The powers of all beings are beyond thought and knowledge; from them arise the creative powers of Brahman, just as the heat of the supreme fire manifests warmth.

Understand how the Lord, known as Narayana, initiates creation; He is Brahma, the grandfather of the worlds.

By his own measure, a lifespan of a hundred years is remembered; that is called the greater half, and its half is referred to as the lesser half.

The form of time, O sinless one, is described by Vishnu. Understand this, and know the measure of it.

anyeṣāṃ caiva jantūnāṃ carāṇām acarāś ca ye bhūbhūbhṛtsāgarādīnām aśeṣāṇāṃ ca sattama ||
Among all beings, both mobile and immobile, and those that inhabit the earth, ocean, and others, O best of beings.

kāṣṭhā pañcadaśākhyātā nimeṣā munisattama kāṣṭhātriṃśat kalā triṃśat kalā mauhūrtiko vidhiḥ ||
The wood is known as fifteen branches, the moment, O best of sages. The wood has thirty-three arts, and the thirty arts are the measure of a moment.

तावत्संख्यैर अहोरात्रं मुहूर्तैर मानुषं स्मृतम अहोरात्राणि तावन्ति मासः पक्षद्वयात्मकः ।।
tāvatsaṃkhyair ahorātraṃ muhūrtair mānuṣaṃ smṛtam ahorātrāṇi tāvanti māsaḥ pakṣadvayātmakaḥ ||
By those counts, a day and night are remembered as human time. Days and nights amount to a month, which consists of two fortnights.

तैः षड्भिर अयनं वर्षं द्वे ऽयने दक्षिणोत्तरे अयनं दक्षिणं रात्रिर देवानाम उत्तरं दिनम ।।
taiḥ ṣaḍbhir ayanaṃ varṣaṃ dve 'yane dakṣiṇottare ayanaṃ dakṣiṇaṃ rātrir devānām uttaraṃ dinam ||
With those six, the year is divided into two solstices, the southern and northern. The southern is the night of the gods, and the northern is the day.

दिव्यैर वर्षसहस्रैस तु कृतत्रेतादिसंज्ञितम चतुर्युगं द्वादशभिस तद्विभागं निबोध मे ।।
divyair varṣasahasrais tu kṛtatretādisaṃjñitam caturyugaṃ dvādaśabhis tadvibhāgaṃ nibodha me ||
The divine years are said to be a thousand, which are designated as Krita, Treta, and so on. The four ages, divided into twelve parts, listen to me.

catvāri trīṇi dve caikaṃ kṛtādiṣu yathākramam divyābdānāṃ sahasrāṇi yugeṣv āhuḥ purāvidaḥ ||
Four, three, two, and one, in the order of Krita and others, the ancient sages say there are thousands of divine years in the ages.

tatpramāṇaiḥ śataiḥ saṃdhyā pūrvā tatrābhidhīyate saṃdhyāṃśakaś ca tattulyo yugasyānantaro hi saḥ ||
By those measures, the first part of the twilight is mentioned there, and the portion of twilight is indeed equal to the age that follows.

saṃdhyāsaṃdhyāṃśayor antar yaḥ kālo munisattama yugākhyaḥ sa tu vijñeyaḥ kṛtatretādisaṃjñitaḥ ||
O best of sages, the time that exists between twilight and twilight is known as the age, which is recognized as Krita, Treta, and so on.

kṛtaṃ tretā dvāparaś ca kaliś caiva caturyugam procyate tatsahasraṃ ca brahmaṇo divasaṃ mune ||
Krita, Treta, Dvapara, and Kali are the four ages, and the thousand of Brahma's day is mentioned, O sage.

brahmaṇo divase brahman manavas tu caturdaśa bhavanti parimāṇaṃ ca teṣāṃ kālakṛtaṃ śṛṇu ||
On the day of Brahma, there are fourteen Manus. Listen to the measure of their time.

saptarṣayaḥ surāḥ śakro manus tatsūnavo nṛpāḥ ekakāle hi sṛjyante saṃhriyante ca pūrvavat ||
The seven sages, the gods, Indra, and the kings descended from Manu are created and dissolved at the same time, as before.

caturyugāṇāṃ saṃkhyātā sādhikā hy ekasaptatiḥ manvantaraṃ manoḥ kālaḥ surādīnāṃ ca sattama ||
The number of four ages is seventy-one; the Manvantara is the time of Manu, and the best among the gods.

Eight hundred thousand are remembered by the divine number; fifty-two and other thousands are more.

triṃśatkoṭyas tu saṃpūrṇāḥ saṃkhyātāḥ saṃkhyayā dvija saptaṣaṣṭis tathānyāni niyutāni mahāmune ||
Thirty crores are complete, counted by the twice-born; seventy-six and other numerous are counted by the great sage.

viṃśatiś ca sahasrāṇi kālo 'yam adhikaṃ vinā manvantarasya saṃkhyeyaṃ mānuṣair vatsarair dvija ||
This period is twenty thousand years more than the number of years of the Manvantara as counted by humans.

चतुर्दशगुणो ह्य एष कालो ब्राह्मम अहः स्मृतम ब्राह्मो नैमित्तिको नाम तस्यान्ते प्रतिसंचरः ।।
caturdaśaguṇo hy eṣa kālo brāhmam ahaḥ smṛtam brāhmo naimittiko nāma tasyānte pratisaṃcaraḥ ||
This period is said to be fourteen times a Brahma day, and the end of it is known as the Naimittika period.

tadā hi dahyate sarvaṃ trailokyaṃ bhūrbhuvādikam janaṃ prayānti tāpārtā maharlokanivāsinaḥ ||
At that time, the entire three worlds—earth, atmosphere, and heaven—are burned, and the beings suffering from heat depart.

In the ocean, Brahma, who is the essence of Narayana, lies on a bed of enjoyment, encompassing the three worlds.

जनस्थैर योगिभिर देवश चिन्त्यमानो ऽब्जसंभवः तत्प्रमाणां हि तां रात्रिं तदन्ते सृजते पुनः ।।
janasthair yogibhir devaś cintyamāno 'bjasaṃbhavaḥ tatpramāṇāṃ hi tāṃ rātriṃ tadante sṛjate punaḥ ||
The beings, meditated upon by the yogis, are created again at the end of that night, which is measured by them.

एवं तु ब्रह्मणो वर्षम एवं वर्षशतं च यत शतं हि तस्य वर्षाणां परमायुर महात्मनः ।।
evaṃ tu brahmaṇo varṣam evaṃ varṣaśataṃ ca yat śataṃ hi tasya varṣāṇāṃ paramāyur mahātmanaḥ ||
Thus, the lifespan of Brahma is one hundred years, and indeed, the years of that great soul are counted as a hundred.

एकम अस्य व्यतीतं तु परार्धं ब्रह्मणो ऽनघ तस्यान्ते ऽभून महाकल्पः पाद्म इत्य अभिविश्रुतः ।।
ekam asya vyatītaṃ tu parārdhaṃ brahmaṇo 'nagha tasyānte 'bhūn mahākalpaḥ pādma ity abhiviśrutaḥ ||
One part of this has passed, which is the parārdha of the sinless Brahma; at its end, the great kalpa known as Pādma has occurred.

द्वितीयस्य परार्धस्य वर्तमानस्य वै द्विज वाराह इति कल्पो ऽयं प्रथमः परिकीर्तितः ।।
dvitīyasya parārdhasya vartamānasya vai dvija vārāha iti kalpo 'yaṃ prathamaḥ parikīrtitaḥ ||
The second parārdha, which is the current one, is called the Vārāha kalpa, and this is the first one that is proclaimed.
