजूंषि सः छर्दयित्वा ददौ तस्मै ययौ च स्वेच्छया मुनिः ।।
ity uktvā rudhirāktāni sarūpāṇi yajūṃṣi saḥ chardayitvā dadau tasmai yayau ca svecchayā muniḥ ||
Having said this, he, covered in blood, gave the offerings and departed at his own will, the sage.

यजूंष्य अथ विसृष्टानि याज्ञवल्क्येन वै द्विज जगृहुस तित्तिरीभूत्वा तैत्तिरीयास तु ते ततः ।।
yajūṃṣy atha visṛṣṭāni yājñavalkyena vai dvija jagṛhus tittirībhūtvā taittirīyās tu te tataḥ ||
The offerings that were released by Yajnavalkya were accepted by the Brahmins, who became like Tittiri birds, and then they became Taittiriya.

ब्रह्महत्या व्रतं चीर्णं गुरुणा चोदितैस तु यैः चरकाध्वर्यवस ते तु चरणान मुनिसत्तम ।।
brahmahatyā vrataṃ cīrṇaṃ guruṇā coditais tu yaiḥ carakādhvaryavas te tu caraṇān munisattama ||
The vow of Brahmahatya, broken by those who were urged by the Guru, was indeed for the great sage's feet.

yājñavalkyo 'pi maitreya prāṇāyāmaparāyaṇaḥ tuṣṭāva praṇataḥ sūryaṃ yajūṃṣy abhilaṣaṃs tataḥ ||
Yajnavalkya, too, O Maitreya, devoted to Pranayama, praised the sun, desiring the offerings.

namaḥ savitre dvārāya mukter amitatejase ṛgyajuḥsāmabhūtāya trayīdhāmavate namaḥ ||
Salutations to Savitr, the door to liberation, of infinite radiance, who is the essence of the Rig, Yajur, and Sama Vedas. Salutations to Him who embodies the threefold knowledge.

Salutations to Agniṣoma, the cause of the universe, who holds the supreme light and the vast energy of the sun.

kalākāṣṭhānimeṣādikālajñānātmane namaḥ dhyeyāya viṣṇurūpāya paramākṣararūpiṇe ||
Salutations to Him who is the essence of time, from the smallest particle to the vastness of the universe, and who is to be meditated upon in the form of Vishnu, the eternal.

bibharti yaḥ suragaṇān āpyāyenduṃ svaraśmibhiḥ svadhāmṛtena ca pitṝṃs tasmai tṛptyātmane namaḥ ||
Salutations to Him who nourishes the celestial beings with the moon's rays and sustains the ancestors with his own essence.

himāmbugharmavṛṣṭīnāṃ kartā bhartā ca yaḥ prabhuḥ tasmai trikālabhūtāya namaḥ sūryāya vedhase ||
Salutations to the Lord who is the creator and sustainer of the rains from the icy clouds, the one who exists in all three times.

अपहन्ति तमो यश च जगतो ऽस्य जगत्पतिः सत्त्वधामधरो देवो नमस तस्मै विवस्वते ।।
apahanti tamo yaś ca jagato 'sya jagatpatiḥ sattvadhāmadharo devo namas tasmai vivasvate ||
The lord of the universe, who removes darkness and fame, to that deity who holds the realm of goodness, I bow to Vivasvat.

सत्कर्मयोग्यो न जनो नैवापः शौचकारणम यस्मिन्न अनुदिते तस्मै नमो देवाय भास्वते ।।
satkarmayogyo na jano naivāpaḥ śaucakāraṇam yasminn anudite tasmai namo devāya bhāsvate ||
The person who is fit for righteous deeds does not become impure due to cleanliness. To that deity who is not spoken of, I bow to the shining one.

स्पृष्टो यदंशुभिर लोकः क्रियायोग्यो ऽभिजायते पवित्रताकारणाय तस्मै शुद्धात्मने नमः ।।
spṛṣṭo yadaṃśubhir lokaḥ kriyāyogyo 'bhijāyate pavitratākāraṇāya tasmai śuddhātmane namaḥ ||
When touched by the rays, the world is born for action. To that pure soul, I bow for the sake of purity.

नमः सवित्रे सूर्याय भास्कराय विवस्वते आदित्यायादिभूताय देवादीनां नमो नमः ।।

Salutations to Savitr, the Sun, the Illuminator, to Vivasvat, to Aditya and the other beings, I bow repeatedly.

hiraṇmayaṃ rathaṃ yasya ketavo 'mṛtadhāriṇaḥ vahanti bhuvanālokacakṣuṣas taṃ namāmy aham ||
I bow to him whose chariot is made of gold, and who carries the immortal beings of the world with the eyes of the universe.

ity evamādibhis tena stūyamānaḥ stavai raviḥ vājirūpadharaḥ prāha vrīyatām iti vāñchitam ||
Thus praised by various hymns, the sun, holding the form of a horse, spoke: 'Let it be as desired.'

yājñavalkyas tadā prāha praṇipatya divākaram yajūṃṣi tāni me dehi yāni santi na me gurau ||
Then Yajnavalkya, bowing to the sun, said: 'Give me those Yajus verses that are not with my teacher.'

evam ukto dadau tasmai yajūṃṣi bhagavān raviḥ ayātayāmasaṃjñāni yāni vetti na tadguruḥ ||
Thus addressed, the sun gave him the Yajus verses that the teacher does not know.

yajūṃṣi yair adhītāni tāni viprair dvijottama vājinas te samākhyātāḥ sūryo 'śvaḥ so 'bhavad yataḥ ||
The Yajus verses studied by the best of the twice-born, the horse was named after them, as the sun became.

śākhābhedās tu teṣāṃ vai daśa pañca ca vājinām kaṇvādyāḥ sumahābhāgā yājñavalkyapravartitāḥ ||
Among them, there are indeed ten or five branches, initiated by Yajnavalkya, like the great Kaṇva.
