Dhruva and the glorious one, from the glorious, Shambhu was born; from the righteous, he took the pure shadow of five sinless sons.

The enemy, the conqueror of enemies, the sage, the wolf-like one, endowed with the radiance of a wolf; from the enemy, he took the great eye, the source of all radiance.

He conceived Manu in the lake of Pushkara and in the ocean, the eye of the sage, the son of Prajapati, of the great-souled hero.

From Manu, ten mighty ones were born in the great ocean, the best among the daughters of the great Prajapati.

Kuru, Puru, Shatadyumna, the ascetic Satyavan, and the pure Chuchi, Agnishtud, Atiratra, and Sudyumna, these nine, and Abhimanyu, the tenth, are of great prowess.

From Kuru were born six sons of great glory: Anga, Sumanasa, Khyati, Kratu, Angirasa, and Shibi.

When Vena's hand was churned, the great sage was born, known as Vainya, who is praised as the ruler of the earth.

The maiden named Sunitha, who was the firstborn of death, became the wife of Anga, and from her, Vena was born.

Due to the fault of his maternal grandfather, the son of death manifested a wicked nature by his very nature, O Maitreya.

When Vena was anointed as king by the great sages, he proclaimed himself the ruler of the earth.

na yaṣṭavyaṃ na hotavyaṃ na dātavyaṃ kathaṃcana bhoktā yajñasya kas tv anyo hy ahaṃ yajñapatiḥ prabhuḥ ||
Neither should offerings be made, nor oblations, nor gifts in any way; who else is the enjoyer of the sacrifice, for I am indeed the lord of the sacrifice.

Then the sages, having worshipped the lord of the earth, spoke in unison, 'O Maitreya, we are present.'

By performing a long sacrifice, we shall worship the lord of all sacrifices, Hari. May auspiciousness be yours; your share will be there.

By sacrifice, the sacrificial person, Vishnu, is pleased, O king. We shall grant you all your desires.

To those in whose realm Hari is worshipped with sacrifices, the lord of sacrifices grants all their desired attainments.

mattaḥ ko 'bhyadhiko 'nyo 'sti kaś cārādhyo mamāparaḥ ko 'yaṃ harir iti khyāto yo vai yajñeśvaro mataḥ ||
Who is greater than me? Who is worthy of worship other than me? Who is this Hari, known as the lord of sacrifices?

brahmā janārdanaḥ śaṃbhur indro vāyur yamo raviḥ hutabhug varuṇo dhātā pūṣā bhūmir niśākaraḥ ||
Brahma, Janardana, Shambhu, Indra, Vayu, Yama, Ravi, the fire god, Varuna, Dhata, Pushan, Earth, and the moon.

ete cānye ca ye devāḥ śāpānugrahakāriṇaḥ nṛpasyaite śarīrasthāḥ sarvadevamayo nṛpaḥ ||
These and other deities, who grant boons and curses, reside within the body of the king, who is filled with all deities.

Knowing this, O twice-born, what should be done as I have instructed? Nothing should be given, offered, or sacrificed.

bhartṛśuśrūṣaṇaṃ dharmo yathā strīṇāṃ paro mataḥ mamājñāpālanaṃ dharmo bhavatāṃ ca tathā dvijāḥ ||
The duty of serving the husband is considered supreme for women; likewise, the duty of obeying my command is also your duty, O twice-born.

O great king, let not righteousness be diminished; this is the result of offerings, which encompasses the entire universe.

Even after being informed, that Vena, by the great sages, continues to commit sins without permission, was repeatedly told so.

Then all the sages, filled with anger and irritation, said to each other, 'Let the sin be destroyed, let it be destroyed.'

He who insults the eternal Lord Vishnu, the personification of sacrifice, is not fit to be a ruler of the earth.

Having spoken thus, the sages, with their sacred grass, killed the king who had been previously slain by the Lord for his insults.

Then the sages saw dust everywhere, and they asked the people nearby, 'What is this?'

It was reported by the people that in the lawless state, it had been started by the distressed due to the thefts.

Among those thieves with great speed, the best of sages saw a large dust cloud caused by the plunderers.

Then all the sages consulted together about this earth-holder, and they churned the thigh for the sake of a son, due to the childless man's effort.

From the churning, a man arose from his thigh, who was indeed a very short and dark-complexioned person.

What should I do? Thus spoke all the Brahmins, urged by urgency. They said to him, 'Sit down.' Thus he became a Nishada.

Then those born of that (situation) became Nishadas, residing in the Vindhya mountains, O best of sages, marked by sinful deeds.

tena dvāreṇa tat pāpaṃ niṣkrāntaṃ tasya bhūpateḥ niṣādās te tato jātā venakalmaṣanāśanāḥ ||
Through that door, the sin of that king was expelled. The Nishadas were then born, who destroy the sins of Vena.

The first one named Aja-gava fell from the sky, then the bow and the divine arrows fell from the heavens.

By the good son born, even Vena ascended to heaven, saved from hell by that great-souled one.

Thus, having created the calf, the lord Manu, the self-born, milked the earth with his own hands for the welfare of all crops for the people.
