ādyo vedaś catuṣpādaḥ śatasāhasrasaṃmitaḥ tato daśaguṇaḥ kṛtsno yajño 'yaṃ sarvakāmadhuk ||
The original Veda is four-footed, consisting of hundreds of thousands of verses; from it, the complete sacrifice is tenfold, fulfilling all desires.

Then, in the twenty-eighth cycle, my son Vyasa divided the single Veda into four parts.

As he, the wise Vyasa, divided the Vedas, so were the Vedas divided by me in all respects.

By this, O best of the twice-born, understand the divisions of the branches of the Vedas that were composed in the four ages.

kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaṃ vyāsaṃ viddhi nārāyaṇaṃ prabhum ko 'nyo hi bhuvi maitreya mahābhāratakṛd bhavet ||
Know that Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa is the Lord Narayana; who else in this world could be the author of the Mahabharata?

tena vyastā yathā vedā matputreṇa mahātmanā dvāpare hy atra maitreya tan me śṛṇu yathārthataḥ ||
Thus, the Vedas were divided by my great-souled son; in the Dvapara age, listen to me, O Maitreya, as I explain the truth.

ब्रह्मणा चोदितो व्यासो वेदान व्यस्तुं प्रचक्रमे अथ शिष्यान स जग्राह चतुरो वेदपारगान ।।
brahmaṇā codito vyāso vedān vyastuṃ pracakrame atha śiṣyān sa jagrāha caturo vedapāragān ||
Inspired by Brahma, Vyasa began to compile the Vedas. He then took hold of four students well-versed in the Vedas.

ऋग्वेदश्रावकं पैलं जग्राह स महामुनिः वैशम्पायननामानं यजुर्वेदस्य चाग्रहीत ।।
ṛgvedaśrāvakaṃ pailaṃ jagrāha sa mahāmuniḥ vaiśampāyananāmānaṃ yajurvedasya cāgrahīt ||
The great sage took hold of Paila, a reciter of the Rigveda, and also accepted Vaishampayana, the expert of the Yajurveda.

jaiminiṃ sāmavedasya tathaivātharvavedavit sumantus tasya śiṣyo 'bhūd vedavyāsasya dhīmataḥ ||
Jaimini, an expert of the Samaveda, and Sumantu, a disciple of the wise Vyasa, were also accepted.

romaharṣaṇanāmānaṃ mahābuddhiṃ mahāmuniḥ sūtaṃ jagrāha śiṣyaṃ sa itihāsapurāṇayoḥ ||
The great sage, known as Romaharshana, with great wisdom, took Suta as his disciple from the histories and Puranas.

eka āsīd yajurvedas taṃ caturdhā vyakalpayat cāturhotram abhūd yasmiṃs tena yajñam athākarot ||
There was one Yajurveda, which he divided into four parts, leading to the establishment of the Chaturhotra sacrifice.

ādhvaryavaṃ yajurbhis tu ṛgbhir hotraṃ tathā muniḥ audgātraṃ sāmabhiś cakre brahmatvaṃ cāpy atharvabhiḥ ||
The priest Ādhvaryu, with the Yajurveda, and the sage with the Ṛgveda, performed the offerings; the Audgātra priest chanted the Sāma hymns, and through the Atharvaveda, attained the status of Brahman.

tataḥ sa ṛca uddhṛtya ṛgvedaṃ kṛtavān muniḥ yajūṃṣi ca yajurvedaṃ sāmavedaṃ ca sāmabhiḥ ||
Then, the sage, having recited the Ṛc, composed the Ṛgveda, along with the Yajurveda and the Sāma Veda with their hymns.

राज्ञस त्व अथर्ववेदेन सर्वकर्माणि स प्रभुः कारयाम आस मैत्रेय ब्रह्मत्वं च यथास्थितिः ।।
rājñas tv atharvavedena sarvakarmāṇi sa prabhuḥ kārayām āsa maitreya brahmatvaṃ ca yathāsthitiḥ ||
Thus, the lord, with the Atharvaveda, caused all actions of the kings to be performed, O Maitreya, as per their status of Brahman.

सो ऽयम एको महावेदतरुस तेन पृथक्कृतः चतुर्धा तु ततो जातं वेदपादपकाननम ।।
so 'yam eko mahāvedatarus tena pṛthakkṛtaḥ caturdhā tu tato jātaṃ vedapādapakānanam ||
This one is the great tree of the Vedas; it was separated into four parts, which then became the forest of the Vedic branches.

bibheda prathamaṃ vipra paila ṛgvedapādapam indrapramataye prādād bāṣkalāya ca saṃhite ||
The first sage Paila divided the Ṛgveda into parts for Indra's worship and also gave the Saṃhitā to Bāṣkala.

चतुर्धा स बिभेदाथ बाष्कलो निजसंहिताम बौध्यादिभ्यो ददौ तास तु शिष्येभ्यः स महामतिः ।।
caturdhā sa bibhedātha bāṣkalo nijasaṃhitām baudhyādibhyo dadau tās tu śiṣyebhyaḥ sa mahāmatiḥ ||
Then, he divided the text into four parts; the great-minded Bāṣkala gave those to his disciples from the Baudhyas and others.

बौध्याग्निमाठरौ तद्वद याज्ञवल्क्यपराशरौ प्रतिशाखास तु शाखायास तस्यास ते जगृहुर मुने ।।
baudhyāgnimāṭharau tadvad yājñavalkyaparāśarau pratiśākhās tu śākhāyās tasyās te jagṛhur mune ||
Similarly, the sages Yājñavalkya and Parāśara took the branches of the text from the two scholars Baudhyāgni and Māṭhara.

indrapramatir ekāṃ tu saṃhitāṃ svasutaṃ tataḥ māṇḍukeyaṃ mahātmānaṃ maitreyādhyāpayat tadā ||
Indrapramati then taught the text to his son, the great soul Māṇḍukeya, at that time.

From him, the disciples and the sons of the disciples gradually went forth.

vedamitras tu śākalyaḥ saṃhitāṃ tām adhītavān cakāra saṃhitāḥ pañca śiṣyebhyaḥ pradadau ca tāḥ ||
Vedamitra, the Shākalya, studied that text and produced five texts, which he then gave to the disciples.

tasya śiṣyās tu ye pañca teṣāṃ nāmāni me śṛṇu mudgalo gālavaś caiva vātsyaḥ śālīya eva ca śiśiraḥ pañcamaś cāsīt maitreya sumahāmuniḥ ||
Listen to the names of the five disciples of that great sage: Mudgala, Gālava, Vātsya, Śālīya, and the fifth one was Śiśira, O Maitreya, the great sage.

संहितात्रितयं चक्रे शाकपूणिर अथेतरः निरुक्तम अकरोत तद्वच चतुर्थं मुनिसत्तम ।।
saṃhitātritayaṃ cakre śākapūṇir athetaraḥ niruktam akarot tadvac caturthaṃ munisattama ||
The sage Śākapūṇi composed the threefold Saṃhitā, and the great sage created the Nirukta, which is the fourth.

krauñco vaitālakis tadvad balākaś ca mahāmuniḥ niruktaś ca caturtho 'bhūd vedavedāṅgapāragaḥ ||
The great sage Krauñcha and the sage Vaitālaki, as well as the sage Balāka, were the fourth, and he was well-versed in the Vedas and their branches.

इत्य एताः प्रतिशाखाभ्यो ऽप्य अनुशाखा द्विजोत्तम बाष्कलश चापरास तिस्रः संहिताः कृतवान द्विज शिष्यः कालायनिर गार्ग्यस तृतीयश च तथा जवः ।।
ity etāḥ pratiśākhābhyo 'py anuśākhā dvijottama bāṣkalaś cāparās tisraḥ saṃhitāḥ kṛtavān dvija śiṣyaḥ kālāyanir gārgyas tṛtīyaś ca tathā javaḥ ||
Thus, from these branches, the excellent twice-born created three Saṃhitās: Bāṣkala, Aparāsa, and the disciple Kālāyana, along with the third one, called Java.

ity ete bahvṛcāḥ proktāḥ saṃhitā yaiḥ pravartitāḥ ||
Thus, these many Ṛgvedas were declared, which were initiated by the Saṃhitās.
